This bad ending is interesting because it is all in Makoto’s head and not truly a bad ending. Moreover this bad ending is not even a game over. But the fact that it is in Makoto’s head is interesting like I said. This ending serves to represent and symbolize in a way one of Makoto’s most important flaw:

his lack of audaciousness and his impulsive need of security and harmony whether it be for himself or for his friends.

It’s because of this flaw that the conflict between Kyoko and Makoto happened. It’s because of this flaw that he doesn’t want Alter-Ego to go initially and it’s because of this flaw that he has an important internal conflict in trial 5 about what to do. And choosing the choice of what he usually do, meaning taking the less risk possible lead to this ending. That flaw of his turns into conformism because he not only lets his flaw overtakes him but he also keeps continue to play by the rules of Monokuma and the school, in this ending and so he conforms to the killing game.

Edit: Also one of the reason of why he imagined that ending can also be because of his low esteem of himself too. Despite growing in the killing game, while he gained confidence in himself , he has still a not so high esteem of himself and constantly refers his ability to keep moving forward as his only striking and main quality even in the last chapter. So him imagining this could also be a way to show that lack of faith in himself too.
