You know, I've been thinking about my first playthrough of Verdant Wind, and I now find it pretty funny how I used to not care about Rhea and even got a lil' bit irritated whenever she was brought up in the timeskip. Because that means I kind of missed the point??? (*ノ∀`)
⚠️WARNING!!! This is all my opinion, you don't have to agree with me!! Feel free to ignore! :D⚠️
For starters, I was always annoyed that Byleth insisted on finding Rhea. Because in my mind, the only people that mattered were those in the Alliance war effort. I didn't want to get off track and save someone I didn't care about, I wanted to fight. And this is where I went wrong. Because I'm not Byleth, so I don't think like them. The same can be said about wanting to avoid conflict with Edelgard. I was confused as to why Byleth would want to avoid killing someone we barely knew, and all we knew about was that they started a war. I forgot that Byleth is a character and not a self insert. They hate killing and would rather find a peaceful means to end war, but I digress.
But after I saw that cutscene when Byleth rescued her and every other cutscene of Rhea onwards, I started to have my interest peaked. Something about seeing Rhea's mask crack and allow her humanity to peak through made me sympathize with her. It made me want to get to know her better.
So, with curiosity in mind and a new obsession made, I started my 2nd (technically 3rd) fe3h playthrough. My goal for this playthrough was to unlock supports that missed as well as find details that I overlooked. Things started to click after playing Cindered Shadows and unlocking Rhea's supports.
Rhea and the church are extremely important to the Golden Deer route. I know this is a "well no duh" to all of you, but when you have houses lord tunnel vision, it's pretty hard to see the bigger picture. Now, there are many reasons why Rhea is important to this route, but the main point I want to make here is that Rhea is important to Byleth.
I'm going to get rid of the obvious reason first: Byleth wants to get something out of Rhea. One of the themes of Verdant Wind is identity. Byleth wants to know more about themselves, and Rhea is the only person who holds all of those answers. So yeah, Byleth would want to save Rhea because of that.
But Byleth isn't just interested in saving Rhea because of what they can get out of her. They also care about her. Maybe this is hard to see without unlocking her supports, but I'm sure we all know that Byleth ends up being buddies with everyone in the game regardless of support level. Ex: Byleth may not have all the supports unlocked with Ingrid, but it's made clear that they are on friendly terms outside of the supports. It's the same with Rhea. We've seen Rhea be nothing but friendly to Byleth in and outside of the supports, so I believe Byleth would care about her. I mean, just look at that smile when they save her!

That's just how Byleth is. They care about everyone, and they want to be friends with everyone, even if they are on the opposite side of the war (that Edelgard point from earlier came back!)
And I think that goes with the theme of trust for Verdant Wind. Byleth trusts Rhea and still chooses to trust her in the timeskip when things seem pretty sketchy at best. Byleth chose to trust their friend, Byleth trusted to see the good in them, Byleth trusted that they'll be honest. And Rhea was! It made me feel like the ending was pretty satisfactory.
---
Anyway, I just wanted to express my thoughts. I got into the game blind so I think that helped me play without any preconceived bias of any character (well, as much as I could because I did play two routes at the same time, oops) and that's how I ended up with that first impression. I dunno I think it was fine that Verdant Wind was basically Silver Snow 2.0, it was still enjoyable in this own chaotic way.
I'd like to know if anyone had any similar thoughts while playing Verdant Wind! :3

(Hubert von Vestra voice) Lady Edelgard has requested that you...(subtle hesitation) "lock in". I trust that you are up to such a task.
