PDP primary: Court dismisses Ondo senator’s appeal The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo State on Tuesday dismissed the appeal filed by the senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District , Nicholas Tofowomo, against the victory of a former deputy governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi at the senatorial primary of the Peoples Democratic Party. In the senatorial primary held at Okitipupa town, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state, in May 2022, Ajayi defeated the incumbent Senator Tofowomo scoring 78 votes while Tofowomo polled 74 votes. Being dissatisfied with the results of the primary, Tofowomo approached the Federal High Court, seeking disqualification of the defendant on the grounds of false academic certificates but the court struck out the case in favour of Ajayi. The senator also proceeded to the appellate court to challenge the verdict of the lower court on the case but the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal on Tuesday. In his judgment court, Justice Ayobode Lokulo-Sodipe affirmed the judgment of the high court, dismissing the appeal on the the ground that the appellant failed to file the case at the lower court within the time stipulated by the law. The appellate court held that the appellant’s suit could not be heard on merit because the Electoral Act and constitution stipulated the time within which such suit should be filed. The court also said the failure of the appellant to key into the period stipulated by the law, which was clearly 14 days after the cause of action, made the case and the appeal nugatory. The judge dismissed the appeal and ordered the appellant to pay N250,000 fine. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmTL-BrfrU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

NHRC boss condemns humanitarian worker’s killing in Borno The Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has condemned the murder of a staff member of a humanitarian non-governmental organisation, Alem Muluset, in Damboa, Borno State. He described Muluset’s death as disheartening, noting that aid workers ought to be respected and protected as their efforts and commitment had helped in caring for Populations of Concern in their areas of coverage. This killing, though an isolated one, should be thoroughly investigated and not be allowed to happen again. It is also very important to always review the mental health status of troops in the frontline, considering the traumatic situations that they are sometimes exposed to,” he added. Those delaying state police mischievous – Enugu LP gov candidate Mr Chijioke Edeoga is the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State. In this interview with RAPHAEL EDE, he speaks on national issues bordering on insecurity, state policing, governance, and other topical issues Your entrance into the politics of Enugu State has changed the dynamics. What has really changed? What has really changed is that the people of Enugu State and Nigeria are responding positively, hopeful, and energetically to the changes that the current electoral law has brought to the process of electioneering and the process of announcing the results in such a way that the outcomes have been substantially in accordance with the people’s wishes. The people have long agonised, worried or refused to participate because they said or knew that the outcomes usually were not in tandem with their expressed preferences; you vote one thing and the difference will be announced. It has been done so brazenly over the years. So, there has been substantial alienation, indifference, withdrawal, or contempt for the electoral process, but thanks to the current dispensation at the national level as it regards electoral law, which has been operationalised in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states, people have woken up to the reality of the situation or to the fact that a change has come. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClFcEqaoAwe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The President of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Michael Nnachi, said over 57,000 nurses have migrated from Nigeria for greener pastures abroad within a period of five years spanning from 2017 to 2022. Nnachi, who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent, attributed the migration of nurses to poor working conditions, poor remuneration, amidst overwhelming workload. He said efforts by the federal government to address brain drain in the health sector are moving at a snail’s pace. “The critical reduction in the workforce of health workers is alarming, and I’m afraid that if nothing is done, the challenges will be enormous in the health sector. I’m aware that even as the government is trying to address the issue, because they are also touched, efforts being made are at a snail’s pace. The nurses are leaving in droves. It is very critical because the doctors and nurses are critical to any health facility. “Looking at the rate they are leaving, the available workforce is dropping, and it is creating a huge workload on the remaining workforce, particularly the nurses, and those who are available are stressed. “If you’re looking at the numbers, over 57,000 nurses have left over this period, and they are moving out on a weekly basis. The figure is from 2017 to date because in 2017, the situation continued and was not noticed, not until a point when some people started complaining about the condition of the service. “As we speak, some people are preparing in one form or another to leave, either for Canada, the UK, Australia, the Philippines, or Saudi Arabia.” The NANNM President said for the teeming population of over 200 million Nigerians, there is only one nurse for every 1,660 patients. “According to the WHO, we have what we call a critical situation or critical state, so there is meant to be one nurse for every four patients. In some situations, you may have one nurse to five patients. Under normal conditions, one may have one nurse for eight or 10 patients. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck7_cKKtdL-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Court Sacks Taraba Senator For Defecting From PDP Party To Ruling APC A Taraba State lawmaker, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, who was representing Taraba South Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost his position in the legislative chamber for dumping his party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Bwacha lost his position on Thursday after the Federal High Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State sacked him over the defection following a suit marked FHC/JAL/CS/9/2022 brought before the court by the PDP. The Taraba State chapter of the PDP had dragged Bwacha to the court over his defection and prayed the court to declare his seat vacant for dumping the party on which he was elected. Delivering the judgment on Thursday, Justice Simon Amobeda, ordered Bwacha to immediately vacate his seat as a Senator; saying that the first defendant (Bwacha) by defecting from the plaintiff (PDP) to the second defendant (APC) during the life of the senate to which he was elected in the 2019 general election, lost his seat of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Justice Amobeda who cited section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ruled that PDP successfully established its case and is therefore entitled to the grant of the reliefs sought. The 4th defendant (The Senate President) shall immediately declare as vacant the seat of the 1st defendant in the Senate of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The 3rd Defendant (Independent National Electoral Commission) shall immediately conduct a bye-election among the candidates that contested the 2019 general elections for Taraba South Senatorial District of Taraba State. “Leave is hereby given to the plaintiff to present another candidate to fill the vacancy created by the 1st defendant’s defection to the 2nd defendant not later than 90 days from the date of this judgment,” parts of the judgment said. The court further restrained Senator Bwacha or his agents from accessing allowances due to the occupant of the seat until a winner emerged from the election to be conducted. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck1oNBnN4H_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
