i think this is one of my favourite scenes in all of death note. it says so much about misa — her adoration of romantic self-sacrifice, her meaningless cruelty and the way she flagrantly displays it because she knows no one will care even if they see it for what it is. rem is an ally to her but misa wants to kill her anyway because it would be a beautiful thing to do; rem knows this but chooses to love her anyway because shinigami are fickle and fond of shallow things. misa and light are the same in that if you peel back their aesthetic surfaces there's just nothing there. they are two people who have decided that life is disposable, and neither of them realize or care that this has done something profoundly destructive to themselves. it's more of that recurring theme: murder is just murder and death is just death. you can't dress killing up with romance and expect it become something kind. i love her so much because she's a person you meet after the death note and everything it represents has already got its claws into her. there's something both compelling and tragic about never knowing what she was like before.
