♡ Xavier could always sleep. Anywhere, at any given time and he made it look so easy too - so why couldn't you?

♡ You tossed and turned in your own bed, no position quite comfortable enough, the ambience either too quiet or too loud. Everything just felt off, no matter what you did.

♡ Your phone was turned off to rid yourself of the urge to doom scroll and the little clock on your bedside table was long unplugged, the silent ticking drove you into insanity.

♡ When you went to bed, you were relaxed, knowing you'd get 8-9 hours of sleep and will be well rested for your exhausting day tomorrow but by now, you'd be lucky if you even got 4 hours of somewhat restful slumber.

♡ This pattern kept repeating almost nightly. Your nerves were wearing thin and you were crawling on your last energy reserves - even Xavier noticed that something was wrong.

♡ Granted, he did notice it after your first sleepless night, you just looked so tired, but he didn't want to bring it up, not wanting to put pressure on you or make you think that you're anything less than beautiful in his eyes. Some bags under your eyes would never change that.

♡ But he also refuses to let you go on like that. The fact that you cant sleep is robbing him of sleep too, so one evening he simply walks downstairs to your apartment and knocks on the door. He has a key, he knows you gave him permission to just enter when you got together - but he still never did so.

♡ You opened the door and rubbed your eyes, looking oh so tired but the sun barely set. The confusion is practically written all over your face.

♡ “We're having a sleepover.” He states and pushes past you, kissing your temple gently as he passes. Gently, he takes your hand and leads you to the bedroom.

♡ “Xav, what are you-” you ask but he interrupts you as he climbs into your bed.

♡ “You barely slept these past few weeks. And I'll make sure that changes” he opened his arms and you climbed into them without hesitation. You wanted to cry, to break down in his arms but you were too exhausted to even do that.

♡ His fingers ran through your hair and his steady heartbeat did calm you down enough to put you in a state of trance, shy of falling asleep but the slumber never came.

♡ Xavier was beyond tired himself so he carefully moved positions to lay on top of you, body resting between your legs and his head came to rest on your chest. He felt like a weighted blanket and this did the trick.

♡ Slowly but surely, sleep overtook your senses with your boyfriend soundly sleeping on top of you.

♡ Maybe this was a sign that you two finally needed to move in together or at least spend the nights together. His presence felt like home to you, comforting and warm.

♡ If you still find yourself sleepless with him, he would always be ready to tell you stories, read to you or move to the couch to watch movies - you shouldn't linger in bed if you can't sleep after all.

♡ You were no longer alone with your thoughts and it's as if his mere presence silences your mind and rids your heart of worry.

Xavier... is kind of mean?

You realize this a bit late, embarrassingly, but he does it in such a way you don't seem to notice until you replay the conversation back in your mind.

Sometimes it's just normal enough to pass off— something you wouldn't really think back to... But when you do, it's like a condescending pat on your cheek, and you can almost hear his voice in your head.

"I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just explaining why I'm right." He'd say, gently cupping your cheek and wiping at the dirt with his thumb, "I just don't want you to get hurt rushing into things like a child..."

Undermining you, softly. With care.

"Are you sure you'll be able to go alone?"

"Yes," you scoff, "It's not like I need you to babysit me on every mission.. I can handle this just fine."

Xavier pretends to think for a bit, pursing his lips, and you prepare yourself once again to decline his offer as your mission partner — but to your surprise he just relents.

"Mm..okay."

The way he says it makes you suspicious, like he's planning something, but when he sees your narrowed vision glue onto him, he just sends you an innocent smile. He almost looks too giddy, but you end up shrugging off your paranoia to focus on your assigned mission.

So you get to the designated area, only for the wanderers to be a bit too strong, a bit too advanced. If there weren't so many of them, you'd be able to clear the area quickly, but it's taking awhile, and you're starting to get tired— so you bite your tongue and dial for backup. You can only hope it's anyone else but him, maybe Tara? Even Andrew—

When Xavier does eventually arrive, using his evol and dispersing of the few remaining wanderes on site, he doesn't say anything to you— not even an, 'I told you so'— because he doesn't need to. His expression already speaks volumes.

You can already tell by the upturn of his lips, the soft crinkle of his eyes as he looks at you... But he says nothing, and all that comes out of his mouth is a soft,

"Those were tough, huh?" yes. But clearly not for him.

You rustle, feeling the need to defend your pride, "I got rid of most of them!.. Jus' got tired is all."

Xavier looks at you, and he just let's out a soft hum at your words, clearly unimpressed, but overjoyed at the fact that it's only a matter of time before he becomes your official partner.

If it's not a subtle attack on your abilities at combat (you're better than he is, you think, where you strike he dodges), then it's a jab at your intelligence.

"You're so clever. I'm surprised you didn't figure that out sooner." Xavier says, a soft smile gracing his features, full of affection— the sight of it renders your entire brain useless, and the only thing you can really remember from what he said is, 'you're so clever'.

It's frustrating, because it's not like he's really trying to mince his words — it's your brain doing it for you. Remembering his 'praises' instead of what they really were.

You're sure he knows this too, because everytime you see him— he seems a bit more collected: smug in a way only certain people are able to tell. In a way only you're able to see.

It gets on your nerves, prickles at your skin like any annoying itch— especially when he wears a look of innocence on his face, his eyes scanning your form and looking at the slight frown on your face, the furrow of your brows. He tilts his head to the side and asks, full of amusement,

"Wake up on the wrong side of bed?"

I also think some tiny (big) part of Xavier just likes seeing you a bit irritated at him.

some confusing things from the update that i want to clarify (as a longtime player of otomes):

there is no 'endgame' love interest. they're all just as important. do you seriously think infold would risk upsetting 4/5 of the fans by making 1 the 'true' one.

one fault infold does have is that they put all the 'romantic' storylines together in the main story, but what's supposed to actually happen is that you, in your mind, separate the more intimate moments from the actual lore. for example, mc going with sylus to the arena is canon for all timelines, but her lying down in sylus' lap to get her wound treated (for example) only happens if you pursue sylus as a romantic interest, only in his timeline. i know this might seem confusing, and there's no one to blame but the devs, but that's what they want you to do. i assure you they're not trying to write mc as a man-eater either, pls don't blame my girl 😭

yes all the LIs exist at the same time. i thought we had already established this, guys

there's no correct answer (at least, yet) for 'who met mc first' and it's really annoying anyways for you to try and claim so
