the human mind is prone to catastrophizing when left unoccupied. And that’s why it’s important to always have a little Blorbo to rotate in your head. It acts as a protective charm of sorts to redirect your imagination away from harmful spirals
thoughts without Blorbo: oh my god I was so cringe in seventh grade why did I do that
thoughts with Blorbo: I haven’t considered the interactions with bleebus; I must rectify this immediately

i’m fascinated by the code of secrecy implied by the fact that both athenril and meeran know that you or bethany are a mage and nobody throws you to the wolves even if you betray them and they literally later in game try to jump you and kill you. when your contract runs out, they both seem to have tried to hold onto you, but neither of them did something like threaten to inform the templars once you were no longer of use to them. (or if they did, it was an empty threat and the hawkes knew that enough to risk it.) and these are not exactly morally scrupulous people. varric also implies he knows about you/bethany when you meet him and the hawkes aren’t surprised so this information is like, out, if you move in certain circles. but nobody has turned you in. even though for example if you’re on the athenril route you’ve been a thorn in the side of the biggest criminal factions out there. i like the idea that turning someone in to the templars basically makes all apostates blacklist you and nobody can afford to do it

the thing about it is spirit healers are like Complicated to deal with. because dealing with spirits is the #1 thing that the circle does not want its mages doing — the chantry believes its mages to be inherently corruptible, inherently susceptible, inherently unreliable when it comes to dealing with spirits and not being tricked or seduced or overpowered by demons. but spirit healers can do things that Vastly outstrip the advances of nonmagical medicine, and they're just too lucrative to ban. besides, imagine the outrage if the chantry told the nation they just had to Die, en masse, of injuries and diseases they knew to be treatable because, whoops, spirit healers are Bad Now! so theyre absolutely necessary (for profit, for appearances, for the benefits that being able to provide access to spirit healers brings the chantry — including spiritual ones, surely!) but also, under suspicion at all times, because... you never know what kind of spirit they're talking to. you never know Which will be the time that a spirit healer doesn't stop at talking. right.
which like... i think shows just how arbitrary and vague the definition of 'blood magic' must be, in universe. because, you've got a spirit mage and you don't trust them, and they're dealing with spirits every day... who's to say it's Not blood magic. and who's to say that even the things they are so confident theyre allowed to be doing wont suddenly become blood magic when it's convenient!
& like. living under that kind of surveillance. knowing that's where you stand with the people who hold your life in their hands. spirit healers!

Cole: Breath comes quick. Heart high. Hands ready. You always look at the sky first.
Davrin: Making sure the weather’s good for flying.
Cole: No. You’re looking for him. Sweep of wings, shadow over grass, the promise that he’s there.
Davrin: Guess I like knowing he’s close.
Cole: You’re his ground. His grip. The place he lands when the sky is too far.
