Oh, his paranoia hated that. But his paranoia kind of hated everything, so was that even a surprise? "Congrats, maybe? If you wanna have a chat about your one night stand, though, I'd suggest trying Julian. Feels like they could handle that. Maybe Fulton?" Definitely not him.

"I was safe, promise. I...sort of met someone and ended up crashing there for the night," she admitted, knowing that would raise far more questions.

"Molly," she corrected. "You haven't earned the right to use a nickname." That was for her siblings, mostly, and even then it didn't apply to all of them. She'd let it slide before because she felt like he'd be more insufferable about it if she brought it up, but letting it slide hadn't stopped him either.

"I'm not here to bug you about whatever you seem to think I'm here to bug you about. Granddad sent me. Mom borrowed one of his books and someone borrowed it from her. Wasn't me. Thought it might have been you. Borrow anything from her recently?" She'd considered dropping by his home for this, but she knew he valued his privacy and space, and she got that, probably more than a lot of their siblings. Gods knew she didn't want anyone at her place. This had seemed... better.

"Remind me to ward my shop against the whole damn lot of you. I'm assuming Fulton gave you this address? And, please, don't touch the books. They're old."

"Maybe. But I don't think Ren cared that they didn't trust him. Hell, he might have even liked that your dad was afraid of him." He wouldn't put that kind of thing past Ren. "I don't like that you're ready to flinch away from me at any given moment."

"I don't know. But what I do know is my mom and dad didn't trust Ren for the longest time and they all somehow made it work. Enough so that I have siblings. I know Starla's willing to work on things and I know I trust her. I know it physically fucking hurts when you're not around and I can't fucking sleep anyway because I roll over to find you and you're not fucking there and it hurts all fucking over again."

that's different, in ways mat doesn't entirely know how to voice. he can talk to his siblings about sandy. and most of his friends -- even if he spares dee from a lot of the details. but talking to sandy about it all? "you... were there. do you need us to rehash it?"

the answer actually does surprise sandy. because for as long as he’s known mat, he’s known that the other doesn’t do bad well, if he even tries to do it at all. “so you talked to them about all of it, but you won’t talk to me about it?”

"And if you can't trust me, where do you think that leaves us? Do you think we can share a bed while you're wondering if I'm going to kill you in your sleep? Share a meal when you're half convinced I'm going to poison it? Build a life while you wonder not if but when I'm going to betray you and Starla? When I'm going to hurt you? Missing me doesn't make a difference if you're never going to be able to relax around me or feel safe around me."

"Both your parents? I'm kind of impressed. They're not really known for a united front, are they? So did you come here to give me an update or did you come here to have an excuse to avoid dear old mom and dad?"

"That's because you have way too many goddamn siblings. The kind of stray that thought he was human but he's actually one of my grandfather's bastards and not in a consensual way. He has no fucking clue and it really needs to stay that way but fuck me sideways, the price of that is my parents showed up at my fucking doorstep."

She was so not the sibling for this. She should've sent Harper in. Or maybe someone should've called one of the friendlier ones. But she was the one who was here, so she was just gonna have to hope for the best. "I don't think you're suicidal." Not currently, anyway. She couldn't say shit about his past and she wouldn't begin to try. "But I also know magic goes sideways as fuck sometimes and shit happens." She knew enough to know that it had happened with her dad. And on the other end of the spectrum, she'd seen Cooper struggle with blood lust his entire life. "I'm trying to ask if you're sure you're okay, but I'm doing a shit job at it apparently."

"I'm not gonna kill myself, okay? Not entirely sure that's an option anymore anyway, even if I wanted to."

That was the honest truth. With what seemed like a fairly stable roof over his head for at least a little while, and not really knowing all the in and outs of his apparent not being as human as he previously believed, suicide was pretty far down on Ben's list of current priorities at least.

aislin rolls her eyes. mat is ridiculous in all of the best ways. “i feel like i haven’t seen anything, like, full on terrifying. at least not since i was little. but it’s hard to say if they were actually terrifying or i was just a kid. but plenty of scary. lots of scary.”

"i bet if you ask aunt max, she knows someone who actually could replace it. i swear, she's still got like... pirate treasure stashed away somewhere, and she knows probably as many immortals as mom does. definitely more than dad." which doesn't actually solve the problem. "but fine. i'll give it back but i'm keeping it for another week. i have an event i'm gonna wear it to." if this was any other jacket, he thinks hugo might forget he has it, but he knows this one will need to be returned. ...and he knows he can probably 'borrow' it again in the future. "well, it wasn't me for once, so i'm out of options."

“i was just giving you a chance to say it wasn’t the jacket that i’ve been looking for this whole time. which it is. and i shouldn’t be surprised, but i am. i was thinking i lost it at a bar or something. you better return it. it’s vintage, i can’t just replace it.” normally he’s fine with landry ‘borrowing’ whatever he wants out his closet, but not that jacket. “it could have been mom, she’s almost as bad as you, but i don’t think it was this time.”
