A Version of a Thinkpiece
I usually keep quiet about things on here until I have my own thoughts straight. My heart hurt a lot last week as a lot of national comics discussed a festival in my comedy hometown. I saw some things I shouldn't have and was even more sad to see how peers of mine discuss equality, feminism and make jokes at the expense of the trans community. I was very sad to be part of an after thought of women asked to jump on the festival after it became part of national shaming within the comedy community. When I started comedy in 2009, there was an improv troupe that performed weekly and one open mic run by John Wessling, Comedy Sportz and The Improv. Between 2010 and 2011, three more open mics started and between 2012 and 2013 about four more started along with some showcases and the first comedy festival: Trill Comedy Festival. We were trying and having fun. Since then, Houston has gained two more comedy festivals with big backers to get some very big national acts. The best way to handle things like this backlash, in my opinion is admit failure to adhere to current standards and learn going forward. I saw some of this, but mostly I saw a scramble to put women in one to two days before the festival. Since then, I have seen social media posts of a very fun festival. Great friends and smiling faces. This is also in my opinion a best practice. Admit you were wrong, learn and move on. That's all any of us have to do. The Houston scene is mostly very young. They are learning. They sometimes try to come off harder to seem bigger - sometimes that works and is good and sometimes people walk away thinking they're assholes. Here's where I'll flip some scales... Instead of tearing people down for not knowing better, educate them. You'll feel better. Houston's scene is growing (when I left there were two women going up regularly) and with growth comes pain. This is true with many scenes. Let's educate instead of calling out. It's so easy for us to call out an issue. It's harder to reach out and offer solutions or assistance. Houston, here's some assistance: saying you want more women in your scene does not make you part of a solution. Give time to the women who are working and trying - don't give up when they're not great after a month and have slept with someone in the scene. Pay attention to each other on stage. Talk to Andy Huggins. Don't think you are the best - you can always work harder. Get out of Houston for a weekend - do sets anywhere else. Repeat. Grow. Focus on your own growth - not competing with others or shit talking others. Don't blame the audience, get better. Accept your individual short comings as comics and bookers, find someone who excels in those areas and work with them. People trying to be on the right side of everything: please always speak your mind, but please also offer solutions. If someone doesn't see a problem with 3/50 comics being women, you won't change that opinion. If they agree it's a problem, you have a change to help. Either way, you can offer something more than just crying out someone else's perceived fault. If we all stop thinking people are up to no good, I think all of our communication will be better. I have been very angry about this whole thing for days and I hate being angry. I'm not good at it and I'm honest and open with everyone. I've been angry because everyone is being reactionary. Reactionary behavior is rash and founded in quick back pedaling, rushed solutions, accusations and cover up jobs.
