I carried today's tomato harvest from the garden to the house in the skirt of my dress and thought, "Ah, Yes. As it should be." (at Minneapolis, Minnesota)

Best thing that happened today: After I interrogated him about how not to kill a fiddle leaf fig (info for a friend, obvs 🙄) and discussing the finer points of plant care, the barista at @pennyscoffee_ gave me a clipping of the shop's cactus. Second best thing that happened today: I took in a sunny rain shower from my porch this evening. (at Minneapolis, Minnesota)

In addition to the existence of angels the value of hard work, my mom believes that gardening holds analogies and deep lessons for every aspect of life. I think I believe in at least two of these three things. This morning I woke up feeling very small and angry and overwhelmed in the face of the injustices of this world. As I watered my vegetable garden I crafted passioned speeches in my mind, moving the stream of water from plant to plant and toppling straw men. The sight of this little cucumber - the first of the season - pulled me out of my ragey daze and brought me to tears. It was new and unexpected and decidedly joyful. The plant on which it grew is expanding and changing every day - beautiful movement and growth in a small plot of this chaotic and unfair earth. For me it was a little future-pickle of hope.
