THE REYNOLDS PAMPHLET
Have you read this?
“The charge against me is a connection with one James Reynolds. For the purposes of Improper Speculation, my real crime is an amorous connection with his wife for a considerable time with his knowing consent. I had frequent meetings with her, most of them at my own house.”
Peggy looked down at the paper in front of her. How could he do this? How could he not only cheat on her sister but also publish it in the local news? Was this a joke? Was it a publicity stunt? Peggy would never know. However, what she did know what this was not Alexander. This was not her Alexander.
The Alexander that she knew was kind and hard-working. He loved Eliza. Peggy knew that. She also knew that he loved her other sister, Angelica, as well, even if the two would never admit it. But this? Peggy could not understand. She could not wrap her mind around what she was reading. The youngest blonde confided in Alexander since the moment they had met. He became her best friend. He was the one person that she trusted all of her secrets with and she thought that he had done the same. How could she trust him now?
Hearing her phone ring, she looked down to see the man’s name on her caller ID. She couldn’t speak to him. Not now and possibly, not ever. He had destroyed everything. He had destroyed her trust. He had destroyed their relationship. Most of all, he had destroyed her sister, the kindest person that she would ever know. Even though Peggy and Eliza couldn’t be anymore different, she was still her sister and she never wanted anything like this to happen to her.
As her phone rang again, she picked it up quickly. “Alexander, stop calling me. I never want to speak to you again,” she spat into the phone before hanging up on the man. Whatever he had to say, she didn’t want to hear it. The question kept ringing in her head over and over again like bell.
How could he do this?
