After reading-Medium is Message
First, he redefined the meaning of medium. We usually think the medium is just a base of the content. But he said the extension of the human are medium. “the Internet could change the world”, “WeChat has already changed the China”, what we say like these are based on the change after producing the new medium. Both Internet and WeChat are new medium and messages, the effect they brought are not diffusing immediately, time can explain.
Medium and message are too close to separate with each other, they cannot exist independently or will have no meaning. For example, when we read the news from our iPhone, what we can get is not only the message from the news, but also feel the progress of technology. The time when we read, the size of the words, the color words, the typography and etc, all of these will affect our reaction to this news. So the traditional “content” of the news is not the only center role, which could not efficiently spread without the medium.
Actually, medium not only will affect our feeling to the “message” but also define our model of message feeling and decide our reaction. Medium can tell message just by themselves, even outside the message of content. So we should think more about the message we get, we may need to combine the way of medium to think about the content.

Wang Wei wrote this poem, to express their peace of mind, which is difficult for modern city people state. I want to make a sound effect piece to say how people would be disturbed easily and how hard it is to get into peace.
The sound is describing a woman who is doing yoga.

Wang Wei wrote this poem to say what he felt when facing to the scene where he lives. The poem is a bridge to let readers get into that landscape.
So I want to show the scene I see every day since I just move to this place for one month, and I decided to use After Effect to finish since it’s totally new for me. Just want to challenge myself.

I think of when learning ancient poetry, there will always be a map of landscape painting next to the poem. So I want to make a digital Ink painting with all the translating versions in this book.

1st Project

I accidentally discovered this book in the library, the whole book is talking about an ancient Chinese poem from Wang Wei, and ancient poetry is a very common style in ancient Chinese literature. For some translations of this poem in English, I think those are interesting and even give some new interpretation. Since I remember we just need to recite the poem when learning in high school and I have never read the ancient Chinese poetry in other languages, I decided to do 5in5 around this book!
There is a game called “guess the word” that I played when I was a child. People stand in a line, the first people describe the word he saw to the next person without saying that word and the others do the same thing one by one. The last one would guess the word and it may be the same word as the first people saw or a totally another answer.
So the first project I want to do is sort of like that game and experimental. I would let the first people draw a picture according to an English version of this poem and the let the 2nd one describe it in his mother language, the 3rd one to draw a picture according to the previous version. This information would pass by 6 people, the last version would be a new poem in an English version, and we can see what would happen to compare to the original version.
The first version of this poem:
Empty mountains:
no one to be seen.
Yet - hear -
human sounds and echoes.
Returning sunlight
enters the dark wood;
Again shining
on the green moss, above.

And the end, I invited Jackie to describe this picture in a poem as she want:
In a place
Where trees grow taller than
moutains,
two planes collide in a storm.
The passengers parachute to
escape death,
Only to begin a new life in a
foreign place.
