Prologue (so far)

In the high mountains of the Oxirial Realm, there lived a creature that nobody dared to look at. The citizens of the land knew that this creature was good, but powerful: one that controlled all of the elements of the Realm. But he was not praised, for the people were afraid that he could turn his back on them at the slightest wrongdoing.

Much to their surprise, the creature continued to keep the land safe for many years. But a great offense was laid upon him during the spring of the year of Tranquility. He sensed a disturbance in the elemental patterns and knew this was not just an ordinary sin.

“Fetch Luan,” the creature spat.

His guard, who was standing across the room, shuddered at his booming voice. “Y-yes my lord. I will t-try as s-soon as possible. ”

The creature spun around towards the guard, his dark robes flinging behind him. His shoes clicked on the wooden floor as he stepped closer, then faced him. The guard shadowed his face from the creature with his hands.

“No,” said the creature. “You will do as I say, now.”

“B-but my lord, you have assigned m-me other t-tasks…” he cowered.

“Now!” The tower shook as if an earthquake was taking place. The guard fled while trying to shield his face from the monster. The creature smiled, baring pointed teeth.

Hours later, the guard returned with a woman on the back of his horse. Her hands were bound with coarse rope and her mouth was taped shut. Her eyes screamed in place of her mouth.

As she heard the creature approaching her, she shut her eyes tightly. She flinched as the tape was ripped off her mouth.

“Look at me Luan,” he coaxed her.

“I must not!” she cried. She turned away and tried to break her hands free from the rope so that she could mask her face.

“You will be banned from the Realm,” he yelled.

Slowly she opened her glassy eyes. “Oh my god. You… you… you've changed.”

The hideous creature scoffed.

“Why do you want me?” Luan demanded, her eyes begging to leave.

“Your daughter.”

“What about her?”

“Her secret has been revealed,” he hissed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She nervously picked at the rope around her wrist with her teeth.

“A human knows. A human!” The creature seized Luan’s neck and stared into her icy eyes. “Do you know what this means?!”

She broke from his gaze and nodded slowly. He removed his hands at this gesture. “But how could Kastien…”

“You fool,” he laughed. “Not Kastien. The other one. The halfling.”

“No…” she gasped. “Not Jasmine. I refuse to believe it.” A single tear spilled from her eye.

“I thought you trusted her.”

“I did, I did,” she sobbed.

“And I thought I trusted you.”

“You still can! It was her mistake, not mine.” She gazed up at the creature with pleading eyes.

“You are her mother!”

Luan shrieked.
