It's POW/MIA day & just a reminder that there are, afaik, no American POWs anywhere, missing soldiers are largely presumed dead, and this flag - while often flown as a neutral sign of support for veterans - was created and advocated for by a conspiracy group who claimed through the 80s and 90s that there were still POWs in Vietnam & that we should go back there to get them (which they tried to do multiple times to no results)
This flag is one of the most Weird American Things I can think of
Tumblr media
It's the POW/MIA flag. It's flown over the White House, alongside the American flag, since the 80s (off and on). As of 2019 it's mandatory to fly it over federal government buildings; it flies over state government buildings in many places as well. It seems like a neutral sign of military support, so it's easy to pass over it without asking "wait, are there any American POWs"
Then if you look it up it's the symbol of a Vietnam-era conspiracy theory debunked in 1993. This is the flag for the 70s/80s version of Pizzagate, and it flies over the US Capitol building and White House every single day

Seeing this again & I still think it's really silly. The hunts for most marquee lost films or TV shows are v. well established, or well established to be futile, so no, there isn't a lot to be gained from throwing more people at it
But also there's just this idea that it's silly to look for works that aren't "important" and. Who determines that. What does that mean. It's important to the person seeking it. "All they look for is obscure kid's shows from the 2000s" All they look for are works of art made by hundreds of human beings, and watched by thousands of human beings - but you're not personally interested in it so I guess it's not worth preserving.
Establishing hierarchies of what art is "worth" keeping around is one reason why so much of it goes missing. Because the present is always terrible at knowing what about the present is important. If you asked people in 1982 if we should junk The Thing, a lot of them would say yes. Silent films were old-fashioned and not worth saving, until the films that replaced them slipped into history too. But setting aside rediscovered classics, and dealing with legit unremarkable art...unremarkable art has a right to exist and be preserved?
I know there's many reasons legal, technical, and commercial it's not done, but it's my genuine belief that everything should just be available. If a studio has a streaming service, it should have all of their films and shows. Not a curated selection of the Good Ones, but everything, since curation will happen naturally. I'd be happier knowing some one-season flop kid's show can be watched by someone who's interested, even if that someone isn't me, and even if I never hear about it existing.
I like when people get cranky that lost media people focus on more recent stuff and not Important Classic lost media. Setting aside that groups looking for lost films etc are much older than a dang wiki, consider the practicalities here vis-a-vis a community that likes finding things. Like, it's theoretically possible to find a show from 1996 on a old VHS tape, but you're not going to find an obscure Youtube upload of London After Midnight

How did one day give us "the GOP candidate for NC governor posted extensive political comments in a porn site's forum, calling himself 'the Black Nazi' who wanted to bring slavery back" & "the New York Magazine writer who did a big article boosting RFK Jr last year was having an affair with him". Which came out at the same time as a story about RFK Jr cutting open a dead whale with a chainsaw and taking its skull. Gear dog what's next

Watching this review of a restaurant in rural Minnesota that was a combination restaurant and haunted house. It had Frankenstein, Dracula, and other monsters just wandering around. All of the monsters had their own lairs you could eat in, too
youtube
This is from 1977, the year Dino's Other World opened; it burnt down in 1981, according to the uploader, and the ground is now a waste treatment tank

Joe Biden dropped out on a Sunday. There are people out there who got a text on their weekend saying "you need to start work on Robo Harris"
The Hall of Presidents animatronic for Trump was rumored to be a robot Hillary retrofitted into a robot Trump, so what is it like for them this year banking on not having to build a new one either way, only to now have to start planning animatronic Kamala Harris. Do you think they already have plans for robots of every Vice President? Just in case? There are people out there who watch election results to see how it impacts their job of making a robotic doppelganger of the winner for a show everyone thinks is boring

There are people who eagerly play games made for 80s computers that could render 16 colors & people who are out there making their dream game, which looks exactly like a FPS from 1998 & then there's people who demand they "remaster" a game that came out five years ago to make it playable & rant about how a near-photorealistic game that cost hundreds of millions to make is a hideous flop bc it doesn't have perfect water physics

I'm going to be honest: I've never had a bad movie theater experience. I know my experiences aren't universal but I'm always kind of baffled when people start talking about how awful it is. Most of that time was spent seeing wide release movies in multiplexes and I've never really had anything worse than a guy walking out to take a phone call or a crying baby
It's just annoying that this is one of those things where you're not really allowed to say you like doing something without people talking about how much they hate it. Not just talking about it, but hijacking and dominating the conversation to make it entirely about How Much It Sucks. You truly can't discuss going to a movie theater at all without getting instantly drowned out by a sea of OH I HATE ALL THE PEOPLE ON THEIR PHONES AND THE CRYING BABIES, I'LL NEVER GO BACK IT'S SO AWFUL, YEP YEP WHY DO WE STILL NEED 'EM WHEN I'VE GOT SUCH A GOOD HOME THEATER IN MY BASEMENT and like. Cool. Good for you. I'm glad your experiences are universal
(Maybe part of it is that one of the big complaints is about kids and babies, and honestly, I'm not even the slightest bit sympathetic to people who consider having to hear A Child Existing In Public a grand imposition. Maybe if it's something age inappropriate but like. Get over it?)

December 8th, Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day?
I think there was also a day for asking time travelers to appear. But I'm not sure if that was a regular holiday or just a convention thing ("we're doing a time travel conference, time travelers welcome")
When I was younger everyone cared about Talk Like a Pirate Day. Every September 19th it'd be yars and shivers me timber all the way down, and people took delight in it. Now nobody ever talks like a pirate, on that day or any other. So few of us cling to the old ways. This is where our society went wrong. People not talking about pirates once a year, everything else about society is fine, probably
