Trolling, Online Harassment, and Personal Experiences

Online harassment has become all too common. Trolling is the act of harassing another individual through online platforms. The goal is to offend you, or provoke you.  Women are often the victims of trolling taken to the extreme. Women who experience extreme harassment online are usually women who speak out against something, or have a media spotlight, but any woman can fall victim to online harassment. Women who are trolled are threatened, sexually harassed, and sometimes receive death threats. I have been trolled before, but not to such extreme levels. Males are the only ones who have harassed me online. Ignoring the harassment did help it subside, but it still made me angry. I was called names, and made to feel unintelligent, simply for stating my opinions - of which they did not agree with. I believe that if I had responded to the messages, the harassment would have continued, and it would escalate quickly. Many people will tell you to ignore the troll, but shouldn’t harassment be addressed? Wether off or online, harassment against women is undeniable and should be legally punishable.

We are surrounded by a world that reflects us online, except that our once private speech utterances now increasingly take place in micropublics, where we are forced to patrol the boundaries of our filter bubbles, defriending and muting and blocking those who intrude upon or take exception to our worldviews.
