“oops—careful!” too late. the bowl of nuts spilled across the bar counter. dae sighed, quickly brushing them into his hand to pour them back into the bowl. “here you go,” he handed them back to the other man, “sorry about that. it’s kind of chaotic.”

lukas asked for a bowl of snacks for him then it accidentally hits the man before him, the contents accidentally spilling over the bar before them, some falling to the ground. as the other passes it over to him, lukas chooses to return it to the bar instead. “not that i’m very conscious--but we’re not so sure if the counter is clean.

“Hey, hey hey—” Brooks raised his hand up to stop the other from coming any further before shifting his fingers into a point, his other hand lifting to display a cherry he’d stolen from the bartender’s selection of fruits. He stepped back and aimed, as if he was back in high school on the courts, or one of the young bucks on the television right now, set for a free throw. “Three pointer!” he called, the cherry arched, headed in Lukas’s direction.

“is that a shot for me, brooks?” lukas crosses his arms, watching as brooks shoots his shot with the cherry, the fruit ending up in one of the empty glasses on the bar. “and that’s the way you do it.” it has been a while since they’ve done something that they would enjoy, that for week him and selin were mostly reserved, kept to themselves as they’ve mourned for vivi. “how about i get you your next drinks?”

Analu nodded, straying away from continuing the conversation about their respective families. She knew more than a thing or two how complicated they can get, when it was the one thing that should come easy in life. “Weird?” she didn’t know how else to put it, she thought returning home meant she’d stick to a normal day-to-day routine, but there was nothing normal about constantly fearing who could be next. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around it I guess. Though actually, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to.”

“weird, yeah. that’s the simplest way to describe everything that’s been going on.” lukas lets out a deep sigh, only hearing the news play on repeat about the fires and the deaths for the past month or so. everyone’s getting a bit more scared about their lives by the second and for lukas, it wasn’t just his that he was fearing for, but also selin. “i don’t think nobody’s going to be able to process all the shit’s going on.” he shrugs, before taking a swig of his drink. “all we can do right now is learn how to protect ourselves, because that seems like a job the police can’t fucking do.”

“Always,” Selin said with a smirk as she tangled their legs together under their sheets. “It’d be nice, you know? Get away from everythin’ and everyone for a little bit,” she murmured. “Wakin’ up some place and not havin’ to wonder if someone else is goin’ to die today, or who it might be. Free from… responsibilities, and stupid people, and all that… fear. Just havin’ some time, just for us,” Selin said as she let out a soft sigh. “Us on the beach, you takin’ your pictures on the beach, gettin’ drinks by the beach, swimmin’ in the beach, us… havin’ sex on the beach,” she added, showing him a warm, playful smile. “What do you say?”

lukas pulls selin into his arms as she spoke, eyes shut for a moment as he imagines them somewhere else that is far away from nightrest and everything that has been going on right now, free from worrying about the people closest to them, from the fear of if he was going to wake up the next day, free from fearing about losing the woman he loves, who was smiling in his arms, staring up at him the second he opens his eyes. he sighs for a moment, kissing selin’s forehead, lips staying there for a moment before he responds. “i go where you go, selin.” he cups her cheek with his hand, thumb circling against it. “i will follow you to the ends of the earth if i have to.”

And that only opened the box full of memories of the problems before they split up, immediately shaking her head to get rid of those thoughts. “Okay, no more work talk. How are you?”

“gave you the best genes, while mine--well...” it doesn’t come up to conversation much, but whenever it does, lukas couldn’t help but think about the story of the day that he met both of his mothers. he doesn’t really remember anything about his biological parents or any of his origin, and he preferred to keep it that way as time went by. at her question, the photographer couldn’t help but sigh. “that’s kind of a simple but...loaded question, analu, you know?” he takes a long sip of his drink. “but i’m doing...alright? still shaken up by everything...but alright. how are you though?”

“i guess i have to thank my mother for giving me a good eye.” lukas gives her a grin in response as he listened to her read out people’s compliments to their photoshoot. he slides a shot over to her. “though i did have a great model, and you know, that’s needed in the mix to have those really good photos i took. i’m glad the client took up on my suggestion and picked you to model for them.”

Her heart was still raw from Vivi’s death, and now Amoni’s, and even though there was a bittersweet feeling that came from the divorce papers signed and her family’s legal team legalizing the divorce, Selin woke up that day with a smile as she looked at Lukas’ face, happy that no matter what, he was still here. He was still hers. Her hand reached out to affectionately run through his messy curls, waiting for him to wake up. “Good morning, baby,” she murmured, as she leaned in to press a soft kiss against his lips. “Let’s go to Bali,” Selin suddenly.

there isn’t a day that’s passed that lukas has struggled to find it in himself to sleep at night without worry in his head, the fear that he won’t be able to wake up from his sleep and not see the woman he was holding on to every single night again. but as his eyes open, the sight of selin smiling made those things in his head dissipate, even just for now, as they were in a little world of their own, away from the danger, from the thought of a murderer looming around town and taking lives in moments people least expects it. “mhmm, morning...” he murmurs sleepily, kissing her back. he was about to bury his face against her neck until those next words leaves selin’s lips. “you’ve been reading my mind, mhmm?”
