Chickering Sons Piano Serial Numbers

As part of our ongoing research, the Chickering Foundation maintains a registry of all extant or known Chickering pianos from before 1890 of which it becomes aware. To have your pre-1890 Chickering (serial numbers below 100,000) included in the Registry, send an email to [email protected]. About the Chickering Foundation.
It is thought that Chickering may have had a duplicate set of serial numbers for grand pianos but this collection lacks that volume. Arrangement This collection organized into seven series. Series 1: Correspondence, 1950. Chickering and Sons Piano Fortes at the Exhibitions of 1856, undated Box 1, Folder 3 A Hundred Years Old, undated.
Here are the TOP FIVE places to locate the serial number of your spinet, console, studio, or upright piano: Serial number locations are found: 1) On the piano’s cast iron plate. After lifting up the lid, look along the top front area of the plate. The serial number may be to the right or the left, or in the middle. 2) Under the opened lid on the ledge, stamped on a little plaque, to the right or to the left. 3) Stamped on the back of the piano.
This piano was made by Chickering & Sons in Boston, Massachusetts in 1857. Chickering called this type of piano a “parlor grand,“ but today it has come to be known as a “cocked-hat grand” because its shape from above is like that of a cocked hat. The piano is serial number 17390 and has a compass of CCC-c5, Edwin Brown, leather and felt hammers, wound and plain steel strings with 1.
Chickering & Sons (not to be confused with Chickering Brothers) was the first piano manufacturer in America.Chickering quickly became one of the largest and most successful piano manufacturers of all time. The firm was originally established in Boston in 1823 by Jonas Chickering and his partner James Stewart under the name of Stewart & Chickering.
Piano serial numbers identify the (1) age of your piano, the (2) piano's year of manufacture, as well as (3) the circumstances surrounding the production of your piano, including factory history, manufacturing processes, and company ownership and oversight.

You can look up a free piano serial number history search from this page (see list of manufacturers, below).
Piano Serial Numbers: Location, location, location...
Piano serial numbers usually have five to seven digits, but may have fewer or more, depending on the manufacturer and age of your piano. Serial numbers may also include a letter as well.

Chickering & Sons Piano Serial Numbers
Note: You may have to remove the (1) music desk first and (2) gently clean out any dust from your piano's plate (using a soft dry cloth + vacuum hose) before you can find these numbers.

Serial number locations are found:
1) On the piano’s cast iron plate, near the tuning pins, as you face the keys. Look to the right or to the left.
2) The Capo d'astro bar. Located on the right, this acts as a 'bridge' to the 'beams' of the cast iron plate.
3) On the piano's soundboard (see link above for a diagram).
4) On a metal plate underneath the piano's top lid, near the strings and soundboard.
5) Immediate interior (front): On the back of the (a) keyslip (long wooden ledge, runs along the front/bottom of the piano's keys. The serial number is often hidden and stamped on the other side, facing the keys). On the front of the (b) action frame (after the keyslip is removed), or stamped on (c) one or both of the cheek blocks, viewed to the right and left of the piano's keyboard.
On older pianos, you may find 3-5 screws, underneath the keyslip, that will need to be removed (or, simply lift up, if no screws are present) to view the action frame. The serial number may be stamped on the front of the frame's wooden base, immediately under the keys.
To the right and left of the keys are two end cheek blocks, which are each secured down with a giant bolt or screw, which passes through the piano's keybed, both of which must be removed, to access the interior of the piano (see video, above).
Caution: When unscrewing and removing the cheek blocks, do not mistake the piano's leg screw/bolt, with the cheek block's screw/bolt.

Also, be careful not to drop the cheek blocks once they are removed, which can gouge and permanently damage the piano's case, and the block's delicate condition.
To recap: the piano's serial number may be hidden on the back of the piano'skeyslip (immediately in front of / below the keys), on the action's frontkeyframe, on the cheek blocks (each side), or within the action itself, once removed from the piano.
Scroll down below to find the (1) manufacturer of your piano, and then (2) click on the link to find the serial number.

Chickering and Sons is a Boston-based piano manufacturing company which is known for their award-winning pianos and music instruments of topnotch quality.
The company experienced changes in ownership and manufacturing management throughout the years although never failing to produce high quality musical instrument that the company name is best associated with.
Company History
The company was founded in 1823 by Jonas Chickering and James Stewart. However, their partnership was dissolved four years later. In 1830, Chickering became partner with John Mackay under the name Chickering and Company and later changed to Chickering and Mackays until the death of senior Mackay in 1841.
The company was reorganized and renamed to Chickering and Sons in 1853 following the destruction of the company’s factory in December 1852 in a massive fire. The company became part of American Piano Company (Ampico) in 1908. Today, the name Chickering and Sons continues to be used as a piano brand under the Baldwin Piano Company, which bought the company’s assets and rights.
Recognition and Contribution to the Field of Piano Development Technology
The most notable contribution of Chickering and Sons piano manufacturing, to the development of piano technology, is their introduction of a one-piece cast iron plate to support the greater string tension of larger pianos.
Jonas Chickering also invented a new deflection of the strings and in 1845 the first convenient method for over stringing in square pianos. Instead of setting the strings side by side, the company introduced substituting an arrangement of the string in two banks, one over the other. This does not only save space but also brings the powerful bass strings directly over the most resonant part of the sound-board, the principle which completes to this day in the construction of all pianos, both grands and uprights.
In 1850, Henry Steinway (Steinweg), founder of Steinway and Sons pianos, showed interest and admiration to the Chickering piano after he saw the piano used during a musical tour in Boston.
In 1867, the brand received the Imperial Cross of the Legion of Honor, one of the world's most prestigious non-military awards, given by Emperor Napoleon III for services to the art of music. The honor was only one of more than 200 awards Chickering has received over the years.

API STANDARD 620 TENTH EDITION, FEBRUARY 2002 ADDENDUM 1, JUNE 2004. E Use Only SPECIAL NOTES. American Petroleum Institute, 1220 L Street, NW, Washington, D.C., [email protected]. E Use Only FOREWORD This standard is based on the accumulated knowledge and experience of purchasers. API 620, Design and Construction of Large, Welded, Low-Pressure Storage Tanks, is a standard developed and published by the American Petroleum Institute that gives requirements for the design and construction of large, welded storage tanks with pressures in their gas or vapor spaces of not more than 15 lbf/in.2 gauge. TANK is a comprehensive engineering software program that designs and analyzes oil storage tanks according to the latest API-650/653 and API-620 codes. For much less than it would cost to build an in-house spreadsheet application, TANK delivers the features and stability typical of an Intergraph software product, including immediate, top-rate. I'm tasked with re-rating some API-620 tanks. I would love some clarification in regards to the free body diagram and force (Pg,Pl,W) sign conventions. Can someone show a better sketch than what is already in the code for a sphere that is ground supported and full nearly to the top with liquid? Thanks in advance.

Erase Hard Drive Mac Os X 10.6 8

Reader Jim Bradley seeks a way to securely wipe the data from his hard drive. He writes:
If you want to completely erase the Mac and get a factory reset Mac OS X version that is blank and back to default settings as if the computer was brand new, this is the process to achieve that. This will reset Mac to the factory default version of Mac OS X on the computer, everything else will be removed in the process. Besides the old OS X systems on Mac, the software can also work with the newer macOS on Mac. It can also remove apps from macOS 10.12 - macOS 10.16. If you want to remove apps easily and for free, AppRemover is the one worth trying. IMPORTANT: This article applies to the following Mac OS X versions: Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Need Help? Not sure which version you are using? Click here to determine your version of macOS; Not seeing your version of macOS?
Mode 2: wipe hard drive under OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. The mode2 can help you wipe entire hard drive under OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Once a hard drive is wiped by AweEraser for Mac, all the data on the hard drive will be permanently erased. Mode 3: erase deleted data under OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you only want to permanently erase already. Another option is, you can download a copy of latest OS X from App Store, then create a bootable USB drive with an application named Disk Maker, boot into that USB drive and erase the hard drive using the Disk Utility in there and install latest OS X. If you would like to do that, please let me know and I will send you instructions.
Some time back there was an ad for software that would erase hard disks with the method approved by the U.S. government by writing 0s and 1s on the drive in several manners. Does such a software still exist, what is the name of the vendor, and is it for the Macintosh (PowerPC and Intel)?
Such software does exist and you’ll be happy to know that it’s free and likely already on your Mac if you’re running Tiger or Leopard. You’ll find it this way:
Launch Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities) and when the application opens select the drive you want to erase in the pane on the left side of the Disk Utility window. Click the Erase tab and then click the Security Options button below. In the sheet that appears you’ll see four options—Don’t Erase Data, Zero Out Data, 7-Pass Erase, and 35-Pass Erase.
The Don’t Erase Data option—as its name implies—doesn’t erase any data. Rather, it wipes out the directory that tells your Mac where your data is. Any number of third-party utilities could scour your drive and recover your data after you’ve employed this option. So, not secure.
Zero Out Data writes zeros over your drive one time. It’s not up to government standards, but recovering data from this drive would be a chore.
7-Pass Erase meets that US Department of Defense 5220-22 M standard about which you’ve heard so many good things. It writes over your data seven times.
And for the truly paran… er, concerned, there’s the 35-Pass Erase option, which, as the name hints, writes junk over your drive 35 times. If you want your data super-mega-ultra-really gone, this is the one to use.
Note that the 7-pass option takes seven times longer to overwrite your data than does the Zero Out Data option. Likewise, the 35-Pass option takes 35 times as long.
If even these options leave you with a slight case of the jim-jams, allow me to propose the Multi-Pass Sledgehammer option. If you need your data to be totally unrecoverable and are willing to sacrifice a hard drive to make that happen, extract the drive from your Mac, take it out back, and beat the living hell out of it.
by Shirly Chen, updated on 2016-10-31 to Mac Data Wipe
I have an old Mac with OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system. Now I am planning to sell it on eBay.com to get money to buy a new MacBook Pro. However, before delivering it to the buyer, I want to make sure all the existing data and history data on the hard drive has been wiped off. I delete all my documents and empty the trash bin, but the deleted documents and other more files still can be recovered by a data recovery program on my Mac. Nowadays, data recovery programs are very popular. So people can recover my deleted documents, intentionally or unintentionally. How can I do to permanently erase hard drive data under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Data Erasure Software
After many times of ‘search & try’, I find this powerful Mac data erasure program – DoYourData Super Eraser for Mac. Thank goodness. It supports for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I download it and install it on my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. It is pretty simple to use. Here I can show how it works to permanently destroy data under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you are going to erase hard drive data under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, you can follow these instructions.
Selectively Erase Files/Folders under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
When I launch it on my Mac, it shows three data erasure modes on the left of the main interface. The first mode is 'Erase Files/Folders'. This mode is designed for permanently erasing selected files or folders on the Mac. I add some documents that contain my private data information, and click on 'Erase Now' button. It is very fast. The selected files are permanently erased within a short time. This is a good option to destroy some files or folders under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Wipe Entire Hard Drive under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
This mode 'Wipe Volume/Device' can erase all existing data and history data/traces on the selected hard drive volume under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Although it can’t wipe the volume that has installed the operating system, it is a good option to wipe other hard drives and external storage devices under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. I just need to select the target hard drive or media and click on 'Wipe Now' button, all the data on the selected hard drive/media will be permanently lost.
Erase Hard Drive Mac Os X 10.6 840
Erase Free Disk Space under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
I love this mode. It only erases the deleted/lost files on my Mac and it will not affect the existing data/files. It is just like erasing Mac trash bin. All the deleted/lost files and disk traces on the Mac will be permanently erased.
Compared with other Mac OS X 10.6 data erasure solutions, DoYourData Super Eraser for Mac is much more efficient. I would like to recommend it to anyone who wants to permanently erase data under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. And it has been developed for all popular Mac operating systems, from OS X 10.6 to latest macOS. So I will install it on my new MacBook Pro.
