“If Jiang Yanli and Jin Zixuan’s only son perished before his eyes, he really wouldn’t know what to do." Quote from MDZS Book 5 by MTXT
I'm not sure what it is about this quote but it rubs me the wrong way about how they're talking about Jin Ling.
It just...
I hate it. I hate how the entire cultivation world knows him as "Jin Guangyao's son" "pitiful orphan" "victim of wwx" "spoiled brat" "little mistress"
Even Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, he's just "shijie's son" "jiejie's son".
He has a name. Jin Ling, Jin Rulan.
To be honest I didn't like him at first, I thought he was pretty spoiled and stuck up too, but it just. It's not fair to him to be simplified into someone's son instead of his own person.
I've finished the main story, and I now think that he is so much more real of a person than I originally thought he was. He's suffered a lot. And the fact that his suffering such as his parents dying, him being left alone in this world, became so well known that that's all anyone seeing him can think of, it's so tragic. Because he's a person, first and foremost. He is his own man. He's a son, yes, but that's not all he is. He's an orphan, yes, but that doesn't mean he's going to be dumber, weaker, more insignificant than any other man.

this "negative" review of guillermo del toro's upcoming frankenstein movie is everything to me
"The Mexican director has chosen to emphasise the romanticism at the expense of the horror. Elordi plays the creature as a misunderstood, James Dean-like outsider with Oedipal issues rather than as an agent of evil and chaos. Even if his face and torso are latticed with suitably grotesque scars, staples and stitches, he is not only the most sympathetic character in the movie but the best-looking one too. It’s left to Oscar Isaac to provide the real villainy as the brilliant but egomaniacal scientist, Victor Frankenstein..."
HELLO YES IT'S ME, MARY SHELLEY CALLING, JUST WANTED TO ASK IF YOU'VE EVER SEEN A GUILLERMO DEL TORO MOVIE OR... I DON'T KNOW... READ MY BOOK?
"The film lurches between scenes of lush romantic melodrama and moments of Grand Guignol bloodletting."

Folks have got to understand that they probably aren't messed up by some Secret Big Trauma that they just can't remember; but rather by a million tiny microtraumas that they do mostly remember but don't even register as traumatic because nobody actually understood that these things would cause trauma, much less stack on each other over the years.

Normal panel to put at the end of a montage where Dick and Helena make out 90% of the time. Yes of course. Lets get to meat of it - Bruce.

I know the "disabled villain" trope isn't good representation but y'know. I DO kind of get it. Sometimes my whole body hurts so bad that I could probably make an evil death laser. Sometimes things claim to be wheelchair accessible and are so incredibly inaccessible that I consider world domination just to fuckin fix it. I can see the appeal of becoming Evil And Scary to stop the stares. I am tired of being Polite and (ironically) Accommodating, answering "what's wrong with you?" over and over. Having minions would also be quite helpful.

“how to recognize AI in fanfic” — hey so this is another not-gentle reminder that AI stole from us. it’s using OUR words and OUR sentences and OUR styles.
writing “long” paragraphs is not a sign of AI — it’s a common narrative choice many writers make both in fanfiction and in traditionally published novels, and AI stole it from us.
using an em dash is not a sign of AI. it’s a stylistic sentence choice that’s been an option in place of commas and semicolons for a very long time, and AI stole it from us.
long sentence structures are not a sign of AI, but are yet another stylistic choice writers often make to create a cadence and tone that mimics the flow of poetry, and AI stole it from us.
“YA narrative breaks”? i don’t even know what the fuck this means, but i can guarantee that AI stole it from us.
italics are once again a stylistic choice that many writers love to use to create emphasis, and it’s a more stylistically acceptable and traditional form of emphasis than bold or underline text. oh, and just to be extra clear: AI STOLE IT FROM US.
stop creating fandom witch hunts over AI when you know fuck all about what it means to sit and write a story, and to spend hours fiddling with sentence structure and dialogue to get the exact right tone. writers will stop writing out of fear that their work “sounds like AI” — IT DOESNT! AI STOLE FROM US! AI SOUNDS LIKE US! — and after a while, all that will be available on AO3 is shitty AI-generated fanfiction.
because yeah, people are going to continue to use AI to write fanfiction whether you “call them out” or not. but making a laughable thread on X that uses asinine criteria is not going to fix that problem. it will just push the real writers out because people will accuse them of using AI when they haven’t, and they will (rightfully) stop writing for spaces that attack them.
anyway. fuck ai.

I got some brainworms regarding Peter's sister. First of all does Johnny know about her? If spideytorch were married how would they first be introduced? Also just married spideytorch in gen with one big family warms my heart <3 anyways love ur stuff :)
Johnny does know about Teresa! He's actually the first person in Peter's life to have met her. (Aside from the Kingpin if we are counting the Kingpin as someone in Peter's life, anyway.)
(Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #1) "My name's Teresa -- I'm his sister." "Wait, what?"
(PPSSM #2) This is Teresa's first appearance since Amazing Spider-Man: Family Business (highly recommend if anyone hasn't read it yet). She and Peter actually believe they're not biological siblings at this point (long story) and yet still refer to each other as brother and sister, which is really cute. Teresa had also temporarily forgotten Peter was Spider-Man when they went their separate ways in Family Business.
The "we met on superhero grindr" panel comes from Johnny and Teresa's first meeting, too.
(PPSSM #2) Smooth, Peter.
So yes, Johnny knows about Teresa, and they got along pretty well, too. I think if they were married when she reappeared she would tease Peter about it (baby sibling rights) but also he already said they "met on a website for lonely superheroes" in canon so for all Teresa knows they're secretly married and unsuccessfully hiding it. (She asks JJJ about it -- Jonah also knows about her -- and he spits out his drink. It's the Daily Bugle's front page story the next day.)
