Sirens, René Lalique
Tumblr media
René Lalique was a noted French Art Nouveau jewellery designer, designing and producing a number of lovely pieces. Let’s admire some of his images of two tailed sirens, both with their tails spread in the siren’s centuries-old style, some with their tails together.
Tumblr media
Two tailed siren on a diadem with opals, about 1901, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris.
She’s carrying a large opal, perhaps retrieved from the ocean depths. In her two tails, curved in the traditional style going back centuries, she holds two opals carved with fish. Her hail trails back to support the wearer’s own hair. Information and image from Nuvo Magazine.
Tumblr media
Siren with two fish tails, enamel and carved crystal pendent, 1902-1912. She’s ducking her head, perhaps in protection, and her two tails start below her shapely thighs. Her wavy hair is shorter than most sirens.
(The information I got is from art auction websites, making it difficult to date this exactly.)
Tumblr media
Two sirens, opal and gold pendant. These two sirens swim together, their tails merging into one. The opals could suggest bubbles or sea foam. From a blog titled “The magnificence of Rene Lalique” by Ceramics and Pottery Arts and Resources, which has a lot of lovely images of his work.
I’ve also found some other siren images by Lalique in glass dishes and vases, which I’ll be posting soon.

I know in Slavic beliefs, there is the Rusalka, who is depicted with both human feet and a fish tail. Have you seen any that depict them as a twin-tailed siren?
Love the blog my Slavic sibling, I WILL be scrolling through everything <3
Oh, I love this question! While it’d make sense for someone to depict rusalka with two tails, as two-tailed imagery started in ancient Scythian territories in southeastern Ukraine & southern Russia, which is where rusalka folktales are the most popular, I unfortunately haven’t found any yet. Same with other Slavic water spirits, like vodianoi, bereginia, or mavka.
However, bereginia imagery in embroidery does echo potnia theron imagery to me, and is something I should do a post on.
The only similar image I found is this illustration of a vodianoi by Sophie Schiller in “Russian Folk Belief.” While he’s a single-tailed merman, he’s holding curling vines in his outstretched hands, reminding me a bit of the Scythian ancestral goddess.
Tumblr media
I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open for two tailed rusalki, though!

living next to a body of water never gets old. I don't think it even matters if its the ocean or a lake or a little creek or whatever. lizard brain sees big pond and lights up instantly and says "perfect, we will zone out in front of this for 15-30 minutes and go home refreshed."
