One of the most memorable moments of my career was working on a profile of the designer Azzedine Alaia in Paris in January 2011. Alaia realty gave in depth interviews and certainly not to any US magazines. The profile included a cover shoot with Stephanie Seymour. Just past lunch break the designer went to the market to get fish for dinner. When dinner in his kitchen was finished at around near midnight, Mr Alaia and I went upstairs to his desk in the studio and he talked while working on the cut of a new dress on a mannequin. We finished talking past two in the morning. In fashion there isn't anymore who work like Alaia who opted for his own pace rather than submit to the fashion system. His singular focus on creating clothes that revolves around the woman's body with innovative cuts and materiala without any concerns over marketing and publicity is a unique model today and one that many luxury brands should study and embrace instead of discard. It isn't common that clothes silhouettes can be instantly recognizable - an Alaia dress or coat or leather jacket is always recognized immediately as Alaia. His philosophy and his impact on modern fashion will be missed - a void now that can never be filled again. The photographer Gilles Bensimon, a friend and early supporter, shot the story and also took these 'backstage' moments as we prepare Stephanie for the set. RIP (tại New York, New York)
