She kind of was the last person he wanted this advice from, but he had to grow up and be an adult these days. He had Charlotte now, what use was there in being bitter over an ex girlfriend? Or fiancé, in Loren’s case. “If I want my kitchen and hotel to burn down, I’ll know exactly who to ask.” Joked Kaleb, trying to make nice. “Getting someone to fill the role is easy, it’s finding someone who is good. I can’t have an amateur during the Christmas season.”
Tumblr media
“Excuse me, I’ve never actually set fire to anything. Granted, I’ve overcooked a few things, but I’ve never had to use the extinguisher,” she said proudly, as if she had anything to actually be proud of. She was a terrible cook. He was probably the only person in the world who knew just how bad she was. After all, she’d attempted to make him dinner on multiple occasions. “Just post an add on Craigslist or something. You’ll find someone.”

“I cannot believe it, one of my top chefs has managed to slice off of the tip of their finger and with only a few weeks until Christmas. What am I supposed to do? With everyone coming down with this wretched illness I’m going to have to find people before things get wild.” Kaleb was stressed, beyond stressed. He had a hotel to run and a kitchen down three chefs at the busiest time of the year. “At least 50% of our income is the restaurant and I can’t have people working over time during the Christmas period, that’s unfair, they have families too.”
Tumblr media
“I’d offer to help, but you know I’m useless in the kitchen. Plus, I don’t really want to,” she said, bluntly honest as per usual. She doubted he even realized who he was venting to, which was a testament to how stressed he was. Loren was most likely the last person he wanted to be telling these things to. “I’m sure there are plenty of aspiring cooks looking for work in London. Just post an ad or something. Isn’t that how it works?”

“Some might see that as a positive,” she shrugged. “Oh no honey, that’s definitely not the way. The moment you do that, kiss your identity goodbye. Even if it’s for a couple of hours of being with the in-crowd.” In her mind, and from experience, limiting oneself to fit in with a certain clique never paid off. Everyone is better off being themselves. “Avoid them, and be happy. You can make friends with other dancers. I bet at least one of them in that group is faking their pumpkin spice latte love,” Yara mused with a chuckle.
Tumblr media
“Sure, but not fitting in is making me stand out. They don’t want some rogue ballerina who can’t make friends with the other dancers. Not that the lot of them are actually friends. I bet they all secret want to see each other fail,” she said bitterly, knowing that most likely wasn’t the case. She knew better than to enforce lame ballerina stereotypes, but this particular one did make her feel slightly better. “Are you always this wise?”

Loren groaned as she was pulled harder against her leg, losing her cool for a hot second. Her hips rocked against the brunette underneath her, her lips still roaming down her neck, across her collarbone. Her fingers skimmed their way down her toned stomach, slipping just under the waistband of her underwear and stopping there. If Avery was going to tease her, the blonde would definitely return the favor. This was so worth the three hours she sat in the stands watching a boring game of football.

This was unlike Loren. She didn’t meet up with random people and sleep with them the first night. She also hadn’t had sex in almost a year and that clouded her judgment a little bit. Thankfully, Avery seemed to need this as much as she did and Lo doubted she was the type to get clingy after the fact. It felt like they’d been in her apartment for half a minute and already their clothes were on the floor, the footballer’s leg pressing between her legs. The blonde whimpered against the other girl’s lips, her hands slipping underneath her body to unclasp her bra as she broke the kiss to drag her lips down to the bend of her neck.

Loren let out a quiet gasp when Avery told her to shut up, but the footballer’s lips didn’t give her a chance to sass back. She didn’t insist, knowing she’d get a chance to get back at her soon enough. She followed her lead, getting rid of the brunette’s shirt so it could join her own on the floor. Her hands slipped between their bodies, her fingers fumbling with the zipper of the other woman’s jean clumsily while attempting not to break the kiss. It almost annoyed Loren that Avery had gotten the jump on taking off the other’s clothes. If there was one thing that she hated it was not being in total control.

“I haven’t exactly lost anything yet.” After all, she’d gotten the blonde back to her apartment without actual fuss and the way things were going so far only led her to believe that she’d have yet another win for the night. “So did lots of people.” It was wild thinking about how many options she had; how many people that would’ve done anything to get within even two feet of her. Loren didn’t seem to care that much though, which frustrated the footballer to no end. As expected though, the small space between them closed almost instantly as she’d stepped forwards, the blonde accepting her challenge with ease. Eager to return the desire for more of this and less talking, Avery’s arm curled around the woman’s waist, holding tight as lips dared to work in rhythm with Loren’s.
“You will,” Loren said without hesitation, that confident that her winning streak wouldn’t end because of Avery. Although there was a part of her that wanted to meet her match. “So you keep reminding me. Yet, I’m the one standing in your apartment and not the groupie behind me that flashed you mid-game.” She hadn’t followed the brunette home because of who she was or what she did, it was purely a physical thing. She was a ballerina and she cared very little about football. Her fingers curled in Avery’s dark locks, pulling her closer and backing them against the couch with ease.

“Yeah, whatever,” she hummed partially in defeat. This wasn’t supposed to be anything meaningful, not even in the slightest of ways. Clearly they both needed a good time and if that’s all this ever amounted to, then Avery couldn’t complain. “All of the work? Seems to me you’ve hardly done anything yet,” she challenged in return, closing the space between themas they both wanted to do. “Trust me. I work for what I want. Don’t have to worry about that.”
Tumblr media
“Not used to loising, are you? Is your ego a bit bruised?” Loren asked her in a obnoxiously cheery tone. If there was anything she excelled at it was provocation. This was the exact reason she had no friends. “I sat through an entire football game, I’d say that’s plenty.” It hadn’t been that bad. The general mood there had been kind of contagious, but she’d never admit that to Avery. She didn’t flinch when the brunette stepped closer to her, on the contrary. Loren’s lips found hers, her arms wrapping around her neck loosely to tug her closer.

“Guess we’ll have to see about that one,” she shot back, eyes rolling. Loren was frustrating, but she was a pretty face with a colorful personality. Avery needed more people like that in her life, especially during a time of self-exploration and all that. The brunette tried to bite back the arrogant grin that played onto her lips, but failed miserably in doing so. She already knew Loren hadn’t came back to her place to talk crap and eat takeout, but she’d played along for the brief jab session. “Alright then. What do you want?”
Tumblr media
“I’m not too worried, I can see it’s working,” she said matter of factly. It was obvious Avery liked what she saw, just like Loren liked what she saw when she looked at the football player. This was nothing serious. It wouldn’t distract her from what she really cared about, but it would distract her temporarily from the constant loneliness she felt and that was good enough for her. “You know what I want, Avery. Are you really going to make me do all the work?”

No, he didn’t get over it in ‘no time’. He still wasn’t over it. He couldn’t be when she was the first woman to leave him like that. He wasn’t used to not being the one who called the shots, but he couldn’t be a child and admit to something like that. It was selfish to want to be the one who ended things but he always thought that being the one in control meant you hurt less. “I guess I’ll be seeing you around here more often then.”
Tumblr media
Loren had to stop herself from cringing when he pointed out the undeniable fact that they would run into each other again. She wasn’t looking forward to suffer through even more awkward small talk. She couldn’t imagine he wanted to see her again either. “You probably will,” she admitted without so much as a smile. “Is that okay? I’m not blacklisted yet?”

“The fun is in the chase.” Or so she assumed. Relationships or anything of the sort had never been on her radar. No, she’d focused on football and football alone; no room for complications outside of that. “What kind of takeout? Chinese? Pizza? Name it and it’ll be here rather quickly,” she assured, happy that yet another perk of playing professionally meant getting topnotch service wherever she wanted. “Pick your poison,” she challenged, arms over her chest as she awaited the blonde’s reply.
Tumblr media
“You’re in for a treat then,” she said with a scoff. Not everyone liked her attitude, but it sure seemed to be a plus for Avery. “Oh, will it? Is this like a hotel? Room service included?” She scoffed, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t aspire to this kind of wealth one day. Loren had always been overly ambitious and this seemed to be as good as it got. “Honestly? That’s not the kind of hungry I am right now.”

Right she may have been, but that didn’t mean that he wanted to admit it. “We were good together. I won’t stand here and pretend like we didn’t make each other happy.” He distracted her from her work, he knew that, he understood their careers were important but he never expected her to make herself take an ultimatum. Kaleb was under the impress they’d thrive together, too. “You did what you wanted to.”
Tumblr media
“I’m not saying we didn’t have our good moments, I’m saying that we distracted each other. I know that we were good together or whatever,” she admitted stubbornly, averting her gaze. They had their good moments, there was no denying that, but she lost sight of her goals and that couldn’t happen again. “I’m sure you got over it in no time.”

Yara laughed. True, having to taste the ridiculous concoction was punishment enough, so she held her tongue. “I’m sure you can still hang out with them, even if you order another beverage.” Yara had long since learned that changing yourself to please others was never in anyone’s best interest. “I vote that you go. Being the new girl is a challenge, especially in such a competitive arena. Try not to miss out on the bonding experience, you could end up finding some common ground with them.”
“That’s not the point,” Loren said with a dramatic sigh. “The point is I have nothing in common with them. Not even this stupid drink.” The blonde chuckled, hearing some truth in her advice. “Good point, but I don’t think I could sit there with a straight face while they drink this shit.” She motioned towards the cup that would most definitely end up in the trash. “I think what I need is to learn to keep my mouth shut. Maybe people would like me more then.”

“Four years worth of doing what I love and I get compensated quite well for it.” It was everyone’s dream to do what they loved and to love what they do. Avery got both and got paid fairly well to do it. “I don’t really care what it is if we’re being honest.” She’d gotten the blonde this far, why it’d have to stop now? “If you weren’t interested, you would’ve left back at the stadium. I think you know what you want.” Smirking, Avery pulled off her warmup jacket, tossing it onto the couch in a smooth movement. “All night, huh? I’d expect nothing less.”
“Clearly,” Loren said simply, still looking around the spacious apartment. What she didn’t pay well, but she was lucky enough to have very wealthy parents. Not wealthy enough to afford this kind of flat, though. “Now who’s playing hard to get?” She scoffed, leaning against the couch as Avery got read of her coat. “Maybe I’m just starving and hoping you’ll get some takeout. You’re very presumptuous.”

strikeravery‌:
Loren bothered her in all the right ways. She was a pain in the ass, a pain that Avery didn’t have to put up with. If she wanted to get laid the easy way, she had more than a few options already laid out. In fact, she was sure she could’ve taken home at least half the stadium after win she’d pulled off. “It’s not. Just two gals having a little fun. No need to label anything.” This was all new territory, but it felt natural in a way. It was like a game of cat and mouse, neither wanting to seem too eager to catch the other. “I always liked a good challenge.”
Tumblr media
With that, Avery didn’t give the blonde much more of a chance to complain or play hard to get. The pair left the stadium, surely leaving many curious as to what was happening. Playful banter was spit back and forth until the forward was unlocking the front door to her luxurious apartment. “You don’t have to play so hard to get,” she hummed, closing the door behind them with ease. “Don’t get me wrong, it looks good on you, but doesn’t it get exhausting?”
“If you say so,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders, her lips curling up into a smile. “You practically begged to get me here, that sounds an awful lot to me like a date.” It wasn’t a date, but she knew implying it was would bother Avery. She didn’t seem like the romantic date kind of girl. “Well, in that case, I can assure you you’ve got your hands full with me.”
Tumblr media
Loren kept up the sass as they made their way to the football star’s apartment, wanting to keep her on her toes. “Nice place,” she commented as she walked through the door and scanned her surroundings. “Who says it’s an act? Maybe I’m just not that interested. I’m definitely not exhausted, that’s for sure. I could do this all night.”

“Wanna know a little secret?” Taking a moment, Avery glanced around the stadium, causing a rise in more than a few fans still left standing. She smiled wildly, soaking up every second of the commotion before turning back to Loren with a shrug. “There’s at least one hundred other girls wishing they were in your place right now. If you don’t wanna come back, that’s on you.” She wasn’t used to being like this, but truth be told, it felt good. “But, there’s only one of them that I want right now. So, I guess that means it’s up to you on whether or not you come home with me. You suffered through ninety minutes of a sport you don’t even like. The least I can do is try and make it up to you.”
Tumblr media
“Not really,” Loren said immediately, although she was a little intrigued by what she could possibly have to say. “Is that supposed to make me want you? I wasn’t aware this was a date.” Granted, there were quite a few people in the stadium that seemed more than interested in being in her place. That made Loren feel like she’d won some kind of game and it made things all the more interesting for her. “I guess that sounds interesting. If you can make it up to me remains to be seen, though.”

“Ouch” said Tamsin. “Sadly, I can confirm how painful those are.” Not so much form the drilling as from having to keep your mouth open. It was something she’d found out the hard way. “Exactly. But I suppose those people are looking to get rich quick, rather than put in any effort.” As far as the librarian was concerned, those people deserved all the public humiliation they got.
Tumblr media
“So can I, not my greatest memories, but better than being a contestant on a reality show,” she said with a chuckle. Maybe it was a bit dramatic, but it got her point across. “There’s always a catch to getting rich quickly, isn’t there? In this case, the catch is that no one will ever take them seriously ever again.”
