Weird industry rabbit hole here but thought this was an interesting demonstration of a new (as of 6 years ago) stone slab polishing machine that was apparently designed to replicate the absolute uniformity that can only be achieved from a master craftsperson while optimizing productivity and scale necessary for this big business of granite polishing. The master craftsperson apparently generates more uniform polishing results than conventional machines do because the human touch has an element of independence to it; the human is not programmed to repeat one motion over and over again as a conventional polishing machine is. In contrast, the fancy pants Orbital polisher thing showcased here can replicate the superior uniformity achievable only by the master craftsperson through the use of a dozen or so independently moving polishing arms. These go back and forth across the slab at their own pace which counterintuitively (to me) means that the final result is much more uniform across the entire slab surface, in contrast polishing arms that move at the same rate and repeat the same motion over and over again. Maybe it's an outcome of working with something as hard as stone and the endless passes of the polishing implement (human or machine) needed to make it shine that flips the prevailing assumptions around human-variable , machine-uniform. Whereas something as imprintable or soft as like a chunk of glass or something would readily show the fallible hand of human action upon its face - along with the machine-steady rigidity that might come from a non-human technical implement designed for the purpose, repeat this process a thousand or two thousand times and eventually the human's independence of movement adds up to something surpassing machine uniformity, albeit only at such a large scale. Only by replicating the indpendence of human movement, or dare I say Agency, can a machine yield similarly uniform results, at least in the context of polishing rocks.

Waiting for my car's brake's to be fixed, I wrote a python script to extract 200 or so random-length segments from four different Librivox recordings of Shelley's Frankenstein and then append them all together and the results are just about as I predicted, as is the metaphor.
Text is from an online auto-transcription app called "Notta"

I'm/ve been getting pretty into Poetry™ recently, like totally ovan-guard stuff most people probably haven't heard of. It's an acquired taste really and not for everyone but there is some real profound beauty if you're willing to look for it. Anyway, i think I found my current fav so posting it here for the posterritory (woefully tumblr only allows 10MB max file size so this is a 3-minute down-sampled excerpt of the more profound 15-minute performance from 1960). Whole mp3 can be downloaded at ubu.com
