winona  hated  to  sound  as  painfully  dull  as  she  knew  herself  to  be,  but  she  just  had  to  agree.  “you're  right…”  she  reaches  for  a  box  off  the  shelf,  holding  it  up  for  the  two  of  them  to  see.  “who,  um,  who  needs  FROSTED  FLAKES  GLAZED  DONUT  HOLES  ?  it's  just  too  much.”  the  mere  idea  of  it  makes  her  stomach  hurt.  she  understands  why  some  people  may  think  it  was  smart  to  start  their  day  off  with  a  lot  of  sugar,  but…  this  much  sugar  ?  she  puts  the  box  back  and  shakes  her  head.  “is  it,  uh,  the  texture  ?  i  know  that  gets  a  lot  of  people…”  of  course  she  liked  oatmeal  –  she  was  a  boring  girl.  but  she'd  taken  pride  in  that.  “it's  fine,  i  didn't  consider  it  an  interruption."  she  was  happy  to  have  made  it  through  an  interaction  with  a  stranger  in  the  grocery  store  without  chickening  out.  a  win  was  a  win.  “nice  to  meet  you,  henry.  i'm  winnie.  like  the  cartoon  bear.”

Henry smiled a little as the young woman spoke to him. “They keep coming up with all these flavors,” he said. “I wish they would just…well, stop.” He smiled softly again as he looked over at her. “If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, as they say.” He gave a little shake of his head. “No,” he admitted. “I’m not an especially big fan of oatmeal. I usually get the same simple cereal, but it appears they don’t have it.” A slight frown creased his features as he spoke. He still couldn’t quite understand how that could have happened. He smiled a little. “I’m sorry for interrupting your shopping,” he added, feeling a little sheepish that he was complaining about such silly things. “I might as well introduce myself, I suppose. My name is Henry.”

“my  apartment  doesn't  really  have  a  COLOR  SCHEME.”  because,  nobody  with  any  sense  of  anything  would  consider  atlas  an  interior  designer  by  any  means.  “yeah,  i  just  don't  want  an  UGLY  CLOCK.  god  forbid  someone  comes  over,  hates  it,  and  now  i'm  known  around  town  as  the  guy  with  a  clock  not  worth  seeing.”  atlas  was  known  to  overthink,  so  spiraling  over  something  that  would  go  on  his  wall  was  pretty  on  par  for  the  course.  “i  mean,  i  meant  it  as  a  joke.  i  clearly  don't  even  own  a  clock.  why  ?  would  you  like  to  be  the  first  to  take  the  test  ?”  he  looks  at  the  clock  she  suggests,  pondering.  “does  it  seem  boring  ?  i  was  kind  of  hoping  for  something  SLEEK.  what  about  this  one  ?”  he  holds  up  a  black  clock  with  grey  accents. 

bella  had  no  idea  people  were  still  using  clocks  these  days.  let  alone  even  stressed  out  about  the  fact  that  they  had  to  spend  their  time  even  choosing  one.  "  i  mean,  yeah,  you  know..  one  that  would  go  with  your  apartment.  "  knowing  some  people  were  particular  about  the  kind  of  decor  that  they  would've  wanted  to  choose.  "  if  you  don't  care  about  that  ...  then  ...  i  suppose  it  wouldn't  really  matter  much,  right?  "  she  shrugged  her  shoulders,  eyebrow  raising  at  his  mention  of  what  he'd  be  using  it  for.  "  were  you  kidding  or  are  you  actually  using  it  for  that?  "  bella  looked  around  for  a  second  until  she  found  one  that  looked  like  it  could  be  decent  enough.  seemed  like  a  standard,  yet  classic  clock  with  a  white  border  around  it;  hoping  it  was  still  in  good  condition.  "  what  about  this  one?  it's  not  too  big  or  too  small  and  looks  like  it  may  be  what  you're  looking  for..  then  again,  i  don't  really know? i've never had to purchase one before. i'm the worst person you could've possibly chose to ask. "

“oh,  so  i  am  just  the  last  to  know  ?”  atlas  and  clark  had  never  had  a  particularly  close  relationship.  it  was  fine  –  they  each  had  siblings  closer  to  their  age  that  they  confided  in  and  spent  more  time  with.  they  both  seemed  comfortable  with  where  their  relationship  was  at,  so  why  fix  what  neither  considered  to  be  broken  ?  “her  name  is  blair  and  she  works  at  retro  roots,  I  ALREADY  KNOW  THAT.”  he  rolls  his  eyes.  “what  does  marco  think  of  her  ?” /  @dcwnfalls

“  you're  funny  ,  ”  clark  muses  ,  eyes  fixed  downward,  fingertips  dancing  lightly  on  the  weathered  surface  of  their  table  .  eventually  ,  he  looks  up  with  a  knowing  smile  .  sadness  crept  behind  his  features  ,  but  not  long  enough  to  notice  or  for  hopefully  anyone  to  care  .  “  she's  not  a  secret  ,  ”  he  clarifies  ,  even  though  she  very  much  was  up  until  now  .  “  her  name  is  blair  ,  ”  he  starts  ,  taking  a  sip  of  his  drink  as  to  stall  a  bit  .  of  course  atlas  would  bring  something  this  delicate  up  in  the  very  small  window  marco  had  excused  himself  .  “  what  do  you  want  to  know  ?  ”  hopefully  nothing  . @loversfms

“CUTE  STORY,”  she  pulls  a  cigarette  out  of  the  box  before  reaching  for  the  lighter.  “if  i  had  something  of  my  brother's,  i'd  simply  throw  it  away.  throw  it  in  the  ocean  ?  maybe  BURN  IT  ?”  she  places  the  cigarette  between  her  lips  and  flicks  the  lighter  on,  guiding  the  flame  to  the  tip.  she  takes  a  deep  inhale  before  removing  it  from  her  mouth,  blowing  smoke  in  the  opposite  direction.  she  holds  the  lighter  back  in  his  direction,  almost  eager  to  get  it  out  of  her  possession.

eyes  glance  over  at  a  voice  that  shouldn't  be  familiar  .  cigarette  dangles  between  his  lips  ,  reaching  for  his  pocket  and  handing  over  a  busted  lighter  ,  “  this  is  important  to  me  ,  ”  he  mutters  ,  bringing  the  cigarette  away  from  his  lips  — mindful  to  not  blow  any  smoke  in  her  direction  .  “  my  brother  — ”  or  one  of  them  he  should  say  ,  “  gave  it  to  me  before  i  moved  away  .  ”  well  ,  that  was  a  lie  .  clark  swiped  it  from  marco  before  he  left  ,  but  he  was  positive  marco  didn't  mind  .  after  all  ,  he  never  said  anything  about  it  .

the  arm  takes  her  by  surprise,  but  she  doesn't  dislike  it.  in  fact,  she  probably  likes  it  more  than  she  should  –  which  seemed  to  be  the  theme  of  the  evening.  milo  surprising  her  in  ways  she  could've  never  imagined,  and  her  enjoying  every  second.  she  drags  her  nails  up  and  down  his  forearm,  feeling  her  eyelids  getting  heavy.  “THANKS  FOR  INVITING  ME.”  she  brings  the  back  of  his  hand  to  her  lips  and  presses  a  kiss  to  his  skin  softly.  they're  both  nearly  asleep,  so  she  wants  to  squeeze  one  last  moment  of  affection  before  the  reality  of  tomorrow  resets  them.  she  returns  his  arm  to  its  original  position,  eyes  no  longer  able  to  stay  open. 

he  could  get  used  to  this  .  the  two  of  them  .  it's  the  same  as  it's  always  been  except  when  it's  not  .  milo  lays  down  next  to  teddy  ,  something  they've  done  a  hundred  times  before  .  this  time  ,  he  snuggles  into  her  ,  wrapping  an  arm  overtop  her  .  his  heart  is  beating  out  of  his  chest  .  he's  scared  she  can  feel  it  against  her  back  .  is  this  okay  ?  he  curses  himself  for  being  so  self-conscious  .  he's  never  cared  about  stuff  like  this  before  .  what's  different  now  .  “  thanks  for  coming  over  ,  ”  he  mutters  into  her  neck  ,  sleep  taking  over  .  he  yawns  .  he's  fading  in  &  out  fast  .  relaxed  as  ever  ,  his  breathing  steadies  .  moments  pass  .  “  g'night  ,  ”  barely  audible  ,  “  love  you  .  ”  a  slur  of  words  .  he's  out  cold  .

“A  HOME-COOKED  MEAL  made  by  my  sweet  roommate  ?!  the  universe  is  just  giving  me  the  perfect  day  !”  of  course,  the  idea  of  her  and  magnolia  in  the  kitchen  together  was  one  something  from  someone's  nightmares,  but  theodora  was  down  for  any  experience  at  least  once.  “but  asking  me  my  favorite  food  …  that's  a  tough  one  !!  it's  always  changing.  maybe  you  should  list  some  foods  in  your  wheelhouse  and  i  can  pick  from  there.”

“a  moment  worthy  of  the  fridge  !”  magnolia  exclaimed,  tangling  her  arm  with  theodora's  and  guiding  them  away  from  the  lanes.  relief  washed  over  her  at  the  realization  that  she  would  not  have  to  try  her  own  luck,  her  attempt  at  deflecting  working  as  planned.  besides,  she'd  pissed  off  the  universe  one  too  many  times  lately.  “yes,  it  needs  to  know  we  know  how  to  say  thank  you  and  exit  quietly.  –  what  are  you  feeling  ?  my  treat  !  –  or  you  know  what,  i'm  feeling  adventurous  tonight.  since  you  got  your  (  deserved  )  win  for  the  night,  i'm  going  to  make  us  your  favorite  food  !”  well,  she'd  have  to  figure  out  how  to  work  the  stove  first…  but  the  enthusiasm  was  there.

“it  really  bothers  me  that  you've  put  it  that  way.  i  don't  think  i'll  ever  forget  it,  and  it's  a  really  unsettling  image.”  she  grimaces  slightly  with  a  quick  shake  of  her  head.  “yeah,  the  humidity  is  fucking  awful.  i  think  i've  kind  of  given  up.  if  hairspray  and  a  quick  request  to  the  universe  isn't  enough  to  keep  me  looking  halfway  decent,  it's  just  not  my  day  to  look  good.”  not  that  she  had  been  putting  extra  work  into  her  appearance  lately.  she  just  hoped  that,  even  if  she  didn't  look  amazing,  she  still  looked  put  together  enough.  she  did  always  keep  a  comb  in  her  bag,  though,  just  in  case.  “i  don't  know  if  i  could  chase  after  dogs  all  day.  i  have  trouble  keeping  up  with  one  ferret.  i  don't  know  how  you  do  it  !!  although,  i  guess  your  whole  job  isn't  just  chasing  dogs.  but  i  probably  couldn't  do  the  DOCTOR  stuff,  either."  she  reaches  for  a  pack  of  sugar,  both  to  fidget  with  and  to  put  in  her  coffee.  “it's  okay.  i'm  always  in  my  head  about  what  kind  of  friend  i'm  being.  i  think  as  long  as  we're  putting  our  best  food  forward  with  out  friends,  we  can  take  pride  in  that.”

"I'm very happy to hear that, dental hygiene is so important. Like our bones are just out there, exposed to the elements!" Tabby said, ending a little louder than she should've and pulling back with an embarrassed smile. "That's true. But sometimes I hate going outside because of the humidity. Like I walk outside and my hair becomes a poofy ball." She explained, smoothing down her hair a little. Things like that made her miss New York. Sure, that place got humid, but not like Florida. "Well yeah, but if we take them back to the big lab or exam room, they can get away and we have to chase them. They can't escape or anything, but behind all the individual patient rooms is a huge back area with the machines and some kennels." A waitress came by and refilled their coffee mugs, Tabby giving her a grateful smile. She didn't always like coffee, but there were days when she found herself needing it. After her shift today, she definitely did. "You got it. Maybe I'll make a fun punch too! Thanks Thea, I know you don't feel that way, but I get worried about it. Like, I can get so busy, but I don't want to neglect anyone."

atlas  more  than  understands  the  sentiment  –  there  are  many  things  he'd  like  to  do  for  marco  to  repay  him  for  the  years  he  spent  basically  raising  atlas.  but,  in  true  little  brother  fashion  (  or  was  it  just  atlas  fashion  ?  )  he'd  failed  to  rise  to  the  occasion.  so,  instead,  he  thinks  helping  edgar  could  kick  off  his  repayment  plan.  “yeah,  man,  you're  BRAVER  THAN  ME.  i  think  the  last  time  i  made  him  anything  i  was  ten  and  it  was  a  peanut  butter  and  jelly  sandwich.”  atlas  had  learned  early  on  to  leave  the  cooking  to  the  expert  (  marco  ).  “but,  if  i  know  marco,  he'll  appreciate  the  effort  nonetheless.  and,  even  more  than  that,  he'll  appreciate  a  night  off  of  his  feet.”

Grocery shopping was not a household task that Edgar was responsible for. After all, Marco was the chef in the family. On the rare chance that he did not feel like cooking, Edgar was usually too willing to order out. "I just want to do something nice for your brother," Edgar explained, picking up a bottle of honey. Maybe one day he'd take up beekeeping. It seemed like an interesting enough hobby. "But maybe thinking of cooking him dinner is a silly idea." The statement sounded more like a question, the uncertainty in Edgar's tone shining through. "He's a professional after all. So, it's not like I could do better than him."

time  with  milo  was  rarely  silent  (  mostly  because  theodora  had  trouble  not  speaking  at  any  possible  moment  ),  but  this  wasn't  an  unwelcomed  silence.  she  could  feel  herself  getting  used  to  this.  AND  MAYBE  THAT  WAS  THE  PROBLEM  –  the  way  she  can't  help  but  lean  into  it.  all  it  takes  for  her  eyes  to  flutter  shut  is  his  hands  through  her  hair,  and  once  his  lips  made  contact  with  her  ?  she  was  a  goner.  as  always,  she  follows  his  lead,  but  it's  clear  they're  both  losing  steam.  she  hates  to  do  it,  but  she's  the  one  to  tap  out.  “getting  sleepy,”  she  tells  him,  slowly  sinking  down  until  her  head  reaches  a  pillow.  she  pulls  another  pillow  and  places  it  directly  next  to  hers,  patting  it  as  an  invitation to join her. 

as  far  as  he's  concerned  ,  theodora  is  the  only  promise  he  can  keep  at  this  very  moment  in  time  .  he  looks  at  her  — really  looks  at  her  .  examining  her  features  like  it  might  be  the  last  time  he  looks  at  them  .  “  let's  just  be  us  then  ,  ”  he  settles  ,  finally  breaking  the  silence  he  had  started  .  the  laptop  closes  ,  pushed  to  the  side  .  is  it  lame  ?  how  he  runs  his  fingers  through  her  hair  ?  how  there  is  a  soft  exhale  between  them  ?  it's  all  very  natural  ,  which  makes  everything  worse  .  before  he  knows  it  ,  the  walls  are  coming  down  and  he's  relaxed  .  relaxed  enough  to  fall  in  many  forms  of  the  word  — but  for  now  ,  he  grows  tired  .  he  grows  tired  despite  how  much  he  never  wants  this  night  to  end  .  he  peppers  kisses  along  her  neck  to  her  cheeks  and  eventually  meeting  her  back  at  her  lips  ,  each  one  growing  lazier  and  lazier  .
