WEEK 10 – ACTIVITY 4: GALLERY REVEAL-JOURNAL
A blog-journal written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Tumblr media
Nonverbal expressions or actions are the means through which information is communicated via body language. This, in my opinion, encompasses facial expressions, gestures, paralinguistic such as volume or tone of voice, body language, proxemics or personal space, eye gaze, haptics or touch, and appearance. Personally, I believe that the most noticeable and often utilized nonverbal action is facial expressions. Generally, I use this with everyone with whom I contact, particularly my younger sibling. For instance, whenever my brother and I disagree. When he notices both my eyes widen, brows furrow, and nostrils stretch in annoyance during the argument, he will automatically know that I am already extremely upset about it. Consequently, he would ultimately approach me, seek forgiveness, and attempt to mediate the conflict. Even without talking verbally, he was able to comprehend what I was feeling. This shows how efficient nonverbal communication is in the means of understanding oneself.
Tumblr media
Moreover, I cannot deny that these nonverbal signals assist me in expressing myself in a particular manner. They're important because they communicate to the person with whom you're talking whether or not you care if you're honest and how effectively you're listening. When your nonverbal signals match your verbal communication, you build trust, clarity, and mutual understanding. Furthermore, I believe in part that actions speak louder than words. When everything is said and done, measures provide meaning to your comments, produce outcomes, and ultimately have a more extraordinary ability to influence others than words do. It is critical to follow through on actions so that your efforts are consistent with your comments. To conclude, since words have no effect, actions are much more powerful and significant than words.

Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
The Women's Rhythmic Individual All-Around Final Competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held at the Arena Olímpica do Rio on August 20, 2016. The whole competition constitutes a total of 26 competitors from 24 nations all-around the world. In the end, Margarita Mamun from Russia won the gold with a total score of 76.483, Yana Kudryavtseva from Russia won the silver with a total score of 75.608, and Ganna Rizatdinova from Ukraine won the bronze with a total score of 73.583.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the scorching competition between the 26 competitors from 24 nations was held at the 2016 Summer Olympics was held at the Arena Olímpica do Rio. For its court dimensions, the single case coverage area is 7m x 7m, and the duo, trio, and group performance area are 10m x 10m. However, normally, the competition area is 13 m x 13 m (approx. 42.5ft. square). A black delimitation strip surrounds the competition field. T he boundary is horizontal, still, and equal in height to the output area. It has a surface area of 100cm. The safety zone is also 100cm in length.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Hoop - Swings, rolls, tosses and catches, flips, moves around and over the hoop, rotations of the hoop on the court, and rotations of the hoop around the hand and other areas of the body are all common hoop motions. The high throws and intricate strategies for capturing the hoop in a different way each time are most impressive.
Specs:
Material: wood or plastic Diameter: Interior is 80-90 cm (31.2-35.1 in) Weight: 300 grams (10.5 oz) min.
2. Ball - Waves, loops, throws and catches, movement with the ball held in one side, bouncing and moving the ball on the floor and over different areas of the body are all important motions.
Specs:
Material: rubber or synthetic material Diameter: 18-20 cm (7-7.8 in) Weight: 400 grams (14 oz.) min.
3. Jugging clubs - Popular tricks include swings, big and small loops, mills, throws and catches, and rhythmical tapping.

4. Ribbon - Snakes, spirals, swings, arcs, throws and captures, and figure-eight motions are popular in ribbon routines. The ribbon must be continually moving.
Specs:
Material: stick – wood or synthetic material; Ribbon – satin or similar non-starched material Diameter/width: stick – 1 cm (0.39 in); ribbon – 4-6 cm (1.56-2.34 in) Length: stick – 50-60 cm (19.5-23.4 in); ribbon – 6 m (6.54 yds.) Weight: ribbon, 35 grams (1.225 oz) min.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Beginner Rhythmic
Correct Body Position. This is absolutely critical to progress in rhythmic gymnastics. All body and equipment skills require the gymnast to use the correct body position for safe completion.
Arm Positions. Proper carriage of the arms is also critical for rhythmic gymnastics. For beginners, the arms may be held in either first or second position or with the hands on the hips.
Beginner Rope Technique
What to Use. Any type of rope which does not have handles may be sued for rhythmic gymnastics. The most suitable materials are hemp or a pliable synthetic fiber. Other materials may be too light or flimsy to hold a good shape during the swinging or circling movements. To find the appropriate length of rope for the student, have her stand in the middle of the rope and pull the ends up one each side of the body. The ends of the rope should be knotted and should reach approximately to the armpits. If you are cutting the rope to achieve the proper length, you may cover the ends with tape to avoid fraying.
Skill Groups. You will find the following 5 skill groups presented in this curriculum:
Swings (1-handed, 2-handed)
Circles (1-handed, 2-handed)
Forward jumps/skips
Releases
Exchanges
Grip. Throughout the rope curriculum, proper grip of the rope should be stressed. The rope is held lightly with the thumb and index finger wrapped around the rope just below the knots. Gripping the rope too tightly will affect the pattern of the rope and cause the gymnast to perform skills out of the correct plane.
Notes:
When performing one-handed skills with the rope, the free arm should be placed on the hip or extended to the side at all times.
Avoid hitting or brushing the rope against the floor when performing rope skills.
Jumping rope is a terrific conditioning activity. Try placing your rope activity either and the beginning of class for a good aerobic warm-up or at the end of class for a strong conditioning exercise.
Beginner Hoop Technique
What to Use. Any ordinary plastic “hula hoop” can be modified to suit the rhythmic gymnastics class. A minimum weight of 300 grams can be achieved by wrapping the hoop with plastic or electrical tape. The “noisemakers” inside the hoop can easily be removed by removing the staples at the joint, pouring out the contents, and reassembling the hoop. Of course, official hoops for rhythmic gymnastics are available if you prefer. To find the appropriate size hoop, stand the hoop on end and measure the top of the hoop approximately to the hip bone.
Skill Groups. You will find the following 6 skill groups within this curriculum:
Swings
Circles
Exchanges
Rolls
Passing through the hoop
Spins
Notes:
When performing one-handed skills with the rope, the free arm should be placed on the hip or extended to the side at all times. Hoop offers much room for creativity because the range of movement is uniquely diverse. Everyone loves to do the “hula hoop”, but look for the excitement as your students discover the endless variety of skills which can be performed with the hoop.
Beginner Ball Technique
What to Use. Balls designed specifically for rhythmic gymnastics are inexpensive and come in many different sizes and colors. Ordering an assortment of balls from a rhythmic supplier is a great investment for your program. The smallest sizes available (approximately 16cm diameter) are perfect for small hands. Larger sizes should be used to fit growing hands. The largest regulation size is 20cm diameter. Balls larger than this should not be used. If you currently have other sport balls in your gym, these can be used. Make sure they are not too light (a 350-gram minimum is a good guideline) and that they are not too “bouncy.” To check for proper inflation, press on the ball with the heel of your hand. If the ball does not give with the pressure, deflate it slightly.
Skill groups. The following 6 skill groups are included in this curriculum:
Swings
Exchanges
Rolls (on the ground, on the body)
Bounces
Rotations
Tosses and Catches
Grip. Throughout the ball curriculum reference is made to “correct grip.” Mastering the correct grip is critical to learning proper ball technique. Below are the rules for holding the ball:
Ball rests on the palm of the hand
Fingers are relaxed, not squeezed together, and follow the shape of the ball
Ball is not gripped with the thumb or any other part of the hand
Ball does not rest against the wrist or the forearm
Notes:
Ball lends itself well to group activities because it is easily exchanged with a partner or in a group setting. Be creative with your class organization and try using different set-ups to encourage cooperation among your students.
Beginner Ribbon Technique
What to Use. Ribbons are the most recognized piece of rhythmic apparatus and usually the first thing your students will want to “play” with. Ribbons that are too long for the student, however, can quickly cause frustration when it constantly becomes knotted or wrapped around the struggling gymnast. Whether you make your own ribbons or buy them from your equipment supplier, be sure they are long enough to seethe patterns being created, yet short enough for your smallest participant to manipulate. Be sure to sew the end of the ribbons after they are cut to avoid fraying. To make your own ribbons, use a medium weight satin or satin/polyester blend ribbon approximately 5cm wide. The stick can be made from dowels or the ends of fishing rods 50-60cm long. Shorter sticks may be used for preschoolers. Ribbons should be attached with a fishing swivel to a ring of some type (i.e. eyelet screw) at the end of the stick.
Skill Groups. The following 4 skill groups are used in this curriculum:
Swings
Large Circles
Snakes
Exchanges
Grip. To show correct patterns with the ribbon, it is necessary to first master the correct grip of the ribbon stick. Below are the rules for holding the ribbon stick:
Stick is held between the thumb and middle finger
Index finger points down the stick, fourth and fifth fingers wrap lightly around the stick
End of the stick should be hidden in the palm of the hand
Notes:
The flowing movements of the ribbon can deceive observers into thinking that the ribbon is easy to manipulate. On the contrary, ribbon requires a good amount of arm strength to properly create the beautiful patters. Encourage your students to really “work” the ribbon so the whole length can be involved.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Margarita Mamun (RUS). During her performances, this athlete treated rhythmic gymnastics as an art form. Certainly, in her four performances, the focus she has placed on feelings and imagery has been intended to persuade viewers that it is an art form. Not only has she shown her love for the sport, but she has also shown her option to convey off a multitude of colors to her programs. Her performances were brilliantly conveyed across a variety of mediums, including music, leotards, and images. As observed, she seemed to be very relaxed and calm during her performances, causing her to release some sort of fantasy effect as it went on. Hence, the creativity was depicted through it. Personally, I loved her ribbon program. The fanciness and elegance in it were perfectly portrayed. The way she executed the swings and large circles techniques was honestly very satisfying to see, it was exceptional. Furthermore, she has also shown her unique colors on her other three programs. Above all, has showed off the technical and tactical skills she had been patiently honing ever since throughout her performances, hence, it is evident how much she deserved her gold place.
Tumblr media
Yana Kudryavtseva (RUS). Kudryavtseva is noted for her precise technique and light touch. She has learned unusual skills such as ball spin on the tip of the finger, apparatus grab turning to roll, ball/hoop series, and ribbon serpentine in clubs with her high, asymmetric, challenging throws. As seen, she has used dive jump tactics with asymmetric club movements: after the jump, a high bounce of the club from the floor and passing to the roll to catch this club. As a result, the other club and I formed a wide circle.
Tumblr media
Ganna Rizatdinova (UKR). She's popular for her incredible pivots, technique, and body complexity. She has shown tremendous control and elegance during her programs – a genuinely world-class exhibition of rhythmic gymnastics movements. As can be said, she has used exchanges of gestures that are very difficult to detect. It's also interesting to watch as she easily moved the ball from one side to the other around her waist, knees, or other parts of her body.
Tumblr media
Son Yeon-jae (KOR). Her performances were clearly difficult to conduct. It was all quite fragmentary, and she walked in such a way when dealing on her apparatus. She has often conducted the exercises to lyrical music, which suited the nuances of working with this apparatus well. Furthermore, in her ball program, the ball would perfectly slide over her body. The more dynamic or even joyful the soundtrack, the more she needed to flow gracefully with it.
Tumblr media
Melitina Staniouta (BLR). She has mixed elite talent with complete control of the tricky apparatus, the ball. Her programs were difficult to perform due to the fact that her choreography often included bounces, tosses, catches, and rolls. She has, though, done it flawlessly. Moreover, it's lovely to see how she stood with ease, arched backwards on the cement, and her arm extended up, holding a blue ball in her ball program.
Tumblr media
Katsiaryna Halkina (BLR). Her exercises are clearly good. There were no instances when her programs were turned upside down. Her clubs and hoop were particularly appealing to me. It has highlighted her distinct color and how she distinguishes from the other contestants. Both programs demonstrated how at ease and interesting she is as an athlete. As seen, she used loops to execute around her arm, stomach, spine, ankles, and feet. As a result, I appreciate how she played with throws and captures, such as the two-time.
Tumblr media
Neviana Vladinova (BUL). Obviously, any change she made put a little strain on her body, but she didn't make it clear. Throughout her programs, she has developed perfect body formations. All of her dance variations and transitions from one aspect to another – I knew, thought, and fulfilled them with my inner meaning. She incorporated other technical elements in her hoop performance, such as twists, in which she perfectly rotates the hoop on the floor and dances through it, as well as moving through the hoop.
Tumblr media
Carolina Rodríguez (ESP). It was simple for her to perform over the virtuosity, and this was perhaps her strength attribute. Emotions are the driving force behind her programs; they are, in fact, her engine. It was heartbreaking to watch. Her opinions and emotions on her shows are so raw and genuine that it seems like it's more than just a sport.
Tumblr media
Marina Durunda (AZE). She has used the most complex movements through all types of equipment. In her ribbon routines, she chucked gracefully the ribbon handle into the air and execute a sequence of turns and steps before capturing it in one smooth motion and continuing the exercise. It was truly interesting to see.
Tumblr media
Kseniya Moustafaeva (FRA). Her clubs' performance is very fast and slick, and she has shown her stamina and precision by using her hands and wrists. She used key moves such as loops (when the clubs swing in the same direction) and mills (when the clubs swing in opposite directions), as noted. Furthermore, it's satisfying to see her do throws as if they were nothing when, in fact, they take the most expertise.
Rules of the Sport
Tumblr media
1.1 General Rules
Only female athletes compete in Levels 1–4. Levels A, B, C, and Group are mixed gender.
Athletes must compete on the same level in all chosen individual events. (Either A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 or 4.)
Athletes may specialize by competing in one or more events at their chosen level. Gymnasts who do all four events at a level are considered All-Around. (i.e., Specialist: Level I Hoop and Ball; All-Around: Level I Rope, Hoop, Ball, and Ribbon)
A gymnast may perform in one or two group routines in addition to individual routines, or perform just in group routines (no individual).
The video of the compulsory routines is the official version. If a difference exists between the video and the written text, the video must be followed. For group routines, the video is the only version of the choreography.
Compulsory routines may be reversed in their entirety (mirror image).
Olympic order for rhythmic gymnastics is rope, hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon.
1.2 Unified Sports Rhythmic Gymnastics Events
All rules and regulations apply equally to athletes and partners.
Unified competition is allowed in both Pairs and Group events.
In Unified Pairs events, the athlete and unified partner can either perform together as a duet or separately. One panel of judges will evaluate the athlete’s routine and one panel will evaluate the unified partner’s routine.
The scores are added together for a unified team score.
In the Group events, there must be an equal number of athletes and partners in each group.
1.3 Modifications
Visually Impaired Athletes – Coaches must notify the meet director and judges of the athlete’s visual impairment before the competition and prior to each routine. In order to aid the athletes, the following types of assistance are permissible for all levels of competition without deduction:
Audible cues, such as clapping, may be used in all routines.
Music may be played at any close point outside of the mat, or the coach may carry the music source around the perimeter of the mat.
Hearing Impaired Athletes – Coaches must notify the meet director and judges of the athlete’s hearing impairment before the competition and prior to each routine.
The athlete may receive a visual aid from the coach to begin her routine as the music starts.
1.4 Awarding of Medals
Medals (or ribbons) are awarded for each event and for All-Around.

Full Women's Figure Skating Short Program | PyeongChang 2018 (Sport Performance Analysis)
Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
A total of 30 skaters qualified for the contest, with each country permitted a limit of three entries. During the 2017 World Figure Skating Championships, 24 quotas were awarded, and the remaining six were awarded at the 2017 CS Nebelhorn Trophy. The entry of each country's teams was determined by each country, and athletes who won the quota were not guaranteed to participate. This was 20.00 for the short program and 36.00 for the free skate. In the end, Alina Zagitova from Russia won the gold with 82.92 total segment score, followed by Evgenia Medvedeva who won the silver with 81.61 total segment score, and Kaetlyn Osmond from Canada who won the bronze with 78.87 total segment score.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the ladies' single figure skating competition of the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Gangneung Ice Arena in Gangneung, South Korea. Figure Skating Rinks have a total area of 18,707 ft2 (1738 m2), with an average length of 196.85' (60 m) and a width of 98.43' (30 m). Hence, its corners have a circumference of 27.89'. (8.5 m).
Equipment
Tumblr media
Ice skates with good fit -  a boot with a blade attached to the bottom, used for skating on ice.
Appropriate socks -  a garment for the foot and lower part of the leg, typically knitted from wool, cotton, or nylon.
Ice skating bag -  could come in the form of laps of hard skating around the rink for prolonged periods or hard skating from end-to-end or side-to-side.
Skate guards -  covers used in ice hockey and figure skating that fit over ice skate blades.
Absorbent cloth or towel -  when a liquid, such as water, comes into contact with a material with tiny holes in, such as paper or a sponge, the liquid is drawn into the tiny holes.
Skate soakers -  when packed in a bag, your skates should not be left unprotected and should not be protected by the guards as they will keep moisture and rust will appear.
Appropriate clothing - if you are not a leisure skater but being coached, your coach will need to see your lines and how your knees are bending. Therefore, you should not be wearing large clothes.
Gloves -  a covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb.
Water bottle -  is a container that is used to hold water, liquids or other beverages for consumption.
Tissues -  tissue paper.

Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Alina Zagitova (Russia). Her trademark triple lutz-triple loop variation, as well as other triple loop combinations like the triple flip-triple loop, are her specialties. As observed, she also does other combinations including the triple lutz-triple toe, double axel-triple toe, and triple flip-double toe-double loop. She also uses the "Rippon" version, in which she jumps with both arms above her back. Indeed, with her exceptional technical and tactical skills, she managed to get to the top of the competition, earning the triumph for herself and her homeland.
Tumblr media
Evgenia Medvedeva (Russia). From what I've observed, most all of her leaps are performed with an arm above her back, a practice popularized by Brian Boitano as part of his triple Lutz jump. She does all jump variations that result in a triple toe loop. Furthermore, she has also practiced triple-triple-triple and triple-triple-triple-triple-triple jump combinations. She also began using the triple loop jump at the end of a variation. At the end of her performance, she often does a cross grab I-position spiral into the rink's middle.
Tumblr media
Kaetlyn Osmond (Canada). Osmond spins and jumps in a clockwise direction. As observed, she has utilized efficiently the euler jump wherein she takes off from one skate's back outside edge and falls on the opposing skate's foot and edge. Hence, she achieved it effortlessly before the third jump in a three-jump mix to get a skater on the right edge so they can do a Salchow jump or a flip jump. Furthermore, the fact that it only possible to do it in one hop, yet she has done it very well is amazing.
Tumblr media
Satoko Miyahara (Japan). Her technique could cause discussion, but I watched every skater in the ladies' short program in slow motion, and hers were no less spectacular than the others. Her power is her ability to bring together a curriculum like an artwork; not only jumps, but spins and moves all fall together as one unified power.
Tumblr media
Kaori Sakamoto (Japan). The V reflects the absence of a seat. I just slowed it down, and she didn't even get two revs after the flying transition. Since it was a hybrid spin, she did not get a zero. As long as you have two simple positions, you can also get some credit with a mix spin. She always had a camel and an upright, so the V was simply attached. When she popped the flip, I yelled in fear. She was just one triple flip away from earning a world silver medal. I just can't get enough of her skating because it's so light and strong.
Tumblr media
Carolina Kostner (Italy). Kostner flips and hops counterclockwise. She's done triple-triple combos. Her fast speed over the ice is very fascinating to watch. I must say that her jumps are top favorite among the others.   With a pure toe pick (no blade assistance or hammering), deep edges on both the flip and the Lutz, no unnecessary PR or muscling, no chronic UR, excellent air location, steady flow, and massive ice coverage. Indeed, her jumps are simply amazing.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle Daleman (Canada). She has often utilized edge jumps such as salchows wherein as she pushing on the inside edge of their biggest foot, she leaps into the air. She, then, does a half-revolution in mid-air before landing effortlessly on the outside edge of her weakened foot and attempting to skate around the ice. Moreover, I also noticed how she used toe loops where she hops counter-clockwise while doing a toe loop. Hence, she easily glides backwards around the ice rink before jumping into the air with the outer edge of her back skate and the toe-pick of her front skate. She flips half a revolution in mid-air before landing on the outer edge of her back skate once more. Nonetheless, she was just overall graceful.
Tumblr media
Choi Da-bin (South Korea). Her flips where she pushes on the inside edge of her back foot and the toe-pick of her front skate to float backwards around the ice rink before jumping into the air, is just amazing. She, then, turns in mid-air for a full revolution before settling effortlessly on the ice and proceeding to skate. Indeed, she’s not just strong, but she’s also a very talented and skillful young woman.
Tumblr media
Mirai Nagasu (United States). This competitor is a powerful spinner who got a perfect +3.00 execution grade for her layback spin. As seen, she often does the Biellmann spin with her hands on the boot of her skate rather than the blade. She has also used a triple Axel jump in her routine, landing two completely inverted triple Axel jumps. Not to mention the fact that became the first woman in the United States to perform a triple Axel in an Olympic competition.
Tumblr media
Karen Chen (United States). She’s one of the figure skaters who utilized efficiently the toe jump, lutz, where she jumps from the outer edge of her back foot rather than the inside edge. When launching into a complete, mid-air revolution from the outside edge of the skate, staying upright is incredibly challenging. It is a known fact that learning the lutz involves hours of hard labor, suffering, and frustration. Indeed, she made it really easy to see rather than hard.
Tumblr media
Bradie Tennell (United States). Her consistency, jumping ability, resiliency, and mental resilience were well-known. Moreover, her jumping and spin abilities are just out of this world. Her consistency and technical expertise have been her greatest asset, however, she somehow lacked the expressiveness that distinguishes great skaters from mediocre ones.
Tumblr media
Maria Sotskova (Russia). She used a spiral jump, which involves taking off from the outside edge of her best foot and spinning a full revolution in the air. She then lands backwards on the same foot and then starts skating around the ice or prepares to spin again.
Tumblr media
Nicole Rajičová (Slovakia). Her grace, leaps, strength, and beauty are unparalleled, and it was a joy to watch her skate perfect programs everywhere she competed. Moreover, she has exceptional discipline, faith, and strength on the ice. Above all, triple axel is impressive and inspirational.
Tumblr media
Nicole Schott (Germany). Her skating spins were amazing to look at. She effortlessly moves her body in mid-air, spinning moves generally take place on the ice rink surface itself. When entering into a spin, she efficiently rotates on the ball of her foot, allowing for the greatest possible flexibility.
Tumblr media
Elizabet Tursynbayeva (Kazakhstan). She has successfully landed a quadruple salchow in her performance. Hence, the fact that she is the first female skater to land a quadruple jump in senior competition is mind-blowing. She has also utilized the upright spin where she positions her body in a straight, upwardly position with one or both of her feet remaining on the ice throughout the maneuver.
Tumblr media
Kailani Craine (Australia). She's a ball of energy on the ice in her little dress and routine, and it's a joy to experience her. She seems to be floating on the ice. Her skating and jumps tend to be effortless and light. She still seems to be concentrated, and I respect how she conducts her programs in any case.
Tumblr media
Isadora Williams (Brazil). She has utilized all the five triple jumps, but her salchow seems to standout the most for me. Pushing on the inside edge of her biggest foot, she propels herself into the air. She lands effortlessly onto the outside edge of their weakened foot after executing a half-revolution in mid-air, before proceeding to skate around the ice.
Tumblr media
Emmi Peltonen (Finland). With massive leaps worthy of being quads, she is severely underestimated. Furthermore, she has the ambition and physical ability to continue moving the field in terms of technology, and you can also see her beginning to understand and focus on artistry.
Tumblr media
Alexia Paganini (Switzerland). Her perseverance and discipline in the match are incredible. Among all, she has outstanding jumping technique. Her skating has a lovely delicateness to it, which her latest short program aptly demonstrates, and when the jumps are there, they're fantastic. In terms of artistry, she's one-of-a-kind.
Tumblr media
Loena Hendrickx (Belgium). Her skating is strong and vibrant. She gains strength for her axels before springing forward into the air from the outer edge of their highest foot. She spins one and a half revolutions in mid-air before landing on their weaker foot's outer edge. This is a complex move without the assistance of a toe-pick to help her catapult herself.
Tumblr media
Kim Ha-nul (South Korea). Despite being so young, this figure skater has managed to showcase well her absolute talent and skills in her performance. She also used camel spin, in which she forms a ‘T' with her body. Skating is done on her stronger knee, while the other is bent sideways, right behind the skater's head. During this spin, she leans her neck forward, bringing her head in line with the straightened rear leg.
Tumblr media
Maé-Bérénice Méité (France). Her technique is fantastic and amazing, particularly considering her build and lean, gorgeous body. Through her moves, she knows how to slay it on the rink. She glides over the ice with ease. Her transfer checks are also incredible. Finally, her artistry is so sweet and elegant, not ostentatious or garish, just delicate.
Tumblr media
Ivett Tóth (Hungary). I find her programs unusual because most people prefer classic music over other genres; however, she has shown that she can skate to classic, punk, and pop music. Her leg extensions and choreography, as well as her models, are all fun to watch.
Tumblr media
Li Xiangning (China). She's done flips where she hops from the back inside tip, using the toe pick to vault the skater into the air — it's not a back flip, despite the name. She's done flips where she hops from the back inside tip, using the toe pick to vault the skater into the air — it's not a back flip, despite the name. She has even performed an axel, which allows her to leap into the air while looking forward. As a result, an additional half revolution is needed, resulting in a backwards landing.
Tumblr media
Larkyn Austman (Canada). She also used grab foot, which entails a spin or spiral stance with one or both hands holding the free leg. The Biellmann is the most well-known catch-foot location. She has also used cantilever, which includes bending the elbows and bending the back upwards, parallel to the ice. The aspect may be done with one's hands on the ice or with one's arms out in the air.
Tumblr media
Diāna Ņikitina (Latvia). Her spins are excellent. She could only spin in one direction, clockwise or counter-clockwise. When turning, she tends to choose a counter-clockwise rotation. Her flying spins, which can move from a forward to a back spin and can also be executed as part of a spin series, are also remarkable.
Tumblr media
Giada Russo (Italy). I was astounded by the calm, still energy she brings to the ice; you could hear a pin drop during that performance. It appears that she wants to work on her technical material. However, she is unlikely to give up such lovely transitions in order to carry out more challenging leaps.
Tumblr media
Anita Östlund (Sweden). She has utilized the upright spin where her body is positioned in a straight, upward stance, with one or both of her feet staying on the ice during the maneuver. As a result, she was impressive to watch as she enters a spin and rotates on the heel of her foot, making for maximum stability.
Tumblr media
Anna Khnychenkova (Ukraine). She has utilized she skates on one leg only, while sticking the other out in front of them. When turning, she bends her skate leg as far as it can go, practically sitting as low as she can without falling over. She was an outstanding performer in general.
Tumblr media
Aiza Mambekova (Kazakhstan). First of all, I really adore her costume, it perfectly fits her program. She has stunning hands and more musicality than other skaters who get twice her points, not to mention outstanding costumes. However, I am hopeful that she will be able to add more triple jumps to her arsenal and make a significant impact in the coming quadrennium.
Rules of the Sport
Tumblr media
Players & Equipment
Figure skating is a sport in which both men and women compete, and the only equipment needed is a pair of specially designed skates known as "Figure Skates."
Figure Skates
Figure Skates are specially designed skating shoes with thick steel blades at the base and jagged grooves at the front known as “toe picks” – which assist athletes with their footwork on the ice, as well as landing and spinning. The specific style of toe picks can vary.
The key blades are usually about 4 millimeters wide, although this varies depending on the athlete's foot style. They also have a small bend on one side to help with ice turns.
Figure skaters will often want to skate on the outer tips of their wheels. In order to accommodate step-work rather than skipping, ice dancers normally have slightly narrower blades on the base of their shoes, with a slightly different shape.
Costumes
In order to perform on a professional level, all men and women must wear special costumes. Men are expected to wear pants, while women must wear skirts and tights, trousers, or neon spandex.
Scoring
Figure skaters are judged by a jury of judges who use the ISU Judging System to rate them (usually nine judges including a technical inspector, and also a referee). This system works by giving varying numbers of points to competitors with different kinds of movements, as well as how quickly and successfully they are performed. A Grade of Execution (GoE) is measured, followed by a Scale of Success (SOP). A Grade of Execution (GoE) is measured, and this grade is then converted into an overall mark using a Scale of Value Table.
Ability, footwork, performance, perception, overall execution, choreography, and timing are the key factors scored during a normal Figure Skating performance. The more complicated maneuvers are often awarded the highest scores if they are done correctly. For example, the more rotations in a leap, the higher the score.
Winning
The athlete or team with the highest total score wins a Figure Skating competition.
Figure Skating Rules
Figure skaters must make their results interesting. According to the Zayak Rule, no participant can try triple or quadruple jumps more than twice.
If participants may not follow the rules and regulations for music and costumes, judges can penalize them or disqualify them entirely. Certain forms of music are forbidden, and costumes must be free of "excessive decoration" or be too revealing.
Time penalties will also result in athletes being disqualified.
Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
Officials are well regarded by the Association. They are volunteers who offer of their time, skills, and experience to help our athletes improve. Officials of figure skating are classified into several categories: evaluators, technical controllers, technical experts, judges, referees, and data technicians, each with their own duties.
Evaluators. They examine skaters at evaluation days organized by Skate Canada member clubs on a regular basis so that their skaters can be evaluated and progress to the next stage or examination. They are in charge of coordinating and evaluating the evaluations that have been delegated to them. They control the on-ice operations as an assessor and referee during the evaluation session. Candidates studying to become evaluators will be taught how to run appraisal days, stressing the value of making choices in the skater's best interests. The following thresholds must be evaluated by evaluators:
STAR 6 – Gold Free Skate Assessments
STAR 6 – Diamond Dance Assessments
STAR 6 – Gold Skills Assessments
STAR 7 – Gold Artistic Assessments
Technical Specialists and Technical Controllers. Former competitors, coaches, judges and referees are hired as technical specialists and technical controllers to ensure the proper recognition of elements and their levels of difficulty when skaters and teams attempt them in competition.
Judges. They officiate at all stages of competitions and are in charge of judging a skater's success in competition as well as assessing competitive assessments.
Referees. These are the people who oversees ice conditions, maintains that all measurement or competitiveness laws are enforced, and serves as chairman of the judges' panel and arbiter of protocol or practice conflicts. At smaller competitions, the referee usually serves as both a referee and a judge. They are also in charge of preparing notes on the judges' evaluations of their results at a particular case. The records are scrutinized as part of the official promotion procedure. At the close of a Challenge or Championships, the Referees have consultation sessions with the judges.
Data Specialists. These are the people in charge of measuring the judges' marks and tabulating the final score. The data specialists are usually located at ice level if free labeling is used at a case. They'll be in the result measurement center at other cases.

Artistic Swimming | Rio 2016 (Sport Performance Analysis)
Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
The fiery synchronized/artistic swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro were staged from 15 to 20 August at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center. Teams from Egypt, Australia, Italy, Brazil, Russian Federation, Ukraine, China, and Japan have represented their countries buoyantly. In the end, Russian Federation won the gold with 196.1439, China won the silver with 192.9841, and Japan won the bronze with 189.2056.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the scorching Synchronized swimming competitions at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center. Apparently, the Olympic pool has the dimensions of 50 meters long, 25 meters wide, and a minimum of 2 meters deep. Hence, it consists of 2,500,000 liters or 2.5 megaliters of water.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Swimming accessories – these are items that can be used while swimming to aid in learning how to swim in specific ways. They're used to improve your swimming skills and reinforce specific body parts. Hence, these may include pace clocks, kickboards, pull buoys, paddles, fins, snorkels, and tempo trainers.
2. Arm Floaties – these are two-arm floatation devices that are typically worn by children and/or beginner swimmers for safety and to help them get used to being in the water.
3. Ear Plugs – small silicone earplugs to keep water out of your ear canal are known as swim plugs. It's critical to remember that foam ear plugs should never be used in place of genuine swim plugs.
4. Fins – are used by many competitive swimmers and those who want to develop their technique to increase their speed through the water while also improving their stance and maintaining their hips high in the water.
5. Kickboards – allow you to target your legs, isolating them so you can practice your kick stroke, improve your balance, or work on your leg strength.
6. Lap Counter – was created to assist swimmers keep track of their laps while in the water, allowing them to concentrate solely on their pace or stroke count.
7. Life Jacket – will keep you safe from waves and fast currents, as well as keep you safe if you get tired.
8. Mesh Bag – a mesh bag's main advantage is that it brings all of your swim gear together. This makes it much easier to bring your swim gear around, and it also prevents it from being mixed up (and potentially lost or stolen) with that of your teammates or other swimmers.
9. Noodle – is a solid foam cylinder that can be used as a float, a pool toy, or even water aerobics equipment. The most common swimming noodle is three inches thick and four feet long, and is made of polyethylene foam.
10. Nose Clip – is a device used to keep people's nostrils closed during aquatic activities to discourage water from entering or air from escaping.
11. Pace Clock – if you're the first swimmer in the lane and you start swimming "on the top" (when the second hand reaches zero), you immediately look at the clock to see how many seconds have passed.
12. Pool Float – are used for strength training where muscles push down against buoyancy.
13. Pool – an artificial pool for swimming in.
14. Swimming Shirts – are new to the consumer market, so they're gaining notoriety. They're usually loose-fitting and worn casually.
15. Swimming Cap – a tight elastic cap worn in the water to improve speed in competition swimming or to keep hair dry.
16. Swimming Goggles – while swimming, to protect the eyes from material in the water. Because of the pollen, you should wear a pair of swimming goggles.
17. Swimming Paddles – hand paddle is a device worn by swimmers during training. It consists of a plastic plate worn over the swimmer's palm and attached over the back of the swimmer's hand with elastic cords.
18. Swimming Snorkels – when the wearer's head is face down in the water with the lips and nose submerged, the device is used to breathe air from above the surface.
19. Tempo Trainer – is an electronic training device that emits an audible beep to assist you in developing a steady pace and tempo.
20. Towel – a rectangular absorbent cloth (or piece of paper) for wiping or drying.
21. Bathing Suit – is a piece of clothing that is worn for swimming, especially by women and girls.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Sculls. These are hand movements that push the body forward and are required for synchronized swimming. Support, standard, torpedo, split-arm, barrel, and paddle sculls are some of the most widely used sculls. The most common scull is the support scull, which consists of two movements that are repeated. Hold your forearms at 90-degree angles and your upper arms against your body. Then you move your forearms back and forth to build up enough water pressure to keep your legs above the water's surface.
Eggbeater. This movement is similar to how a manual eggbeater works, with one leg moving clockwise and the other leg rotating anti-clockwise. This kick is used by synchronized swimmers because it frees up their hands to execute strokes. Swimming is a stable and effective way for swimmers to achieve the required height to execute moves above the water because of the kick's opposite motion.
Positions. There are hundreds of positions that can be used to create infinite combinations.
Crane Position. Hold your torso vertically with one leg vertically above the water's surface and the other leg parallel to the water's surface in a 90-degree angle or "L" shape.
Ballet Leg Double Position. Draw your knees towards your chest while keeping your shins parallel to the water surface while laying flat on the water surface. To perform a Surface Ballet Leg Double, straighten your legs above the water's surface.
Side Fishtail Position. This is a comparable stance to that of the crane. One leg stays vertical while the other is stretched to the side parallel to the water, forming a "Y" shape.
Knight Position. The torso is vertically carried, with the head in line with the hips and pointing to the pool's bottom. To achieve a vertical line perpendicular to the surface, one leg is lowered. Fifthly, is the Flamingo Position. The bottom leg is shoved into the chest, and the shin of the bottom leg touches the knee of the vertical leg, similar to the ballet leg stance.
Split Position. One leg is pulled forward along the surface and the other leg is extended back along the surface with the body vertical.
Lifts. These are underwater formations that remain in place as swimmers push themselves towards the surface, adding more components such as acrobatics.
The Flyer. They're quick and adaptable, and they're usually the team's smallest member. Because they must perform difficult moves while on top of the formation, it is better if they have a gymnastics background.
The Base. As they make up the structure of the formation, they should be small in size but have decent leg strength and a solid core.
The Pushers. Because they need the strength to propel the formation to the water's surface, they are the greater and stronger swimmers.
The Platform Lift. Underwater, the base lays out in a back lay out stance, lying on their backs to form a platform of interconnected bodies. When the lift hits the surface, the Flyer assumes a squatting stance and stands up. The eggbeater kicks are used by the surviving teammates to keep the platform and flyer afloat.
The Stack Lift. Starts with the base squatting while underwater, backed by the pushers, and is considered an upgraded version of the Platform. The flyer then takes a position on the base's shoulders. The base and pushers gradually extend their limbs, lifting the flyer. This lift is sometimes supplemented with a rotating descent.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Egypt. This synchronized swimming team performs their free routine to a remix of songs from the "Lion King." The ages of the girls in this team range from 17-20 years old which is very fascinating. They are young yet very talented. The angling and their sculling are truly astonishing to see. Although they were great, there were sometimes that their synchronization messes up just a little bit. Their execution is 23.5000, artistic impression is 31.4667, difficulty is 23.6000, with 0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 76.9838, and free routine is 78.5667, with a total of 155.5505.
Tumblr media
Australia. The drawbacks that this team has utilized were exceptional. Their bodies were very light underneath the water. Their movements highly include animal mannerism such as crocodiles. Just like the Egypt team, their synchronization and timing also seemed off just a little bit at some point in their performance. Personally, I really loved their ending pose. Their execution is 22.6000, artistic impression is 30.1333, difficulty is 22.7000, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 74.0067, and free routine is 75.4333, with a total of 149.5000.
Tumblr media
Italy. I adore the opening of this team because it seemed witty and cool, as well as their music choice. Their interpretation of the seasons was exceptional. Moreover, their balance and strength were tremendous as they lift their teammate to the air. The changes in their pattern were also good to look at. Above all, their synchronization and timing were top-tier. The lift and spin they did were also fantastic and flawless, as well as the quick changes of their formation. Their execution is 27.500, artistic impression is 37.0667, difficulty is 27.7000, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 91.1142, and free routine is 92.2667, with a total of 183.3809.
Tumblr media
Brazil. This team had the theme of carnival. The opening spin was very brilliant, and their energy was really good. The balance and speed that this team had were amazing. Like Italy, the interpretation of their theme was really good and they executed it well. The synchronization and timing were also exceptional and fascinating to see. Personally, I love their free routine. Throughout their performance, they’ve shown their exceptional spirit and energy. Their execution is 26.100, artistic impression is 34.800, difficulty is 26.300, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 84.7985, and free routine is 87.2000, with a total of 171.9985.
Tumblr media
Russian Federation. First of all, I love the outfits of this team, as well as their theme choice which is angels. The high opening lift on the air was fascinating. Since the very start, they’ve showcased how skilled and amazing they are as artistic swimmers. It was an incredible opening, indeed. The power that this team holds is top-tier that it is somehow scary for me as an audience. Even the heights of their legs were compatible and equal as they place it on the air, as well as their sculling. It was evident that their choreography and movements were authentic and originally theirs. Above all, their synchronization and timing were the best. Hence, their routine was incredible. They deserved their gold place, indeed. Their execution is 20.700, artistic impression is 30.7333, difficulty is 29.700, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 97.0106, and free routine is 99.1333, with a total of 196.1439.
Tumblr media
Ukraine. The theme of this team was illusionism and magic. Their originality for their choreography and routine were also good. The lift that they did at the first part was very risky but they executed it well. The spacing they had between each other is also amazing, and their steadiness on the water. The angles and patterns of their legs were consistent. Above all, their flexibility was also amazing. The synchronization and timing were also exceptional. Their execution is 28.2000, artistic impression is 38.2667, difficulty is 28.7000, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 93.4413, and free routine is 95.1667, with a total of 188.6080.
Tumblr media
China. This team had the theme of the dragon. The power they also hold is top-tier. From the very start, they successfully showcased their personality, strength, and power. Their facial expression was also amazing. Although there was only a short time for them to change movements and patterns, they’ve done it without even getting late and breathlessly. The overall performance was very exceptional and strong. The synchronization and timing were very well executed, and the leg raises. Their execution is 29.100, artistic impression is 30.667, difficulty is 29.000, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 95.6174, and free routine is 97.3667, with a total of 192.9841.
Tumblr media
Japan. This final team had the theme of sun. Their opening was really good, also their flip at the start. From the start, they’ve given off an energetic spirit and power. The facial expressions, synchronization, flips were just elegant. The routines and choreography were very enchanting to watch, it perfectly fits with the music. They’re also executed and interpreted their theme perfectly. They were nervous, but they have really done well, and very well deserved their bronze place. Their execution is 28.500, artistic impression is 38.133, difficulty is 28.800, with 0.0 penalty. Furthermore, their technical routine is 93.7723, and free routine is 95.4333, with a total of 189.2056.
Rules of the Game
Tumblr media
1. There is no touching the bottom. One of the things that adds to the spectacle is that artistic swimmers are not permitted to touch the pool's bottom at any point during their routines.
2. There will be no bling. Although presentation is an important aspect of artistic swimming, there are some limitations on what swimmers can wear. Artistic swimmers, for example, are not allowed to wear jewelry, theatrical make-up, or improper costumes.
3. There are no goggles on. Goggles are another constraint during artistic swimming routines. Swimmers competing in figure competitions, on the other hand, are allowed to wear them.
4. What does it mean to work in a group? Team Teams usually have eight swimmers, but a team may have as few as four. Teams lose points for each swimmer who is not part of the full complement, as it is easier to synchronize a routine with fewer participants.
5. Observe the schedule. Routines will range in length from two and a half to five minutes, depending on whether they are done alone or in a group. Swimmers, on the other hand, are penalized if they take 15 seconds less or more than the time limit.
6. Swimmers perform two routines for the judges in most senior competitions, one technical and one free.
7. Predetermined components must be performed in a particular order as part of the technical routine. The free routine has no restrictions, allowing the swimmers to be as innovative as they like with their movements and choreography.
8. The routines are played in front of a panel of judges who score the performances according to a set of strict rules.
9. In addition to technical and free routines, junior swimmers compete in 'figures' competitions, in which they execute pre-determined movements for the judges. There is no music, and the individual's ability to perform different synchro moves is all that matters.
Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
Referee. An Artistic Swimming referee's job is to keep an artistic swimming competition under control. The referee ensures that all facets of the competition run smoothly and in accordance with FINA rules.
Judging Level 1 and Level 2. The Judging 1 and 2 courses will teach you skills like the basics of figure elements, transitions, and judging complexity inside a figure through class conversation, video review, and swimmer demonstrations. Routine assessment also covers things like routine elements, marking routines, specific and general manuals, recording routines, and professional vs. creative judgment. Ethics, refereeing, and judging tasks and rules are among the other groups. You apprentice on deck at competitions after completing the course (scores are not revealed) and work for complete qualification. Interested Level 2 applicants will apply and will be reviewed by the Officials Chair before being completely admitted into the course. Once you've completed your preparation, you'll be able to assess it.\
Judging Level 1. At Regional and/or Provincial Events, judge a minimum of three full Figure Events and eight (Preliminary/Final) Routine Events. Candidates must receive a Satisfactory or better ranking in Figures and a 60 percent overall in Routines to receive certification. Refereeing – Assists in three events and collaborates with other referees to perform off-deck tasks. Unless on committees for competition, practice judging is at your own expense.
Judging Level 2. At Provincial Trials and/or Provincial Championships, practice judging a minimum of three full Figure Events and eight (Preliminary/Final) Routine Events. Certification – Candidates must earn a Satisfactory or better in Figures and a 65 percent overall in Routines, with the bulk of Routine Events scoring 60 percent or above. Refereeing – Assists in three competition events.
Judging Level 3. Figures (satisfactory or better), Schedules, etc (65 percent overall with the majority of Events being 60 percent or better).

Furthermore, its net has dimensions of 3ft / 0.9m high in the centeequr, 3.5ft / 1.1 m high at the net posts. Lastly, the center line is 4″ / 0.1 m long.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Tennis Uniform - when playing tennis, both men and women usually wear a shirt. If you wear a sleeved or sleeveless cotton blend top, you will feel cooler and more relaxed. However, some courts do not sanction sleeveless shirts, so double-check their policies first.
2. Tennis Racquet or Racket - is a bat with a long handle attached to a circular frame covered in a network of tight strings; used to strike the ball.
3. Tennis Balls - are neon yellow in organized tournaments, but they can be any color in casual play. They are wrapped in a fibrous felt that alters their aerodynamic properties, and each is adorned with a white curvilinear oval.
4. Tennis Shoes - a sports shoe with a rubber bottom and a leather or hard cotton top that is ideal for tennis sport.
5. Tennis Bag - is a bag used to transport a player's tennis rackets.
6. Net - is a mesh that divides tennis court in half.
7. Grip Tape - tennis players use this to tape the handle of their racket.
8. Arm Sleeves - it's also known as a tennis compression sleeve. This prevents the muscles from tightening and gives the arm support.
9. Ball Clips - are similar to every other clip or holder. When playing tennis, these allow a ball to be clipped onto a player's shorts or trousers.
10. Ball Hoppers - is one of the most popular methods for moving tennis balls around a tennis court. When collecting or using balls, this is normally made with wheels so that a player can wheel the hopper around the court.
11. Carts - is similar to a tennis ball hopper, except this one still has wheels and a handle, and it's made to hold tennis balls.
12. Elbow Brace - is used to relieve pain and strengthen a player's grip strength. It has two velcro straps that wrap around the elbow and add a lot of cold pressure to the inflamed area.
13. Hats - a visor is what it's classified as. This hat is made with the top of the hat left open, making it lighter than other styles of hats.
14. Knee Brace - is sometimes worn by a player who has or has had knee issues in the past. This does not mean that a player's knee is any better than it is. Furthermore, if a player takes a strange turn or falls to the court, this protects the knee from further injury.
15. Bandana/Headbands - it collects sweat and prevents it from interfering with a player's results. This is wrapped around a player's head to catch moisture to keep it out of their eyes.
16. Rosin - is a sticky substance made from the sap of fir trees that helps players strengthen their grip on their racket while still keeping their hands dry.
17. Sweat Bands - tennis players use this to wipe sweat off their forehand and wear it on their wrists.
18. Racket Grips - the tennis racket may now have a smoother, more personalized grip. This aids the tennis racket to have a smoother, more personalized grip.
19. Towels - during the course of a game, a player uses this to wipe sweat off their face and hands.
20. Visors - it's also known as a tennis hat, and it's a lot lighter than most hats.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Serve. A serve is the stroke used to begin each point in a tennis match. It is one of the most important shots in tennis since it is the only stroke over which a player has full control. A successful serve gives the player serving some control over the point's outcome. This is because the server receives the first strike and can restrict the number of strikes based on the strength, spin, and shot placement.
Groundstroke. After the ball has bounced once on the court, a groundstroke is a forehand or backhand stroke. It's one of the most basic shots in tennis, and it's usually hit from the back of the court during a baseline rally. Groundstrokes, on the other hand, can be played from any point on the court as long as the tennis ball has bounced. A groundstroke is still a groundstroke whether it is struck from the center of the court (around the service line) or even closer to the net. A volley, drive volley, or smash is when the ball is struck in the air before bouncing.
Volley. The ball is shot out of the air until it bounces on the court in a volley stroke. Both the forehand and backhand volley strokes are included in the word "volley." A volley can be played from almost any spot, but it is most commonly done when a player is closer to the net. A groundstroke or half volley is a shot in which the ball bounces until a player makes a contact with it.
Overhead Smash. An overhead smash is a tennis stroke in which the player hits the ball with his or her racquet raised above his or her head in a serve-like motion. This shot is also known as a smash or an overhead shot, and the two words are synonymous. Since this is the most common type of the shot, the word "smash" or "overhead" typically refers to the "forehand smash" or "forehand overhead." When a player is unable to move into a position to hit the more effective forehand smash, the backhand smash is used.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Monica Puig. Attaining the triumph and winning the gold surely are surely two of the indications on how skilled and well-grounded this player is in the field of the tennis sport. Throughout the whole game, she has proven her worth with the aid of her exceptional technical and tactical skills. Three of the strategies and techniques she had utilized are overhead, forehand volley, and slice. Firstly, her overhead is probably the most fascinating to see amongst the tennis players I’ve seen before. It’s amazing how comfortable she is as she stands close to the net, and eventually hits the ball over her head. This skill is one of the basic skills, but she turned it into something much more extraordinary. Secondly, her forehand volley in which has aided immensely in making her opponent vulnerable and allowed her to be able to shorten the points, taking the time away from her opponent. Although this skill may be seen as difficult for others to do, she has managed to execute it well with the help of her firm hands and exceptional reflexes. Lastly, her slice was pretty much the skill that has helped her attain triumph and the gold medal. As observed, she has utilized this skill with her own strategy. It’s astonishing to see how she perfectly swings the racket through the bottom of the ball. Moreover, this very skill has given her the ability to be able to change the pace of the game and to further add variations, the reason for her success.
Tumblr media
Angelique Kerber. Although this player has unfortunately didn’t manage to obtain the gold, it shouldn’t be the reason to see her as a less skilled and well-ground player in the sport. Having her as an opponent is certainly hard and difficult. Indeed, regardless of the hapless result, she has still proven to the world how amazing she is as a tennis player, and that she is worthy of representing her country in such competition. Three of the strategies and techniques she had utilized are return, backhand volley, and serve. Firstly, her return is very alluring to watch as an audience. It’s unbelievable how fast her reflexes are in seeing the ball’s direction and eventually hitting the ball back to the other side. This skill has given her the advantage to overcome her opponent at some time of the game. Secondly, her backhand volley is inevitably one of the highlights of her skills. This strategy has given her the capability to be dominant over her opponent at some point. It shortens the span of time that her opponent has, and has been helpful in providing her the upper hand in the game. Lastly, her serve is probably the best one I’ve seen so far. Although it’s just a basic skill, this has aided in her survival in the competition. Indeed, she has great and absolute control over it, as observed. Thus, this has also given her the advantage to give herself an edge compared to her opponent in the game.

Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
Line Umpires. At all levels of competitions, line umpires get to call the shots – literally. It might sound easy, but the best Line Umpires must be able to focus for long periods of time, work well with others, and have outstanding eyesight. They serve as an additional set of eyes and ears for the Chair Umpire in addition to calling the lines. The easiest way to get on the court at tennis tournaments around the world is to become a Line Umpire.
Chair Umpires. The Chair Umpire is the most important person on the court during a match, apart from the players. During a match, the Chair Umpire is in charge of everything from calling the score to enforcing the rules and handling the players. Great communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and 20:20 vision is all expected of a good Chair Umpire.
Community Official. Volunteering as a Community Official is a wonderful way to get interested in tennis at the grassroots level. They are in charge of a variety of courts during a tournament or competition. They offer an assistance and education to players, parents, and coaches, as well as assisting in the smooth operation of an event. Community Officials begin as Court Monitors, assisting in the identification of on-court issues, but soon advance to Court Supervisors, assisting in the enforcement of the Rules of Tennis and the Code of Behavior, as well as resolving on-court issues.
Referees. The Referee is the only authority on all rules and regulations. Referees are in charge of all facets of a tournament, from the draws and schedules to implementing the rules and ensuring that everything runs smoothly and fairly. Being a referee necessitates extensive knowledge of tennis rules, the ability to multi-task in a high-pressure setting, and the ability to listen and interact effectively with all tournament participants.

Men's Singles Table Tennis Final | Rio 2016 (Sport Performance Analysis)
Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
The flaming competition between Ma Long and Zhang Jike for Men's Singles Table Tennis Final in Rio 2016 Summer Olympics took place on August 11, 2016 at Riocentro. Apparently, Ma Long won the gold with a resounding 4-0 victory, defeating the previous champion, Zhang Jike.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the scorching game between the two players happened in Rio de Janeiro. Unlike majority of any other sports, table tennis only requires a playing table tennis for it to be played by athletes. However, it doesn’t mean that you could play it in small areas that you should. For it to be facilitated and officiated clearly, it also requires a court. Moving on, a full tennis table has size dimensions of 9 feet (2.74m) long, 5 feet (1.525m) width, and 2 feet 6 inches (76cm) height measure from the ground. Furthermore, the net is 6 feet (1.83cm) long, and 6 inches (15.25cm) high.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Ball - is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small rackets.
2. Rubber, Racket, or Paddle - is used by table tennis players in hitting the ball consecutively as they play the sport.
3. Table Tennis Table - a table used for playing table tennis.
4. Net and Post - designating the demarcation between the two opposing courts, it guarantees that all strokes are viable and legal based on the ITTF rules.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Stance and footwork. It's important to get your body in the right place before hitting your first shot. Your grip and whether you're attacking, defending, or serving the ball play a role in determining your stance in relation to the table. Even if your arm location and placement relative to the table changes, you should maintain proper stance and body posture at all times.
Feet. To travel side-to-side easily, your feet should be wide, about 1.5 or more shoulder widths apart. Maintain a small lead with your non-dominant foot.
Ankles and knees. Preserve a slight bend and flexibility in your knees and ankles, and place your weight forward on your toes. This prepares the body to move forward or backward when necessary.
Back and shoulders. Establish a slight bend in the upper body at the hips. Your whole body is in a slightly crouched posture, ready to jump into action, with your feet, elbows, and waist bent and your shoulders forward.
Arms. Your elbow and paddle should be in front of you, and your arms should be in front of your body. The shake hand grip and the pen hold grip are the two most common table tennis grips. Depending on your preference and style of play, different types of grips have different variations for your hand position on the paddle.
Forehand Drive. The most basic and fundamental stroke in table tennis is the forehand drive. It responds to aggressive/attacking strokes by landing your ball near the opponent's baseline or sideline. To add power to the ball with a forehand drive, rotate your upper body away from the ball and transfer your weight to your back foot while moving your arm straight back.
Backhand Drive. The backhand drive is a forehand drive that is designed to return attacking shots and land the ball at the opponent's baseline. To deliver a backhand drive, keep your stance angled toward the table with your free arm pointed toward the ball (rather than reaching with your arm).
Backhand Push. Short balls are returned with the backhand push, which prevents your opponent from making an attacking return. Your body should be in line with the ball, rather than reaching to the side with your arm, as with the backhand drive.
Forehand Push. The forehand push is also used to return short balls and defend against attacks. As with the forehand drive, you should stand with your dominant foot slightly back and rotate your upper body to emphasize the paddle's motion. You do a smaller backswing, rotate your wrist forward through the range of motion, and keep your paddle open to brush beneath the ball, unlike the forehand drive.
Serving. The final basic skill is a table tennis serve, which is critical because the serve is the only time you have complete control of the ball and the game. There are several different types of serves, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, but the fundamentals remain the same.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Ma Long. The efficiency that Ma Long gave out in his performance was inevitably remarkable. Indeed, he has proved himself to the whole world as an outstanding athlete with exceptional technical and tactical skills. Three of the main skills that he highly utilized throughout the whole competition are: forehand flick, forehand attack the semi-long ball, and backhand side-spin serve. Firstly, the forehand flick that has been useful in his survival in the competition. Considered as the one of the most advanced skills in table tennis, it is astonishing that he executed this very well. Hence, this technique has been very useful to him in the game because it gave him the ability to generate more power. Secondly, the forehand attack the semi-long ball which gave him the capability of attacking just right after his every serve. It’s amusing to see how he steps around, using his backhand flick with his perfect footwork and stance. Lastly, the backhand side-spin serve which has completely changed the result of the match, and aided a lot to his triumph. His footwork is undeniably high-quality, and is very hard to imitate by ordinary players. Hence, the quality of his shots and next shots highly depended on this technique.
Tumblr media
Zhang Jike. This player was certainly a formidable one with marvelous technical and tactical skills. He was a former Grand Slam winner himself, thus, it’s unquestionable that he is truly a skilled player. Three of the main skills that he mostly showcased in the competition are: forehand drive technique, backhand loop of underspin ball, and forehand fast serve. Firstly, the forehand drive technique that most likely aids in learning the correct weight transfer. This is the technique that he used systematically, resulting him to attain a much easier way of rotating his waist as he moves. Secondly, the backhand loop of underspin ball which is a technique that most players find hard to do, but he perfectly executed. It’s honestly fascinating to see how his legs flawlessly lift up and hit forward with the incorporation with his body. Lastly, the forehand fast serve which was the best technique he has utilized, in my own opinion. Thus, this skill gave him higher chance to attack first, and get the advantage in every next rally.
Rules of the Game
Tumblr media
Scoring and Games
1. The games are played to a total of 11 points.
2. Players alternate serving two serves each. To win a point, a player does not have to win specifically off their own serve.
3. If a game is tied at ten points apiece, a player must win by two points. In this case, each player alternates serving one serve.
4. Games are played best of five (first to win three games) or best of seven in competition (first to win 4 games). Social games can also be played in a best-of-three format (first to win 2 games).
Legal Serving
1. You must throw the ball at least 6 inches straight up from a flat palm (16cm).
2. Your toss and service touch must be on the other side of the table (not over).
3. With every part of your body, you cannot cover the ball from the ball toss to touch.
4. It's a let if the ball reaches the net during service; the point is replayed. Let serves have no time limit or point deductions.
Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
Table tennis is played to the best of five or seven games in a competitive game. The winner of a game is the first player to score 11 points. If a game is tied at 10-10, however, a player must win by two simple points. If you lose a point, you do not lose service; instead, each player must serve for two points in a row before passing the service to their opponent.
A referee is assigned to each table tennis match, along with a deputy who may work on their behalf. Throughout a tournament, the referee is expected to be present at the venue and enforce the rules.
An umpire is named to determine the outcome of each point or rally during a table tennis match. When applying the ITTF's laws and regulations, the umpire must use their best judgment. When the umpire is officiating by themselves, their decision is final, and they should be seated about 2–3 meters from the table's side and in line with the net.

7. Headband - is a clothing accessory worn in the hair or around the forehead, usually to hold hair away from the face or eyes, and it helps the sweat from getting into your eyes.
8. Socks - garment for the foot and lower part of the leg, typically knitted from wool, cotton, or nylon.
9. Water Bottle - is a container that is used to hold water, liquids or other beverages for consumption.
10. Towel grips - are for people that sweat a bit more on their hands. It'll absorb the sweat so your racket won't fly out of your hand when you clear.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Having enough knowledge about the basic skills of any sports beforehand is very essential. Without knowing these, one wouldn’t be able to play the sport accurately, and it could even hinder the player to not be able to become better at the sport. Hence, down below are the following basic skills in badminton:
Grip. This is a way of holding the racket in order to hit shots during a match. A good badminton game starts with how you hold your racket which is the most important basic step. A good grip on badminton rackets can reduce injuries, increase the range of shots and produces more efficient hits. Hence, these are some examples of grip: forehand grip, backhand grip, universal grip, and panhandle grip. Firstly, forehand grip which is described as anything on your racquet side whether it be overarm or underarm. Secondly, backhand grip which is described as anything to your non-racket side whether it be overarm of underarm. Thirdly, universal grip which is a type of backhand grip where your thumb has moved to the edge of the fatter face of your grip. This is used for backhand cross-court net shots, backhand clears, and backhand straight drop shots from the rear court. Lastly, panhandle grip in which where your thumb and the finger pinch the top of the racket in order to tap/net-kill the incoming shuttlecock.
Serve. A good serve is likely to get you points and may give you some advantage during the rally. These are the two types of services: high serve and low serve. Firstly, high serve is used when you want to force your opponent to run to the back of the court by hitting the shuttlecock toward the rear end of the court. Secondly, low serve is used to bring the opponent forward by hitting the shuttlecock toward the front of the court.
Footwork. This is another essential skill for badminton. With proper footwork, you will be able to conserve energy and face shots coming toward you from any direction. Moreover, an effective and organized footwork provides superb speed and agility which enables the player to move around the badminton court swiftly and return every shuttlecock.
Stance. This is a crucial skill required in badminton. Hence, proper posture allows you to return the opponent’s strokes efficiently and enable you to get an advantage in rallies. These are the basic stances in badminton: defensive stance, attacking stance, and net stance. Firstly, defensive stance is used to retrieve your opponent's smash. Secondly, attacking stance allows you to return a short or high lift from your opponent. Lastly, net stance is wherein you place your racket foot forward; non-racket foot at the back. Place your racket in front of your body, slightly above waist height.
Strokes. This is the swing motion of our racket arm. These are fundamental to becoming a good badminton player and executing superior shots. These are the two main kinds of strokes: forehand shots and backhand shots. Firstly, forehand shots should be played when the shuttlecock is on your racket side. Secondly, backhand shots should be played when the shuttlecock is on your non-racket side with your thumb controlling the strokes.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Thailand. Kantaphon Wangcharoen represented his very own country, Thailand. This player, indeed, has some astounding technical and tactical skills. As observed, he utilized greatly the badminton forehand shots, however, amongst all of them, his badminton jump smash is probably the most exceptional to see. I’ve already seen numerous skillful badminton players who’ve mastered the said skill, but this player stands out the most amongst them. The way he shoots from a high point and travels down steeply towards his opponent is just spectacular. This skill has been used by the player mainly for his attacking, and has served as his winning shot in the game. Moreover, he also used backhand drop shot which has powerfully countered his opponents’ attacks, immensely aiding to his own triumph.
Tumblr media
Philippines. Ros Leonard Pedrosa represented his very own homeland, the Philippines. Although he lost to Thailand, it is still inevitable that this player also has some astonishing technical and tactical skills that deserve to be recognized more. As observed, he utilized defensive skills which have been very essential in his survival in the game despite of being under attacked by his opponent. Moreover, his gripping technique is also exceptional. Obviously, it helps him in increasing the range of shots and producing more efficient hits. Overall, he is a really good badminton player, however, he tends to be very tensed and nervous while playing to the point that it holds back his full power from showcasing, probably the reason as to why he lost.
Rules of the Game
Tumblr media
In every sport, having rules is crucial since it provides an agreement of understanding to competition. They define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the court. Thus, down below are the following rules every player should follow in badminton:
Scoring System
1. A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
2. Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
3. The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
4. At 20 all, the side which gains a 2-point lead first, wins that game.
5. At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
6. The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
7. Interval and Change of Ends
8. When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval.
9. A 2-minute interval between each game is allowed.
10. In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.
Singles
1. At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service court.
2. If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate service court.
3. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.
Doubles
1. A side has only one ‘set’.
2. The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
3. At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
4. If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves again from the alternate service court.
5. If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes the new serving side.
6. The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is serving.
Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
As a known fact, officials in a sport hold a very crucial role in the staging of competitions. They furnish leadership and guidance to participants, ensuring that the competition is conducted in a safe and fair manner. Furthermore, officiating offers an individual the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and to hone one's judgment skills. Thus, down below are the following officials in badminton:
Umpire. The main judge for the particular badminton game. The power to countermand any decisions made by the service judge or line judges is in the umpire’s hands. Furthermore, this is the person who guarantees that the badminton game is run smoothly and prevent any players from delaying the game play. Whenever a player requests to change the shuttle, the umpire will need to approve that the change could be made. Moreover, the umpire also looks out for faults committed around the net area such as whether a player touched the net when returning the shuttle.
Service Judge. The role of the service judge is to control the player that is serving in order to ensure that the shot performed is in line with the Laws of Badminton and any other regulation that might be applicable to the specific event. Thus, he/she is responsible in making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to the players.
Line Judges. There are four line-judges (two for each side of the court positioned at the baseline) who indicate whether a shuttlecock landed 'in' or 'out' on the line assigned. Hence, they sit beside the badminton court (right in front of every in/out lines) to determine whether the shuttle is inside or outside the boundaries of the court.

USA vs Serbia Full Game | Basketball Men's Gold Medal Match | Olympic Games Rio 2016 (Sport Performance Analysis)
Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
Almost but not quite! That summarizes the close tragic loss of the United States to Serbia on the 21st of August for the Olympic Games Rio 2016 at Carioca Arena 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. However, thanks to a bit of luck and some hefty early play from their frontcourt, they have managed to hold out with a 96-66 win against Serbia.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the scorching game between the two teams took place at Carioca Arena 1 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The said court has the dimensions of 94’ x 50’ | 28.65 x 15.24 m. Apparently, it is incorporated of several fundamental components: the baskets, the three-point arcs, free-throw (foul) lines, and the half court line. Furthermore, indoor courts are generally constructed with polished wood, while outdoor courts are commonly fabricated from paving, concrete, or asphalt.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Ball - a spherical or ovoid body used in a game or sport. It must be bounced continuously (dribbling), thrown through the air to other players (passing) or thrown towards the basket (shooting).
2. Shoes - are designed to act as shock absorbers and provide ankle stability with the flexibility to allow players to move laterally.
3. Hoop or Basket - the rim of a basketball goal broadly.
4. Basketball Court - the court on which basketball is played.
5. Blackboard - is a raised vertical board with an attached basket consisting of a net suspended from a hoop.
6. Uniform - consists of a jersey that features the number and last name of the player on the back, as well as shorts and athletic shoes.
7. Shot clock - is a countdown timer used in basketball that provides a set amount of time that a team may possess the ball before attempting to score a field goal.
8. Whistle - it makes the action stop (a foul, a ball out of bounds, a timeout), though it occasionally foretells that action is about to start (the end of a timeout or a ball about to be inbounded).
9. Armband - is worn by the captain of the team to help separate him from the other players on the team. Furthermore, the mild compression they provide helps keep player’s shooting arm warm and improves circulation.
10. Headband - are worn around the forehead during physical activity to absorb sweat and keep it from reaching the eyes.
11. Socks - have strategically cushioned zones for the left and right foot to provide support and comfort.
12. Towel - an absorbent cloth or paper for wiping or drying.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Knowing the basic skills of basketball is a must before participating in a game. Thus, it is one of the premises of coaching, sports performance and athletic training. If you know the basic skills of a sport, you’d be able to further enhance and reinforce your capacity in playing it. Moreover, down below are the basic skills of basketball that every player should be aware of:
Running. When you have the ball, running will help you to avoid defenders and get to the basket quicker. On defense, you often will find yourself needing to run after the opponent, especially during fast breaks. Lastly, this plays a substantial part in basketball. In a full-court game, you will find yourself running back and forth as the game quickly transitions between offense and defense.
Passing. Basketball is a team sport that involves finding a teammate who is open for a shot. By means of this, the ability to pass the ball to this player can make the difference between scoring and not scoring. Prominent passers play a prodigious part in a basketball team. Thus, they’re usually the ones who set up scoring plays.
Dribbling. This is the salient skill that every single basketball player should know. Basically, this skill allows you to move up and down the court, maneuver past defenders and execute plays. Proper dribbling demands ball-handling skills and knowledge of how to spread your fingers for ball control. Furthermore, it is also best if you know how to dribble equally well with both hands.
Jumping. This skill determines how capable a basketball player is. Furthermore, it is involved in offense during the jump ball in the beginning, while taking shots and sometimes while trying to catch a pass. On defensive you will need the ability to jump when trying to block a shot or a pass. Above all, being able to out jump your opponent for a rebound also is crucial in a game.
Shooting. In order to score points in the sport, you shall shoot the ball into the hoop. To shoot accurately, square your shoulders to the basket and place your feet shoulder length apart. With your knees bent slightly and back leaning towards the basket, put the fingers of your shooting hand under the ball and tuck your elbows close to your body. Moreover, there are different types of shots you need to learn, including jump shots, layups and free throws.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
United States. It is an undeniable fact that this team has the most impressive technical and tactical skills. Within the years in this field, they have, indeed, managed to transpire skills altogether which have become the main reason for their good foundation as a team. Moreover, these have aided them greatly in attaining the gold medal in the competition. One of it is their defensive technical skill which immensely mirrored their offensive skills. As a known fact, this skill is probably the top key to victory in every single basketball game. As observed, this team have been able to flip side of the coin due to the aid of this very skill. The end result has been greatly influenced by this skill, causing this team to go through against the other team, and to exert immensely on them. Indeed, this skill is the predominant reason for their triumph. In addition, and based on my observation, this team also acquired rebounding technical skill that has covered both offensive and defensive rebounding fundamentals. This skill has heavily aided the team’s offense and defense, hence, ultimately influencing them to win against the other team. Lastly, their shooting technical skill is also very amazing, one of the reasons of their success. Evidently, this skill has empowered them to win the gold in the competition.
Tumblr media
Serbia. Although they’ve lost, it is indisputable that this team also has some amazing technical and tactical skills. Within the whole timespan of the competition, they’ve proven that they’re boisterous and fierce as a team. Based on what I’ve observed, this team has impressive dribbling technical skill. This skill has been crucial for this team for it helped them move the ball past their opponent without them being able to tackle them as they retain possession. Apparently, they’ve somehow managed to go through the other team for quiet a few times in the competition, thanks to this very skill. Furthermore, this team also possesses an astonishing body movement skill, and as a viewer, it’s really amusing to watch. As seen, they’ve acquired drop and swing steps, stride and jump stops, and the best for me, changing directions. Moreover, their passing and receiving technical skill is also good. This skill has made this team open for every teammate, immensely causing wide-open chances that would most likely result in easy layups for the team. Indeed, this team is really great, however, based on my observation, their own weakness is their shooting technical skill that is very crucial for every basketball game, probably the reason as to why they’ve lost to USA.
Rules of the Game
Tumblr media
One of the essential things to know about a certain sport is its rules. In sports, rules define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the court. Without having enough knowledge about it, this could lead to vast misunderstanding between the players. Thus, down below are the following rules in a basketball game:
1. The player must bounce, or dribble, the ball with one hand while moving both feet. If, at any time, both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, the player must only move one foot. The foot that is stationary is called the pivot foot.
2. The basketball player can only take one turn at dribbling. In other words, once a player has stopped dribbling they cannot start another dribble. A player who starts dribbling again is called for a double-dribbling violation and looses the basketball to the other team. A player can only start another dribble after another player from either team touches or gains control of the basketball. This is usually after a shot or pass.
3. The ball must stay in bounds. If the offensive team loses the ball out of bounds the other team gets control of the basketball.
4. The players hand must be on top of the ball while dribbling. If they touch the bottom of the basketball while dribbling and continue to dribble this is called carrying the ball and the player will lose the ball to the other team.
5. Once the offensive team crosses half court, they may not go back into the backcourt. This is called a backcourt violation. If the defensive team knocks the ball into the backcourt, then the offensive team can recover the ball legally.
6. Although the foul rule is described above as a defensive rule, it applies exactly the same to all players on the court including offensive players.
7. Basketball players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fist.
8. No player can touch the basketball while it is traveling downward towards the basket or if it is on the rim. Every player on the court is subject to the same rules regardless of the position they play. The positions in basketball are just for team basketball strategy and there are no positions in the rules.
How to Officiate the Sport
Tumblr media
Officials handle a predominant role in the staging of competitions. They provide leadership and guidance to participants, ensuring that the competition is conducted in a safe and fair manner. Basically, they’re seen as role models who are charged with enforcing the concepts of fair play and good sportsmanship. Moreover, officiating provides an individual the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and to hone one's judgment skills. Thus, down below are the following officials in basketball:
Referee. During the game, the referee ensures that it is played according to the rules.  This includes stopping play for time-outs or substitutions when requested by a coach. Furthermore, local competitions will often vary timing rules, thus, the referees have to check what specific rules have been executed. At the conclusion of all games, the referee checks the scoresheet and sign-offs that the game has been completed. Hence, its their responsibility to check that the score has been correctly recorded at the end of the game.
Score Table. In basketball, it is the score table officials that keep the score and time. The following are the 5 specific score table positions: chairperson, scorer, assistant scorer, timekeeper, and 24-second shot clock operator. Firstly, the chairperson is the one who ensures the smooth operation on the score table and communicates with the referees. Secondly, the scorer is the one who completes the score. Thirdly, the assistant scorer is the one who will assist with operating the scoreboard. Fourthly, the timekeeper is the one who operates the game clock, and also operate the scoreboard. Lastly, the 24-second shot clock operator is the one who operates the shot clock by stopping and resetting according to the rules.
Statistician. This is the one who records all aspects of the game, which is now usually done on a computer, tablet or smartphone or manually with a paper template. Common statistics recorded are: the number of shots taken and from where they were taken; rebounds (when a player catches the ball after a missed shot); assists (when a player passes the ball to a teammate who scores); steals (when a player gains possession from an opponent); and turnovers (when a player loses possession of the ball).

SEA Games 2019: PHL VS VIE Volleyball Women's Opener (Sport Performance Analysis)
Tumblr media
A blog written by Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
The scorching fight between the volleyball national teams of the Philippines and Vietnam in the SEA Games 2019 happened on a Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. Both teams have put a good fight, but apparently, Vietnam has taken the triumph at the very end, hacking out a 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 15-8 decision.
Court Dimensions
Tumblr media
As mentioned, the igniting competition took place in the The Philippine Institute of Sports Multi-Purpose Arena, or also known as PhilSports Arena. Apparently, the playing court have the dimensions of 60 feet long by 30 feet wide. These measurements are to the outside of the court's lines. Meanwhile, the volleyball net has the dimension of 32 feet long which provides one foot of netting on each side of the court, and is 7 feet 4 1/8 inches tall. The lines are also two inches wide, except for the center line which is four inches wide. Lastly, the poles are 8 feet 4 inches tall.
Equipment
Tumblr media
1. Uniform - this consists of a jersey plus shorts or briefs, pants, or culottes. 2. Ball - are round and traditionally consist of eighteen nearly rectangular panels of synthetic or genuine leather, arranged in six identical sections of three panels each, wrapped around a bladder. 3. Net - separates the two teams and over which the volleyball must pass. 4. Arm pads - offer impact protection, support and remain in a comfortable position. 5. Elbow pads - protective padded gear worn on the elbows to protect them against injury during a fall or a strike. 6. Knee pads - are important for making athletic defensive plays diving to the floor. 7. Shoes - provides stability for the lateral movements. 8. Socks - protect the feet and make it possible to play for long periods.
Basic Skills
Tumblr media
Athletes are always required to know the basic skills of the sport beforehand. Having the knowledge about it gives you the ability to efficiently participate in the sports, and to even excel in it. As a known fact, this also applies to volleyball.
Down below are the following basic skills that one must know in playing the sport volleyball:
Forearm Passing or Bumping. This is when a player contacts the volleyball with their forearms and redirects the ball to one of their teammates. The player performs a pass when s/he hits the ball around the torso level with forearms of the straightened arms. The player moves arms unattached under the approaching ball, stops and takes a well balanced and low passing position.
Volleying. The word "volley" is a more generic term that means contacting the ball as an overhead pass with your hands. Furthermore, this can be used on your own side of the court, or it can be used as an offensive way of getting the ball back over the net. A set, on the other hand, is generally a pass between players on the same team.
Setting. This is a specialized type of volley. It’s usually the second hit, and it’s intended to set up one of your teammates to attack the ball. So, it’s basically volleying the ball in a way that means the attacker can hit the ball over the net.
Attacking. This happens when a player jumps up and hits the ball with a one-armed overhead swinging motion, contacting the ball squarely with their slightly open hand. The intent of a hit is pure power – jumping helps generate more power and momentum.
Diving. This is basically crashing to the floor in an all-out attempt to keep the ball from touching the floor. It is often used to quickly get part of your body, hand, or forearm under the ball to continue the rally. Moreover, it can be thought of as a technique to control how you fall to the floor, while still playing the ball.
Blocking. This is a defensive play when a player jumps at the net to block the hit from coming onto their team’s side of the net. Basically, it is used to deflect the ball coming from an attacker.
Serving. This is the only time in the game that you start with full control of the ball. Usually, a server uses one, open hand to swing overhead and send the ball over the net from behind the end line. Less experienced players may serve underhand with one closed fist.
Technical and Tactical Skills
Tumblr media
Philippines. It is inevitable that despite not winning, this team has set up a good fight from the very beginning until to the last sets of the game. Seemingly, they've predominantly used power strike as their very own strategy in playing the game as a team. This has helped them score most points, and seemed to scramble their opponents and put pressure on them. For instance, the way Jovelyn Gonzaga's attacking tactics helped the team to take the 1-0 set advantage. Moreover, diving is also one of the few techniques and tactics that this team has used for their own advantage. Apparently, this strategy was a very good tactic to defend a spike from the other team, mainly the reason for setting scores in earlier sets.
Tumblr media
Vietnam. Indeed, this winning team has the most bewildering defensive tactics, generally the main reason as to why they've attained the supremacy in the game. Evidently, they've come prepared to snatch the win through this strategy. This has been used by them because they are surely aware that whenever the ball would be blocked, it may return in the opponents side of the court and they might not be able to react quickly enough, giving them a point for their own advantage. Moreover, Thi Thanh Thuy Tran, who led this team, has probably the most intensified kill blocks among the them. Above all, not many people may have noticed, but this team has a remarkable communication within the group, which doubtlessly the hugest tactic that has helped them to win the game. With this strategy, they've made it easier to wrap up the game.
Rules of the Game
Tumblr media
1. A team must have 6 players on the court. 2. The 3 players must stay in the front row, whereas the other 3 stay in the back row. 3. Each team is allowed to have maximum of three touches before hitting the ball over the net. 4. Same player can not hit the ball twice in a row. 5. Back row players can not attack the ball front row. If they attack, they have to perform the jump behind the attack line (10 feet line, 3 meter line). 6. It is allowed to play the ball off the net. It is a fault, if the ball contacts net outside antennas. 7. The ball has to travel between the antennas, or the imagined extensions of them when flying to the other side of the net. 8. Players are not allowed to catch, hold or throw the ball. 9. Players are not allowed to hit or block the opponents serve. 10. Attacking ball which is coming over the net is illegal, if it has not broken the plane of the net.
Officiating the Sport
Tumblr media
One of the essentials that a sport must have is the officials who undertake an important role in the staging of competitions. Hence, they provide leadership and guidance to participants, ensuring that the competition is conducted in a safe and fair manner. Moreover, this also applies to volleyball.
Down below are the following officials who officiate the sport volleyball, and their roles each:
Referee. This is the individual at the center of the court, dressed in black and white stripes. A referee’s duties include signaling when a rally begins and ends. The referee is responsible for officially recognizing team requests, substitutions, time-outs and communicating with the coaches at the appropriate times.
Scorekeeper. This is the individual who creates official records of volleyball games. Before play begins, the scorekeeper records team and player information. Once the game begins, scorekeepers not only track points, but also player substitutions, sanctions and time-outs. The scorekeeper keeps an eye on the individual serving the ball to track the rotation and notify referees of potential lapses. At the close of the game, the scorekeeper records the final score of the game.
Assistant Scorekeeper. This individual is also called as the libero tracker, who is solely responsible for updating the scoreboard and keeping an eye on the libero. This person records changes in the libero rotation, notifying referees when problems occur in the rotation.
Line Judges. There are usually two line judges, one at either end of the court, usually in opposite corners. Line judges work with the referees, signaling to assist in making judgment calls. These officials often use flags to signal when a ball is in or out, hits the antennae of the net, or when the server commits a foot fault, or steps outside the line as they serve.

2019 Final Bowling Idol Championship - Jaehyun (NCT 127) VS. Chanyeol (EXO): Sport Performance Analysis
Tumblr media
By Frea Dea C. Segovia
INTRODUCTION
This hot bowling game competition between Jung Jaehyun and Park Chanyeol happened last 2019 at the Idol Star Athletics Championships. Both have represented their own groups, Jaehyun for NCT 127, whereas Chanyeol for EXO. Chanyeol beforehand won gold at the championships, while Jaehyun had astonished in the semifinals by setting a new overall score record after bowling six strikes, despite only beginning to bowl three weeks before. Apparently, the intense match between the two have resulted with Chanyeol being the gold winner with a score of 217, and Jaehyun being the silver winner with a score of 195.
BOWLING AS A SPORT
Tumblr media
Before I get into the actual sport performance analysis, let’s get a short recap first about the sport, bowling. As a known fact, bowling is described to be a target sport and recreational activity in which a player rolls a ball toward pins (in pin bowling), or another target (in target bowling). The main goal of bowlers is to knock over pins on a long, playing surface termed as a lane
Moreover, a bowling lane is said to be usually 42 inches wide and 60 feet long, from the foul line to the head pin. The two lines of dots are called approach dots, with the first set located 12 feet away from the foul line and the second set is 15 feet away from the foul line. For a regulation size bowling alley, the room should be about 100 feet long.
Bowling as a sport could also be expensive for some. Other than its basic equipment: bowling shoes, and bowling ball; apparently, there are still other equipment needed in order for you to be fully equipped for the said sport. Hence, these are: wrist guards for limiting the tilting movement of the wrist to achieve more consistent throws; finger tapes to guard the fingers from the friction caused when the fingers release the ball can sometimes cause injuries or scars; powder to reduce moisture in their hands and improve surface grip; ankle, wrist, elbow bend to reduce pain and chances of serious damage to the joints; and lastly, microfiber cloth/towel that is used for wiping down the ball that can remove the accumulated oil that has collected on their track. However, there’s really no need to worry about personally buying this equipment for the game is usually played with rented equipment, and no special uniforms are required.
In playing the sport, you must know the basic technical and tactical skills beforehand. However, learning these surely takes time. Once these are learned, it also takes practice and experience to do everything correctly each time, depending on your play style. Moreover, these are the skills needed for the sport: grip on the ball; release of the ball; aim of bowling ball; and lastly, the walk of approach. Firstly, one of the fundamental steps is learning how to hold the ball. If you are holding it for the first time you have to observe the position of the holes and the angles they form with the rest of the ball and between them. Secondly, releasing the ball means understanding the axis rotation. When you release the ball, an entire geometrical construction is also released. Thirdly, aiming is also something you must feel and something that cannot be properly defined. In what concerns bowling, you have to find the right spot that can demolish the equilibrium of the pieces, transforming your shot in the best possible one. Lastly, the approach is something that cannot be defined in any other way when it comes to bowling. Walking the approach means finding the proper position between the preparation carpet and the platform, the perfect spot which will determine you’re walking towards throwing the ball.
Generally, one wouldn’t be able to formally participate in a bowling game without knowing its basic rules, and how it’s being officiated. Hence, it is necessary for players to know how the game should played. Moving on, a game consists of ten frames and the bowler is allowed to roll the ball two times in each frame to attempt to knock down all the pins. A strike is when the player succeeds in knocking down all ten pins with the first roll. A spare is when the player is able to knock down the remaining pins with the second roll.
SPORT PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
Performance wise, the two bowlers definitely have their very own unique tactics and techniques, defining their own personal styles.
As what I’ve observed, the follow through of Jaehyun is absolutely peculiar. The way he completely lets his arm relax in the arch, and his wonderful grip on the bowling ball give him extraordinary control of the direction and curve of the ball. With this tactic of his, anyone would surely not believe the fact that he had only learned to bowl within just a short span of three weeks. Moreover, he has successfully kept his footwork in rhythm. He didn’t even once delay his rhythm which holds the control of his run when he stops behind the line in releasing the ball. As seen, he has an absolute control on his feet, causing him to take a successful release against the ten pins. He seems to be relaxed while playing, immensely affecting his aim. Furthermore, it is beautiful to see him so alleviated, despite the fact that he was a newbie in this field. However, he could’ve used maybe a little more power behind his swing though to keep the ball from cutting in too short in its curve. By means of this, he could’ve scored higher, or much better, win the gold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Chanyeol definitely has an elegant form. The way his walk and stance leading into his swing is undeniably perfect. He seems to be so into the game, and is really aiming for the gold. Indeed, he was engrossed, fixed, and determined in playing the game. However, as what I’ve recognized, he tends to jerk his hand upward when releasing the ball, most likely causing the ball’s course to be deranged. Nonetheless, his footwork is unquestionably one of the skills that made him win the gold. As observed, he took a long-termed run, empowering the stamina on his feet and inspires his bicep to release the ball with the full power. Since he has won a countless of times before and is obviously experienced in this field, it was evident that he has managed to come up with his very own strategy, and that is his releasing time. He has kept a perfect timing in releasing the ball, mainly the reason for his triumph. It’s oddly fascinating to see how he perfectly controls his muscles, keeps the ball over his waist, fastens its pressure, then releases the ball depending on his very own footwork and stance. Thus, it will surely be even more interesting to see him get an even higher score if he managed to somehow relax himself, and get rid of those tensions.

Are contemporary people too much reliant on technology?
By Frea Dea C. Segovia
Introduction
Throughout all the years of revolution and modernization, humanity has finally had its breakthrough with technology development. Technology refers to the usage as well knowledge of techniques, tools and systems among many others to solve problems. Good changes can be observed in the community, all thanks to technology innovation. With this, the society has become even more civilized and advanced than before.
However, contemporary people seem to rely on it too much that it has become the reason for us to be unable to accomplish simple daily tasks. Thus, this has been the cause for our idleness and inertia. In this essay, I would argue that technology is, indeed, significant to the society, however, people seem to rely on it too much.
Thesis Statement
Technology has become an essential part of our lives within these years; however, it’s undeniable that contemporary people have become over-reliant on it solely causing them few negative behavioral effects.
Contemporary People and Technology
Apparently, people wouldn’t even try to dispute the idea that technology has, indeed, made their lives easier. Technology is something that anyone wouldn’t be able to survive if lost, or missing. People love it to the point that they wouldn’t even hesitate to bring it even if they’re at the restroom. Yes, that’s how much they adore technology.
Thus, it has become an unhealthy obsession, the cause for people’s idleness (IvyPanda, 2019). If you’d compare the people before and now, you’ll be able to determine how much they differ from each other; how much creativity and common sense have been lost because of this so-called technology. For instance, children at school couldn’t even be able to solve simple calculations like 6 multiplied by 2, and have to rely on calculators. Even writing a simple essay, students have to count on the internet for it.
This has also been the root for the neglection of social responsibilities (Wardynski, 2019). Unlike before wherein technology didn’t exist yet, adolescents would go outside their homes to interact with others, and often do physical activities with each other. However, this type of scenario couldn’t really be seen in this era of technology for people nowadays often isolate themselves inside their homes with their technology devices.
Moreover, the fact that people would prefer recording than just simply living the moment, is really sad and disappointing, too. To give an instance, when a person is experiencing a very special moment, like being in a concert. Instead of enjoying the whole concert, you’re recording it with your phone. By means of this, you’re no different with people who’re experiencing it through a screen. You may be able to watch the concert all over again, but you wouldn’t be able to reminisce what it felt like to be there in person.
Conclusion
Technology is very significant in the lives of people; however, we tend to over-rely on it that it leads us to our own idleness, the loss of our creativity and ability to think, and neglection of all the other good things we have in life. Thus, we must reduce our overreliance on it, if we wouldn’t want its behavioral effects on us to get even worse.

ACTIVITY 1.1: TYPES OF SPEECH
SPEECH ONE: ENGLISH SPEECH | NELSON MANDELA: Freedom and Justice (English Subtitles)
The type of speech according to purpose that was present in the video is Exploratory or Informative, since the speaker wanted the listeners to be informed about the real essence of freedom and justice. Moreover, his purposes were to provide information to the audience, and to help them understand the topic in a more in-depth manner.
The speaker, indeed, has achieved the purpose of informing the audience about the topic. Not only that he had managed to impart literally every single data that has to be imparted to the audience in regards to the topic, but he also got to successfully mention several important side-information and additional facts about the topic, making the speech much more comprehensible for the audience. Hence, he managed to inform the audience well, and victoriously achieved his purpose.
Moving on, the type of speech according to manner of delivery that was present in the video is reading from a manuscript, or also known as speaking from a manuscript, since it was clearly shown that the speaker presented his speech by constantly reading from a certain manuscript. Also, it was appropriate for him to use this type of speech according to manner of delivery, because of the fact that the occasion was very formal.
Overall, the speech was beautiful because it was delivered in a well-mannered way. The speaker spoke with clear diction, right intonation, and ideal pace. He also used uncomplicated and familiar words, causing his speech to be comprehensible and understandable for the audience. Furthermore, his authority while he stood there and spoke in front of those people, gave him the ability to get the audience’s attention, making them listen to him throughout the whole speech.
SPEECH TWO: ENGLISH SPEECH | EMMA WATSON: Gender Equality (English Subtitles)
The type of speech according to purpose that was present in the video is Persuasive Speech, since the speaker wanted to change the perception of the audience regarding the topic, gender equality. She mentioned few points in which she tried to convince the listeners that her side of the equation was more beneficial and favorable. Moreover, she didn’t just present life experiences that she had in regards to the topic, but her assertion was also backed up by historical data in the form of statistical results and experts’ testimonies.
The speaker, indeed, has achieved the purpose of informing the audience about the topic. As mentioned, she didn’t just present personal life experiences in regards to the topic, but she also backed them up with facts and certitude. The best thing about the speaker is that she didn’t just speak for the sake of speaking there in front of the audience, but she also spoke with her whole heart for the purpose of changing the audience’s perception in regards to the sensitive topic. Her real purpose wasn’t just to stand there and speak, but to convince the listeners, and change their minds. Furthermore, throughout the whole speech, she managed to be clear and concise with every word that she has said, allowing the audience to follow along with the information she was presenting them.
Moving on, the type of speech according to manner of delivery that was present in the video is Memorized Speech, since the speaker didn’t have anything with her as she started her speech. It was obvious that she studied and memorized the whole speech. Even though this type of speech has many downsides like forgetting lines, lack of eye contact, and tendency of having the speech delivered without any inflection, she had managed to overcome it all. There were no instances in which she forgot what she has to say. Moreover, she maintained eye contact with the audience, indicating that she was confident and calm. Lastly, although the speech was memorized, she surely delivered it with inflection, and sounded spontaneous.
Overall, the speech was beautiful because it was delivered in a concise way. The speaker spoke with precise modulation, right phraseology, and perfect pace. The speech was very coherent and comprehensible for the audience to understand since she used uncomplicated words. As one of her listeners, she victoriously touched my heart and mind with her speech, and I’m certain that the audience felt the same way, too.
SPEECH THREE: 2016 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren Tay Wen Jie
The type of speech according to purpose that was present in the video is Entertainment Speech, since the speaker captivated the audience’s attention and amused them with his speech. He provided comparisons and contrasts to the topic, causing the audience to look at the topic in a totally different and completely humorous manner. Moreover, his purpose there was to make the audience feel entertained, amused, and light-hearted.
The speaker, indeed, has achieved the purpose of informing the audience about the topic. Not only that he managed to make the audience laugh and smile through his hilarious way of delivering the speech, but he also succeeded in imparting the message of the speech in a direct and logical manner. His humor comes out of him naturally with much authenticity, making the whole speech entertaining and amusing to watch. As one of his listeners, he made me feel light-hearted and smile after his speech, so I must say he succeeded in achieving the purpose of his speech.
Moving on, the type of speech according to manner of delivery that was present in the video is Memorized Speech, since it was clearly shown that he presented his speech without having any manuscript with him, just him and his humorous mind. Even though his purpose there was to entertain the audience, he didn’t fail to impart the message of the speech. Moreover, he delivered it hilariously because of his gestures, facial expressions, and body language. The verbal and non-verbal mediums that he utilized went harmoniously altogether, making his speech much more relatable and comprehensible.
Overall, the speech was entertaining because it was delivered in a humorous manner. At the beginning, the speaker waited for the audience’s attention to be on him before starting his speech, indicating that he wanted to have connection with them. Despite his accent, he spoke with clear intonation. His pace really depended on what he was going to say. If he’s telling a joke, he definitely fastens his pace. When it’s some points in which he wanted the audience to take seriously, he slows down. Lastly, his sarcasm and sense of humor was just rib-tickling, it made me feel light-hearted after his speech.

Nagsisilbing kahaliling pangalan ang Itneg sa Tinguian na nangangahulugan sa Ingles bilang "the people of the mountains".

ACTIVITY 1.6. FUNCTIONS OF COMMUNICATION
The TV news anchor I assessed was George Stephanopoulos. Based on what I’ve gathered from my family’s and my observation, one thing we find really likeable about him is that the way he speaks is very coherent and calming. He maintains his pace just right, doesn’t go overboard nor slows down, making his words very understandable. Personally, I really like his tone because it’s very calming to the ears. Even though he was literally looking at the camera, it didn’t feel like it because he seemed to have this powerful connection with his audience. The genuineness on his facial expressions and voice is also very pleasant to see and hear. Moreover, he speaks professionally yet there’s still a tiny hint of him being casual, causing anyone who would listen to him to be able to relate and be attentive to what he is saying. In conclusion, he was very effective in communicating what he wanted to impart to his audience.

What we had lectured in our Pre-Calculus class was about Conic Sections, and I could say that I learned quite a lot from the discussion. Firstly, I learned about the four types of Conic Sections which are: Circle, Hyperbola, Parabola, and Ellipse. According to what was discussed to us, circle is described as the set of points in a plane that are equidistant from one point; hyperbola is the set of all points in a plane such that the absolute value of the difference of the distance of the distances between two fixed points stays constant; parabola is the set of points in a plane that are the same distance from a given point and a given line in that plane; ellipse is the set of points in a plane such that the sum of the distances from two fixed points in that plane stays constant. Secondly, conic sections can also be classified by: Discriminant, Eccentricity, and Equation. Thirdly, what I find really interesting about this topic is the fact that conic sections aren’t only limited for mathematical equations or problems, but they could also be utilized in the real life. An example of which are the architectural infrastructures, buildings and galleries we see from our daily lives. Even the things we have at home such as mugs, balls, etc., conic sections can also be present. Moreover, the fact that a simple intersection of a plane and a double cone could lead to the creation of conic sections, is just very amusing for me.

The King’s Speech: Synopsis and Analysis
The movie, “The King’s Speech”, depicted the several failed attempts of Britain’s Prince Albert (known to his family and wife as “Bertie”) to overcome his speech impediment. In the film, it was boldly shown how much he struggled in public speaking because of his very own speech disability. He has stuttered for all his life, and has been continuously seeing numerous speech pathologists who could help him cure his childhood-onset fluency disorder. However, it wasn’t easy as may it seemed. He came to the point in which he had almost lost hope and thought that it’ll never be possible to overcome it all. But not until Lionel Logue, an eccentric speech therapist, came to his aid. They, then, proceeded to the treatments, unexpectedly leading to the start of their friendship. As they went through on the treatments, Bertie revealed some of the trauma and pressure he went through during his childhood. Later on, one incident has caused a sudden rift in their friendship. When Bertie finally got himself to the throne, he realized how important Lionel is to him, making him to personally go to his home to apologize. Lionel’s qualification was questioned, and later on, revealed that he had never claimed to be a doctor and had only begun practicing speech therapy by informal treatment. At the last part, Bertie delivered his radio address with the help of Lionel who coached him every moment. As he stepped onto the balcony of the palace, he found himself seeing thousands of people cheering and applauding for him.
In the film, the interference of the elements and dimensions of communication and miscommunication was shown. Honestly speaking, the film wasn’t so easy to watch because of the few pauses of the main character whenever he was talking, and also because of the few facial tics he had. The very first scene has clearly shown the main character having a hard time speaking in front of thousands of people. I noticed how the audience only looked at him and eventually drifting their eyes away from him because of uncomfortableness and awkwardness. The scene wherein Bertie got tongue-tied at the accusation of David, leading the guy to resurrect his childhood taunt of “B-B-B-Bertie”, was so painful to watch. Also, the scene in which both main characters argued because of Lionel insisted that Bertie could become the king. Because of that, Bertie became outraged, accused the other of treason and mocked Lionel’s failed acting career. Clearly, miscommunication occurred in that scene, due to overlapping of messages and feedbacks. They were both literally shouting at each other, immensely causing miscommunication. Moreover, I loved the final scene wherein Bertie was doing his radio speech with the help of Lionel who was guiding him every moment. For me, that scene was the most nerve-wrecking scene throughout the whole film. Even though Bertie was having a hard time finishing the speech, he obviously done it well and perfectly. It was, indeed, his breakthrough moment. Moving on, I must say, the whole film was utterly beautiful and inspiring. Anyone who has problem with public speaking can surely relate to this. Personally, I could see myself in Bertie’s shoes, for I also couldn’t help but to feel anxious every time I do public speaking. Though I don’t stutter excessively like him, I could still relate to what he was feeling. Moreover, the film highlighted the issue of discrimination to people who have speech impediment. This was the very first film that I’ve watched which had a theme like this. The whole movie depicted all the struggles those people went through in their everyday lives, how much their disabilities have immensely caused negatively on their communication with the others, and the way their speech impediments are crushing their self-confidence. Furthermore, I learned from the film that we do not know the story behind their disabilities, so we must learn how to show respect and adjust to their situation. The courage they’re showing just by trying to communicate with others is just purely amazing, and they must be applauded for it. Lastly, I would end this analysis with my most favorite line from the film, “Because I have a right to be heard! I have a voice!”

The “Art” of Communication by Jimmy Nelson
In the year 2015, Jimmy Nelson had a speech about The “Art” of Communication at Institut Le Rosey. His objective was to apprise his personal journey of discovery of who he was and the people he met on that journey. Deploying the three main sections of a speech, his introduction captured the audience’s attention; the body presented his position; and his conclusion condensed what essence he wanted to depict to the audience.
Unlatching his speech, he showed a selfie of him smiling in a snowy place background. As he started, he said that, that picture of him was completely a lie for he was feeling the otherwise at that time. He, then, proceeded storytelling his journey to Northern Mongolia. As he goes on with his speech, I noticed how much he wanted to have a connection with his audience and make them get in on the act. I must say, his enthusiasm was fascinating to see, making anyone who’d listen to him be engrossed in his speech. Moreover, the part in which he narrated about the urine incident of him with the reindeers and villagers was hilarious, but I noticed how no one reacted to that. From what I observed in him, he speaks in a high-speed and doesn’t give enough time for his audience to react from everything he says. Not saying he’s a bad speaker, though. He was actually great and amusing to watch, however, the audience could’ve enjoyed more the speech only if he spoke in a slower pace and gave them time to respond. On the mid-part of his speech, he spoke about the forgotten indigenous tribes slowly getting recognition again. He also enunciated the accusation of him having a wrongheaded obsession with vanishing indigenous people, saying it is not wrongheaded at all but an obsession, a passion. “Until you truly let go. Until you truly form a humility, you can find empathy. And in that empathy, you can find a contact. And in that contact, you can discover who you truly are and the people around you.” This line says a lot about today’s world. In this generation, we tend to forget the world around us, we barely look deeper into things. It’s all about ourselves, not others. It’s all about egomania and pride. We lack humility, we lack connection. And it was beautiful how Jimmy Nelson wanted to point that out. In the last part of the speech, he quoted, “Look at the people. Look at where they live. Look at what they represent. Look at what they stand for and realize the value of them as we move into the future.”
The whole speech was beautiful, I must say. When the speaker said in the introduction that he is going to share a very personal journey, he didn’t lie. His journey of the discovery of who he truly was, was amusing yet very full of wisdom. It was not just a journey, but also a learning. Learning of who he was and connecting with people around him. Although he somehow overdid his body language and gestures, it didn’t make me less attentive on his speech.
