          it  had  been  a  rough  pregnancy—the  traveling,  the  trauma,  the  near-death  experiences—and  giving  birth  hadn’t  been  a  walk  in  the  park  either.  thankfully  they’d  returned  to  jackson  in  time  for  that,  kindly  turning  down  jesse’s  parents’  attempts  to  get  them  to  stay  there.  it  wasn’t  that  dina  didn’t  love  them,  she  did,  but  she  needed  space;  a  hot  commodity  that  they  made  scarce.

          besides  that,  she  was  determined  to  have  the  farm  she  dreamt  of.  her  little  family  deserve  something  nice  and  peaceful  after  all  they’d  been  through.  though  perhaps  peaceful  was  pushing  it—jj  seemed  hellbent  on  crying  throughout  the  night,  and  on  the  rare  occasions  that  they  got  him  to  sleep  through  til  mornings  were  just  that.  dina  at  first  had  wondered  if  he  were  sick,  but  had  been  assured  that  some  babies  just  went  through  fussy  phases  and  that  he’d  fall  into  a  regular  routine  in  time.  that  time  couldn’t  come  soon  enough.  

          she’d  vaguely  recalled  hearing  jj  fussing  earlier,  but  with  ellie  having  decided  to  take  care  of  it,  dina  drifted  back  off.  it  was  short-lived,  however,  before  she  was  up  again,  en  route  to  the  bathroom.  it  was  only  after  that,  that  she  decided  to  seek  out  ellie  and  her  son.  jj  wasn’t  in  his  crib,  ellie  wasn’t  in  bed,  and  while  dina  knew  she  didn’t  have  cause  for  a  alarm,  the  motherly  instincts  lead  her  to  tracking  them  down.

          it  wasn’t  hard  to  find  them—she  could  hear  ellie’s  lullaby  coming  from  the  porch.  she  watched  for  a  few  moments  before  clearing  her  throat  and  gaining  ellie’s  attention.

          “ call  it  mother’s  intuition, ”  dina  replied,  coyly.  she  opened  her  mouth  to  reassure  ellie  that  she  hadn’t  woken  her  up,  but  stopped  short  once  ellie  began  to  speak  again,  throwing  a  playful  jab  at  dina  to  which  she  gasped,  mock  offended.

          “ excuse  me, ”  dina  scoffed,  playfully  rolling  her  eyes.  “ don’t  act  like  you  don’t  love  it  when  i  fuss  at  you  and  boss  you  around… ”  she  winked  before  moving  to  sit  in  the  chair  next  to  ellie’s.  “ i’m  sure  it’s  nothing  serious…  the  doctor  says  it’s  no  uncommon  for  babies  to  be  fussy… ”

          dina  watched  her  sleeping  son  for  a  moment  before  her  gaze  flicked  back  up  to  ellie’s.  “ you’d  didn’t  have  to  get  up  with  him,  y’know…  i  could’ve  got  it. ”  it’s  not  unappreciated,  however.  dina  just  worried  about  how  much  ellie  was  sleeping,  but  was  careful  not  to  bring  it  up  too  often,  lest  ellie  get  annoyed  at  her  prying.

Nighttime was when the monsters crawled out from the shadows, only these monsters couldn’t be fought with brute strength like the Infected could. They were wedged into the mind like weeds that refused to be unrooted— memories and past decisions coming back to haunt you. For Ellie, her nights were often consumed by the faces of those she’d killed flashing through her brain in quick time. And if it wasn’t ghosts from the past who’d died at her hands.. it was Joel’s face in his last moments, bloodied with lifeless eyes staring right through her. Tonight was by far the worst with Ellie waking up in a cold sweat, palpitations wracking her chest in unsteady floods as ragged breaths filled the silence. Tonight it was all about Abby— their last meeting playing out with no detail spared.

Ellie could remember it as though it were only yesterday. Abby’s tall silhouette menacingly looming above her, that exact same murderous look in her eyes she’d worn with Joel. She thought it was the end for her, completely at the other woman’s mercy. And funnily enough.. Ellie decided she could accept that if she let Dina live. However, to her surprise.. Abby had once again walked away and left her alive with an eerily murmured ‘don’t ever let me see you again.’

It was those words that had Ellie’s mind begin to stray down a darker path. It still wasn’t over. It would never be over until Abby was dead. She needed to find her. She needed closure, otherwise— her thoughts came to a screeching halt with the sound of a baby’s soft crying coming from the crib at the end of her and Dina’s bed. JJ. Clearly she wasn’t the only night owl. A quick glance over at Dina to confirm she was still asleep, Ellie silently slid out of bed and crossed the room to carefully scoop up the newborn. “Can’t sleep either, bud?” She knew the feeling all too well. Hopefully his dreams weren’t as cruel as hers.

Making her way out onto the porch of the farmhouse they’d began to restore, Ellie perched herself in the rocking chair where she began to softly rock JJ back to sleep, the tune to Future Days a quiet hum in hopes to soothe him. Thankfully it seemed to have done the trick, the little boy out like a light within a couple of minutes, bundled snuggly in her arms. “Sleep tight, kiddo..”

Too focused on JJ to catch the sound of the front door clicking open, it was only once a playful clearing of somebody’s throat was given did Ellie snap her attention up to Dina. So much for being stealthy, huh? “..Did I wake you? No surprise there. You hear everything.” A teasing smile graced her lips, Ellie shifting her gaze back down to JJ. “Just got him back to sleep. He’s been extra fussy today.. must get it from you.”
