in addition to that post, & because yelling at dia makes me even sadder, i think it’s very fitting for pei ming to be the type to encourage hualian throughout the book. him, out of everyone, knows how precious & rare this “one-in-a-million” love is.
& him, out of everyone, knows what it’s like being scared to be happy in this life. especially, when, for the majority of it, you’ve felt like you’ve done nothing but wrong. so him watching hualian play out is just so ...... wah

headcanon —
i want to fully state that the main reason i love & chose to write pei ming was because — despite his very charming & unbothered image of this powerful general who went against all odds & all the voices to ascend — he’s a coward.
he’s so hopelessly scared: he strives to forget his past, not make amends with it. not once has he looked it in the eye & tried to be happy with the present. he jumps into battle not because of valor, but because he can’t bear the thought of losing someone else.
pei ming can’t even bring himself to use a spiritual sword again even in fatal danger.
but at the same time, he doesn’t fear death himself nor does he cower away from finding what he enjoys in life. he’s so scared & he’s so brave.
#headcanon.#ooc.#just ueu eu euueueuee#like ugh he's genuinely one of the most cowardly characters in the novel and i really love that#does it make him more or less brave?#i don't think it matters he's just pei ming#and being yourself is all you can hope to be#that's my greater take on him and ive been meaning to type this for so long#he's so#like i think sometimes he just wants to crumple down and scream :)

starter for @vagomvndo / wei wuxian + pei xiu
after years of being isolated from the heavenly realm, he came to appreciate the new free time as a mortal. he did have to repay rain master’s kindness territory through work, but that was only in the mornings & early afternoon. nothing near the demands of the heavenly court, so he idled around.
pei xiu didn’t spend his days sightseeing — he’s seen everything atop clouds — but cleared out nests of ghosts, took on jobs as a stray cultivator, & helped stop minor fights. when he passed by a new village, he always moved toward the nearest daoist temple.
people were crowding around in pacts, whispering to themselves about the yiling patriarch being present. pei xiu picked up the essential details. an infamous demonic cultivator with frightening levels of power. loud & likely drinking more than any normal person at an inn. in short, not hard to miss.
he considered himself modest & polite, but he didn’t care much for face or shame. when he entered the lobby of the inn, he caught sight of the yiling patriarch just by counting the number of alcohol jugs compared to everyone else. without anything to lose, he walked up to the table he was at. kept a safe distance & bowed with his hands out in front of him.
❝ young master, i’ve heard you practice demonic arts. though i haven’t heard of your name until today, i humbly ask if you’d be willing to teach me a few skills. ❞ he didn’t mind everyone else thinking demonic cultivation was dishonorable. no one other than the heavens could smear his reputation.
#vagomvndo#verse 1. exile of sacrifice#pei xiu is not begging on his knees but his vibes are he's begging on his knees he's so bored in the mortal realm JF ASLKDF J#might as well learn some evil cultivation trick i guess#wei wuxian pls give me the secrets#but also i hope this is okay!! if u do need anything changed let me know and we can talk HAHA#also m too lazy to format so

starter for @aristarchos / xie lian + pei xiu
❝ i thought you long forgot about us. ❞ for these last few centuries, pei xiu believed no one else would ever remember the pain of the survivors, living or undead. no one to recognize the drawn-out, worn-thin HOPE for a savior nor to weep for the ones who never untangled the noose from their neck.
❝ you had no way of knowing what happened to ban yue, but we never expected to see you again. we’d figure it out ourselves, like we did after you died. ❞ he didn’t hold any resentment for “general hua” pretending to be dead in the stampede. it was never xie lian’s war to fight.
maybe he could’ve taken ban yue out of the frontlines in time, though. would she have SUFFERED as much then?
pei xiu closed his eyes before being able to continue. ❝ you surprised me. neither of us wanted any heavenly official to do it. all they’d be interested in is letting a few ghosts pass on, but i’m glad someone in this world saved her as the PERSON SHE WAS . still, i heard from ling wen zhenjun you got lured there ... would you have come if it weren’t that? ❞ his voice holds no anger or accusation. it’s aloof & only a question of curiosity.
#aristarchos#here u go a heartfelt kind of deep conversation HAHAFSDJFLK J#no but hhh i have so many feelings for the idea of people waiting for someone to help them but like JAKLDSF J#everyone who would know they're suffering is dead so literally no one can help them#and all their suffering is for nothing really#cause no one else cares#but :)#here u go

random starter for @woxingwosu ( pirate au <3 )
❝ you dressed up as a woman this whole time? ❞ pei ming raised his eyebrow at xie lian. even with makeup washed off & clothes switched out for male ones, he still found it hard to believe. xie lian had a slender build & a naturally beautiful face.
conflicts stormed around in his head: he’d been PURSUING xie lian since he saved him from an enemy pirate crew because he believed he was a woman. that wasn’t true anymore.
however, he was still beautiful. &, with that, he decided that no matter the other traits, THE FLOWER OUTSHONE the rest in the field. pei ming couldn’t ignore it.
but he also couldn’t keep him here if he didn’t want. ❝ alright, well, you’re free to stay on the ship. i wouldn’t mind your company. you’re much more pleasing to the eye than the sea, especially when you smile. but if you’d like to return to your normal life, i can easily send you back. what would you prefer? ❞

goldencored:
Scoundrels, a scourge of the Heavens. The Three Tumors were a cancer to the Upper Heavens— her brother was a tyrant and Pei Ming dabbled in coverups left and right. Ling Wen was the only one out of the three she could never fully understand; she was too private and too tricky to ever really reveal her deceit. Even so, sometimes it was easy to dismiss it all to rumor. Now she’s been removed from the Heavens for a long enough time that she’d very nearly forgotten about it all.
Smiling bitterly, she lowers her eyes. Maybe after this Pei Ming will learn his lesson about messing around with things he shouldn’t. Somehow, she isn’t surprised he knew. It hurts to tack on another betrayal to the ever growing list, though they were never truly close anyway. Small miracles. A-Feng doesn’t think she has the heart to suffer more.
“Was I the only one who didn’t know? Did the entire Heavens know that my ascension was fishy and I was too stupid to realize it?” Everyone clambered for the merits she would pass out, but few tried to befriend her. Too few.
She wishes she wouldn’t have been so stupid and naive. None of this would’ve happened. If only she’d known— maybe she would’ve prayed for the Reverend to be killed, maybe she would’ve tried to appoint He Xuan and save him. She could’ve done something.
Maybe if they all told her the truth from the beginning, she would have never given her name to the Reverend on accident.
“Since all of that is true, what happened to me… what he did to me won’t come as a surprise, then. Ge wouldn’t listen to me, no matter how much I begged. I tried, I really did, tried to make things right for everyone. You know what I got for it? He tried to kill me. He put his hands around my throat and squeezed and squeezed and I begged him to stop. But he wouldn’t. He wouldn’t stop.”
Her voice cracks and her fingers twitch, like she wants to claw at her own throat, like she can still feel those hands around her squeezing and cutting off her hair.
“I clawed at him and begged until I couldn’t anymore. Until everything was going black. But… but you know how when you discovered him, Ge was armless? Blackwater did that. Blackwater ripped off Ge’s arms to save me. And I don’t know why.”
once the story revealed itself — not in sunlight, but in dreary moonlight — pei ming sighed. ❛ don’t ... don’t make that face over trivial things like ascension. ❜ it was the easiest to address. unlike the rest of the tragedy, he knew very well what drew out the shame, the sorrow, the anger. ❛ there’s no point in talking about that. those ‘fishy’ ascensions you’re talking about were common things. besides ... ❜ he leaned back, raising an eyebrow at shi qingxuan. this was the easiest to don an armor of casualness against.
❛ even you had ways to keep people quiet, qingxuan. it worked, so don’t think on this. LEAVE IT BE . ❜ while these words mimicked comfort well, they were still frosted over with authority. it wasn’t about telling her not to downplay herself; it was telling her to keep off the topic. pei ming & shi wudu made the choice centuries ago & the consequences had already festered. there’d be no blaming here.
he had nothing for the rest. when was the last time he’d been rendered SPEECHLESS , without the power of his natural allure?
none of what he knew made sense. shi wudu was overprotective. he wouldn’t hurt his sibling. but he’d been wrong about people before. shi qingxuan & pei ming were proven wrong at nether water manor when shi wudu, the unstoppable tyrant, was found dead. what’s another?
❛ shui-xiong wouldn’t ... fucking hell, he knew what he did, why would he suddenly lose his mind? always saying crazy things like it’s better to die. roping others in, he’s so damn reckless & — ❜ he has enough tact to stop himself for both his sake & qingxuan’s. ❛ no, ignore me. you’re, uh ... you’re the one suffering most from this, let’s focus on that first. that’s the best move. ❜
this entire situation felt far from real. in habit, pei ming slammed his fist against the wall, rattling the building before he managed to catch his breath again. ❛ black water is a GHOST KING , who knows what his motives are. probably just satisfying his crazed bloodlust rather than letting it happen. has he shown up here since then? has anything else happened to you? ❜
#verse 1. to welcome the inescapable#goldencored#SORRY THIS IS SO LATE BUT I AM HERE TO KICK DOWN UR DOOR#drops pei ming on qingxuan's doorstep#here this is your comfort person now sorry there are no other options the rest are busy#he has a rate of 1000 merits per hour#but gOD pei ming can't even process the idea of shi wudu hurting shi qingxuan let alone try killing hER#HE FEELS SO BAD AND CONFUESD BUT MAN he doesn't know what she wants out of him#he's trying to go through it logically but also he wants to help her#cause damn he hates seeing people who don't deserve iT HAVING TO SUFFER :(#anyway hands uthis half baked

i’ll likely add this to my rules later, but i do not & will not engage in pei ming / yushi huang as a ship. furthermore, i do write pei ming as bisexual, BUT he leans toward woman 98% of the time. he’ll only get together with a man under extremely special circumstances & won’t go for it actively in the least.
#ooc.#that's all i have to say on that LOL tbh these are just things i'd rather keep because mxtx wrote them in as canon#and i'd just rather not touch it or mess with it#also because i have no interest in exploring them at all with pei ming so

lianlianbushe·:
“ No… go away, I don’t wanna… ” Pei Ming, for all his faults, was a relatively good and honorable man by any reasonable person’s standards, Feng Xin knew this. Still…he had no desire to test the limits of the other god’s honor and self control like this. His skin crawled at the thought even as his thoughts grew hazier. “ Lemme go… ”
Feng Xin squirmed against the arms holding him up. Try as he might to dig his boots into the ground, they found no purchase against it as dirt and fallen leaves transitioned to cloudy wisps while Pei Ming settled them on its fluffy surface. It wasn’t a surprise—now that the battle was over, the high he’d been riding to fight off the last of the Wraths despite his heat left him and he was crashing hard.
He could hear Pei Ming start to speak again, glancing over, he squinted at his mouth as he did so, watching closely as the words formed, trying to parse out the sounds into proper words. It was harder than it should have been. Like he was trying to hear from underwater.
Your palace…stay something…? Junior officials…something about being awake? Stay awake? Yeah, probably… Right? Heat left his thoughts—already typically prone to scattering—nearly impossible to keep on track. Autumn leaves caught in crossed breezes.
“ ‘m awake, ” he mumbled, unable to discern any better response, even as he sagged in Pei Ming’s hold and struggled to keep his eyes open.
All he wanted to do was sleep for a week to escape the throbbing pain in his side and the wholly unwelcome haze of arousal that Pei Ming’s stupid alpha stink was only making worse but… this was… fine. Feng Xin just had to stay awake long enough for Pei Ming to drop him off and his juniors would take care of the rest.
Easy.
No desperate calls to Mu Qing or risky distance arrays hastily sketched in his own blood necessary.
generosity was a gamble. he was already doing more for someone just past the border of stranger than he expected. the balance tipped toward feng xin’s favor for being injured & in heat. it didn’t mean pei ming wanted to bite off more than he WANTED to chew. atop the cloud, they didn’t move. for now, it was no progress until feng xin calmed down.
the struggles ceased first, earning feng xin a sigh & a nod. though, without any understanding between them — one right in the head & the other not so much — it’d start again. only the weak affirmative to his request to stay awake made pei ming start the ascent back to the heavens.
the ride was smooth enough to rest feng xin down temporarily. pei ming unlatched his own cape from his armor & tightly wrapped up feng xin’s wound. then, his arms curved comfortably around feng xin’s shoulders & under his knees. SLOWLY , GENTLY , he lifted him in a bridal carry. this way, he’d alleviate the wound on his side from unnecessary irritation.
❛ you’re not awake much longer, i assume. ❜ pei ming rushed them toward heaven’s gates. when his foot landed on solid ground, he shoved past onlookers toward nan yang palace. officials avoided his path & no one dared utter a question about him. the three tumors came with advantages & being a martial god made the sight believable. it was the normal treatment.
he received the surprising treatment the second he intruded nan yang palace with the injured general in his arms. all his juniors swarmed him, questioning, pestering, & THREATENING . pei ming sighed.
he had thought they’d get the gravity of the situation. apparently not.
instead, he ignored them & addressed feng xin, who should still be conscious — “awake” enough to answer him, though? — with the question he wanted to ask the juniors.
❛ where’s your room? i’m putting you down & getting your wound cleaned up before leaving. might as well. ❜

starter for @frostmaiden | aizhan + pei ming
rarely did heaven’s gates open for women. for pei ming especially, whenever such an occasion arose, people grew curious about her upbringing. what could ever bring a lady to the upper court? only ling wen ever made a remarkable impression on this dynasty’s lineup of heavenly officials.
pei ming traversed the great martial avenue in hopes of sneaking a glance at the new arrival. he wasn’t particularly interested at first; after all, ascension was not easy feat. no fair lady would ever WASTE HER LIFE trying to ascend. it had to be someone of a particular character.
when he finally saw a new face, pei ming hummed in amusement. the new heavenly official really was pleasant to the eye. a women & a classical beauty. not much different from the DELICATE FLOWERS who catch his eye in the mortal realm. what a stroke of luck.
stopping before the other, he smiled & said, ❝ i have to say, i’ve spent a long time here in the heavens. for a beauty like you to show up, have you thought of showing it off more? ❞

starter for @safaerax | pei ming + pei xiu
nothing about him fit the description of a DISHONORED & BANISHED god. nothing about him fit in at all. pei xiu leaned down to run the sickle across the rice paddies gathered in his hand. the sickle gleamed & caught the light, but the sun didn’t appear to reach pei xiu.
he rose, looking on at the expansive rolling hills of rice paddies. without a single movement to wipe away sweat, he, instead, placed the harvested crops into the basket attached to his back. he would have advanced forward silently, if not for the sight at the corner of his vision. pei ming stood awkwardly by yushi huang’s entrance into the farm fields. out of respect for him, pei xiu placed the sickle down & removed the basket off his body. he went to greet him.
❝ general. no one told me of your visit. forgive me for not having anything prepared for your arrival. do you need anything? ❞ he said, the elegant COOLNESS uncharacteristic of the rural SUMMER. he knew better than to bring up his banishment unless prompted by pei ming himself. better to avoid the sensitive subject.

safaerax·:
Perhaps that confession was a mistake— but he was still curious. And for once Mu Qing and Feng Xin weren’t around to really stop him from hearing at least one story. With his spiritual tucked away, what real harm would it do?
There’s a hot flash that appears on his cheeks at the mention of Hua Cheng he immediately is reminded of their exchange of spiritual energy and he quickly brushes the thought away and tries to school his expression. ‘ General Pei, you seem to be the only one interested in that’ he almost wants to laugh but he refrains, refocusing on the general before him who seemed more than eager to spill.
Xie Lian ponders for a moment before suggesting, ‘ Its safe you say enjoyed um.. a fair amount but is there one perhaps you really like to recall?’ He wonders if it even made sense, he wasn’t good at this.
❝ hoho, you underestimate how hungry the people are for any sort of word from the heavens. don’t be too quick to single me out here. you know how the heavens are. acting like the very mortals below us, ❞ he warned. if he knew one thing about the people below them, it’s that they loved their gossip. whether they’re gods or mortals, hunger knew no bounds. it bites into hearts like a savage beast would its prey; there is no acknowledgement of the blood pouring from its jaws. not until the taste hits its tongue. & after people know what they’re DEPRIVED of — be it violence, gossip, entertainment, pleasure — they’ll scramble for more of it. animals, all of them.
when xie lian’s story with hua cheng inevitably blew up, pei ming wonders what he’ll think of it. for now, he just fed xie lian’s curiosity.
❝ one? ❞ he thought about this. really, he had too many to even begin singling out just one. ❝ not really. i like all of them for the sex they give. they’re good at it & that’s mostly what matters. ❞
in an attempt to single one out, he said, ❝ i’ll say the most enjoyable ones are the women who leave their marriages not long before they meet me. they can be desperate for any sort of love & touch, so they don’t ask me to change. they see me & they won’t beg for anything more from me. maybe they’ll beg me a little to intensity things. i’ll gladly give my all either way, but it’s without hassle, ❞ pei ming hums at that thought. simply enjoying the things in front of them ... LIFE IS HAPPIER THAT WAY, ❝ not to mention the way they praise me in bed is a lot looser & free. don’t you agree it’s nice to hear your loved ones shower you with that sort of love? ❞

what herb are you? — dandelion
You grew up too fast and all you know is the calluses on your fists and the thousand invisible scars that you pretend don't ache. Your anger burns so bright, so hot or maybe not at all, so deep you could never tell it was there. You are yours and you will defend that to the death after so many years of being ripped apart and denied your own agency and maybe you are still facing the bastards who stole your innocence but you will survive because that's the only thing you know how to do without breaking, the only thing you know besides protect, protect, protect, protect, yourself or sometimes those few others you claim as yours. You are a thousand sharp edges but impenetrable, a traumatized child so covered by thorny armor that you promised yourself you're grown now, you're stronger than anyone who has ever hurt you. You're safe. Nothing will ever hurt you again. You're so alone though sometimes, in a world that sees you as too much or too broken or too angry or too hurt, and you want to scream with the too-much of it, prove that you're okay, that you're self-reliant, that you are strong enough to stake your claim on your body, on your mind, on your heart, on your people, and protect it from any who dare take it away from you. You are the sea in tempest, a howling sky, a tsunami in motion, a force of nature, no matter how much you sometimes yearn to be still, to be safe, to be small. You are a dandelion, stubborn and determined to grow in the rockiest of soil, and bloom again in spring.

goldencored·:
It is hardly a surprise to Qingxuan to learn that it was Pei Ming who took her brother’s body from Netherwater Manor and brought it back. Who else but Pei Ming could do so? Who else would care enough to other than herself— and perhaps Ling Wen, if she was feeling generous? None of that is news to her. Those are things she expected out of the great General Ming Guang, who was attached to her brother’s hip for as long as she’d known him.
Except her brother is no more. They are both without him now.
What is news to her is how determined the martial god seems to be about caring for her. Qingxuan is now keenly aware that whatever excuse she may give about why Pei Ming shouldn’t care for her will be ignored or rebuffed. She’s never had much fondness for Pei Ming while her brother was still alive, but this— changes things, no matter how she wants to ignore it.
And as much as she loves the little beggar gang she often hangs around with, she knows she isn’t really one of them. Even though she’s mortal now, they will never be able to understand her pain, will never be able to truly relate to her.
“Pei Ming… are you sure you want to know?” Though she isn’t sure if she’d truly ready to speak of what happened, she’ll indulge him— for her own healing and for compensation for helping her. “About what happened in Blackwater’s dungeon? About why it happened? Ge… he’s not… as upstanding as we all thought.”
when the silence extended long enough to assure pei ming there would be no further argument, he relaxed. as long as shi qingxuan didn’t fight him at every turn, they’d be fine. mountains didn’t usually stand alone, though. a mountain range expanded before them. pei ming felt they only just made it to the base of the first one. all they did was get through the terrain surrounding the true beast.
he sat down. his brows furrowed at the question. if he wasn’t sure, why would he ask? the question barely formed before it stopped dead in its tracks. processing the opening line, he wanted to laugh. was the wind master really this hopeful & innocent?
his next words came out slowly as it tread on dangerous territory. he wasn’t sure how she would handle it & studied every reaction to his every sentence. ❛ qingxuan. i never thought shui-xiong was UPSTANDING . i knew he wasn’t from the beginning. ❜
bottled in him were confessions of scandals & crimes. shame didn’t cap it. rather, it was knowledge. knowledge that they actively kept this hidden from shi qingxuan.
❛ don’t forget who we were. are. we’re the three tumors. if we could be considered good, then could there be anyone considered bad? MASSACRES, TREACHERY, MURDER, CONSPIRACY . who better than us? & if not me, then him. noble jie too. ❜
pei ming shook his head. without a waver in his expression, he had the audacity to shrug. ❛ i always thought it was strange he so strongly made me promise to protect you. i already had an inkling he TAMPERED with your ascension somehow. that wasn’t the surprising part. ❜ he helped shi wudu enough to know that.
❛ how he did it is the mystery. why black water was so involved & ... the things i didn’t see while i stayed outside the manor. how shui-xiong fell. what happened to you. the image you think i’m worried about ... it never existed. ❜
#goldencored#to welcome the inescapable ; pei ming#man it really is the way pei ming helped with all this in keeping sqx in the dark#no but she absolutely has every right to be terrified and it's JFSALKDFJ it hurts pm to see it but also#at the same time pm himself was part of the reason she went this far without knowing a thing about them :(#man does sqx have anyone they can trust anymore#i DONT KNOW HOW PEI MIGN WILL REACT TO KNOWING SHI WUDU TRIED TO DRAG HER WITH AJSDLKFJ#like on onehand.....#literal criminal#on the other hand .... everyone know shi wudu was super protective and loved his sibling so JLKFDSJF
