I Never Watched GMGoodbye

Hey guys, I know it’s been like 5 years since GMW ended but I just felt like this is the only place where I could vent.

So, back in the day, I put off watching the final episode because I wanted to film a react video to it (for my youtube, y’all should def check it out here). However, since I’m an insecure little pussy I never ended up filming one because my friends—at the time, mind you—thought they were boring. Which I hugely regret now because my reaction to it then, when I was still in the ship-bubble, would've been so much better than it was today. 

In conclusion, I recently got Disney+ and so I just watched Girl Meets Goodbye for the first time. And when I tell you I SOBBED.

Tearjerking moments:

1. When they opened their apartment to all of the old cast members.

2. Mr. Feeny.

3. Mr. Turner telling Shawn he should've adopted him.

4. Mr. Feeny!!

5. Shawn offering to adopt Maya. “I’m Maya Hunter now!*

6. The whole scene where Smackle talks about feeling sadness for the first time, hugging Riley and admitting that she cried. “SADNESS! I’m getting good at emotions now.”

7. Farkle telling Riley that he will always love her, and that he has since the first grade.

8. Sabrina crying in the Bay Window.

9. Topanga deciding to stay in New York. (!!!!!) (Why didn't they get a 4th season????????)

10. Flashback to Cory talking to Josh in the finale of Boy Meets World.

Funny/Cute moments:

1. Smackle asking questions to change the class subject.

2. Ava dressing up as Twiggy.

3. Maya kissing Farkle on the cheek.

4. Eric almost doing the Feeny call (although I don't remember why he’s mad at him).

5. Eric saying “hey Morgan” to both Lily and Lindsay.

6. Lily and Lindsay’s forth wall break by switching in the middle of their conversation with Auggie. 

7. Augava in the Bay Window. “I’m Mister..A-va Morgen-stern! Yeah.”

8. Ultimate Rilaya moment in the end, HELLO???? (maybe I’m just gay)

Cringe moments:

1. Every time they alluded to Josh*ya and R*cas being endgame. 🤮

I would like to thank everyone who I met while regularly updating this blog because I honestly don't think that I would’ve survived middle school without having my online friends to lean on. And I know that I fell out of touch with every single one of you after the show ended because I stopped coming on here. But you really did mean a lot to 14-15 year-old me who struggled with having no real IRL friends for a long time. So thank you. 

This post was really sentimental and I feel kinda shitty about it now so I’m gonna go to bed.

Okay no hear me out right I’m rewatching GMW (for like the 5th time leave me alone) and I’m on the episode where Maya and Riley ‘fight’ over Farkle because they realise how amazing he is (and he rlly is 🥺). But I can’t help comparing it to when Riley wanted Maya to fight for Lucas. They promised to never fight over a boy again, which Maya was determined not to do, but maybe Riley was comparing it to the one other time in their life when they had. Riley had seen Maya ‘fight’ her over Farkle, yet she wasn’t doing the same for Lucas. In Riley’s mind, maybe if Maya wasn’t fighting for Lucas like she did for Farkle, then she didn’t really like him. But we know for a fact that while Maya loves Farkle, it’s not romantic. So it makes sense that her reaction to both boys is different.

basically it’s 2020 and I’m still bitter about them byeeee

On Fanfiction

I was cruising through the net, following the cold trail of one of the periodic “Is or is not Fanfic the Ultimate Literary Evil?” arguments that crop up regularly, and I’m now bursting to make a point that I never see made by fic defenders.

We’re all familiar with the normal defenses of fic: it’s done out of love, it’s training, it’s for fun. Those are all good and valid defenses!

But they miss something. They damn with faint praise. Because the thing is, when you commit this particular Ultimate Literary Evil you’ve now told a story. And stories are powerful. The fact that it wasn’t in an original world or with original characters doesn’t necessarily make it less powerful to any given reader.

I would never have made this argument a few years ago. A few years ago I hadn’t received messages from people who were deeply touched by something I wrote in fanfic. So what if it’s only two or three or four people, and I used someone else’s world and characters? For those two or three or four people, I wrote something fucking important. You cannot tell me that isn’t a valid use of my time and expect me to feel chastened. I don’t buy it. I won’t feel ashamed. I will laugh when you call something that touches other people ‘literary masturbation.’ Apparently you’re not too up on your sex terminology.

Someone could argue that if I’d managed the same thing with original characters in an original world, it could’ve touched more people. They might be right! On the other hand, it might never have been accepted for publication, or found a market if self published, and more importantly I would never have written it because I didn’t realize I could write. The story wouldn’t have happened. Instead, thanks to fanfic being a thing, it did. And for two or three or four people it mattered. When we talk about defending fanfic, can we occasionally talk about that?
