Two environmental portraits I took of my brother for a module at university. While taking these photos I remembered the skills I had learnt using natural lighting when taking headshots of Amy. The original colours in the photos contrasted with each other so in photoshop I changed them to black and white which I think worked really well. Skills I learnt taking these photos involved trying to take a portrait in an environment that wasn’t a studio. I now have more confidence in setting up a shot in an unexpected or unfamiliar environment.

These are a few photographs from my project “Leigh Park” I submitted as part of one of my modules at university. Also attached is my artist statement. I took these photographs in and around the estate I live on. Professional skills I learnt from doing this project include writing an artist statement as if I was ever to have work included in an exhibition, I’d need to write one. I also learnt how to create and arrange my photo book to a good quality.

Headshots of Jess I did in the studio. Jess is a dancer and needed some headshots for her applications so we agreed to meet and take some photographs. I took inspiration from some posts of headshots I found on pintrest and photos Jess showed me of what she liked.  I set up the studio before jess arrived starting out with just one soft box then as the shoot went on we added another to make sure we had no harsh shadows on the face. In photoshop afterwards I just got rid of some small blemished and lightly softend the skin. One of the things I took away from this experience is always trying to get a mass variety of poses as in close up, far away etc. to make sure I cover all the bases and get the desired headshot.

Headshots of Amy done during our meeting with the performance students. I took these using natural light in one of the dance studios. We used reflectors to get an even light across the face and moved around the studio to get the perfect lighting. The thing I took away from this shoot was the importance of preparation. We showed up before the performance students to set up the shot and make sure we had the correct settings already on the camera, lighting etc.  This was important because we were in a new environment and it would have been unprofessional for us to be unready.
