Rules!
AI use is not permitted. All work must be written by you, personally, and can be any length or form (poetry, short story, fable, etc).
These morals can be taken as black, white, or as grey as you want them to be!
Tag your submissions with #MoralMay and #MoralMayDay_ , where the blank is the prompt number. (ex., #MoralMayDay12). Follow this tag rule for a chance to be featured on the blog!
While this is primarily a writing challenge, visual art is also permitted if accompanied by a quote or blurb.
While you can use an alternative prompt at any time, you cannot repeat one once used.
Join in at any time! You do not have to complete every day, and late submissions still have a chance at being reblogged (as long as it is in the month of May).
Any fandom work is welcome! All original work is welcome!
Completionist Rule: Post for every daily prompt, every day, in order. Tag #MoralMayCompletionist on Day 31 so I can find you and give you a shoutout!
FAQ
"I don't understand the prompt/challenge, help!"
Worry not! These morals are up to interpretation and the aim is to spark creative responses. Don't forget, you can also replace any day with any Alt Prompt!
"Is there a banner I can use?"
Yep! I'll put it at the top of this post, though it's not mandatory.
"Do I need to tag NSFW/triggers?"
I ask that you do for the sake of other readers, but if you forget to, your work won't be disqualified. It's just a courtesy that should be followed for everyone's safety and comfort.
"I disagree with this moral."
Excellent! Write something that challenges it or twists it! Creativity is the goal.

I think one of the biggest and most overlooked things to keep in mind when writing is: is how/what I am writing accomplishing what I am trying to accomplish?
Part of why so many writing "rules" don't work for everyone is that they're assuming you're trying to accomplish things that you're not trying to accomplish.
This way of thinking is applicable at every level and every step of your writing process.
Is this plot structure telling the story I want to be telling?
Does this scene evoke the emotion I am hoping to evoke?
Does this sentence mean what I intend it to mean, in a way that is likely to be read with that meaning by most readers?
If something in a story is jarring, for example, it's probably because that piece isn't accomplishing what you're otherwise trying to accomplish in the story.
When I talked about finding epithets jarring in a close third person POV, it's because what epithets do (provide distance from the character) inherently conflicts with what the point of view was intending (intimacy with the POV character).
If a scene or moment is jarring or just feels wrong in a book, it may be because it doesn't match the tone you are otherwise trying to cultivate, it breaks or escalates the tension in a way that you aren't intending, or it has a different narrative feeling than you are intending with the book.
Even down to the grammatical level, you can get away with breaking a lot of grammar rules if you can accomplish what you want to accomplish with the sentence. Is it coherent? Does it have the meaning you intend? Does it have the clarity or ambiguity that you are intending? Does it fit the tone that you are going for?
The same idea holds for the message/implication level. If you are implying or stating something in your story, is it what you mean to be implying or stating? If you are mimicking or subverting stereotypes, is it in a way that accomplishes what you are trying to accomplish?

Tomorrow
I have not been very consistent with these T~T but I'll keep trying anyway!
Thanks @flashfictionfridayofficial for another prompt!
It had started off as a date; a fixed point in the future that daughter could look forward to; something that could keep her going and help push through whatever drudgery that wanted to next consume her.
Then it became a mantra; a whispered prayer holding her together whenever work threatened her breakdown; a chanted affirmation for the scepticism in her weary reflection.
But now? Now it was a joke. A cruel reminder of her shortcomings, the echoing laughter of the fates, another shadow in the unattainable distance she once longed for.
Now, she wishes she had just never hoped.

Needabeta FAQ!
Wondering what this is about, or how it works? This FAQ is for you!
What is a Beta?Hereâs whatâs Fanlore says about Betas. The short answer is: someone who looks over your work to check for consistency, grammar, formatting, canon-compliance, who can brainstorm with you, and/or cheer you on! For more in-depth understanding, hereâs @theirprofoundbondâs recap (Tumblr and AO3)
What is Needabeta? Itâs a tool to facilitate connection between Betas and Writers. Writers can search the Beta File, find potential Betas, get in touch, and if the Beta volunteer is available and interested Writers can discuss their needs.
How do I find a Beta? Head over to the Beta File and do a search (ctrl+F for instance) ! You can then type in your needs in the search box: the Witcher, Dragon Age, a language⌠and see who comes up, what their Beta skills are, their languages, squicks, and how to get in touch! The more recent signups are at the bottom of the sheet; the first column will let you know when the Beta signed up. Warning: it is going to be less manageable on a phone screen due to the sheer amount of information. Itâs a big spreadsheet :-) Here is how you can use filters. Tips: searching for âallâ or âanyâ can help you find people who are okay with betaing in any fandom, and some fandoms have different names: Avengers / MCU / Marvel Cinematic Universe⌠We do not publish individual requests for Betas. Thatâs what the Beta File is for ^_^
Do I need to be on Tumblr? Nope! Asks and submissions are open to anyone, anons included.
How do i sign up to be a Beta Volunteer? You can fill out our form! You can say what youâre comfortable with and what you will not work on, what fandoms youâre okay with (it can be any fandom!), what your skills are⌠Signing up doesnât mean you have to accept any Beta ask, simply that youâre open to the possibility.
Are you still active? Yes ;-) the point of the blog is not to flood anyoneâs dash; it is simply there as an easy home for the Beta File and Beta Form, as well as a way to get in touch with the admins.
I need to modify my info on the Beta File / delete my info⌠Send us an ask with two identifying elements: for instance, the row number, your fannish name used in the row⌠to make sure we modify the correct row! Without two identifying elements, we will not make the modifications: we do not want to modify / delete the wrong row! You can also choose to have it entirely deleted and then resubmit via the Beta Form if there are a lot of changes. This is fine :-) Anon asks are replied to publicly on the blog (no other option!), and asks coming from a Tumblr blog get a private answer. If you canât send asks, then you can use the Submission form as a plan B!
Why canât I edit my entry myself? Because we know that itâs easy to mess up a spreadsheet, even when you know how to use one. However, we reply to asks very quickly!
I canât see all the information in a cell! Thatâs because there is a lot of information, in which case we change the formatting so itâs not making all the row unreadable. The information is still in the cell, as long as you click on it. (more details here and here)
Is this only for fanfiction or also for profic? Some Beta volunteers are okay with betaing original work. See our more detailed answer here!
Should I pay my Beta? This blog is mostly geared towards fanworks, and while gifts can never go wrong and donât have to be monetary it is, generally speaking, not considered something one pays for in fandom. If youâre looking for professional editing, Needabeta is not the tool you need. See our more detailed answer here!
How can I know my Beta / Writer is of legal age? You canât, and we canât either. We all have to operate on the good faith of everyone; whether itâs a question in the form or when youâre privately talking to your potential Beta, we canât guarantee all parties are telling the truth. Legal age also means different things in different places for different activities. You can, however, give your age when filling in the form and/or when communicating with your Beta or Writer! See our more detailed answers here, here, and here!
Iâm organizing an exchange / fanweek⌠and my event needs Betas, can you reblog? Sure! You can @needabetaâ us or leave a submission. You are also welcome to reblog this FAQ, or that post, or this post!Â
Oh my, the Beta File is overwhelming⌠How can I find a Beta? > Ctrl+F will not work on every computer; on Apple itâs a different shortcut, for instance. You can also, on Google Sheets, use Edit > Search and Replace; you wonât be able to replace anything, donât worry, but it will lead you to specific cells. You can then use the Tab key or the little up and down arrows in the search box to find specific Betas for a fandom, see if they fit your needs, when they signed up initially, and how to contact them. Bear in mind that you can have people entering both Supernatural (147 as of the time of writing this post) and SPN (4), for example. Many also list Any, All / Most fandoms, Just ask if theyâre open to more than those listed. We regularly have asks to edit fandom lists!
> Another option is putting your mouse over the top of a column, where you have the letter, and looking for the little arrow to filter and sort the data; this will be useful for specific columns: if youâre looking for someone comfortable with mature content (column H), willing to work on a WIP (G), or cool with original work (J).
> More advanced but very useful to search is: Data > Filter View > Create New Filter View. You can Edit the range to select all the spreadsheet (as of the time this is being written: A5:J931) or simply select the whole spreadsheet first, and then find the little green arrow near the top of the column. Click on it, use âfilter by conditionâ then âselect by textâ and type your request, and the the sheet will be resorted according to your request. We advise you to play with this to your heartâs content and try all the options and even other filters - you canât break the Beta File if youâre not admin, and it wonât affect other usersâ view! You can also see another explanation in Help > type Filter, and youâll have Googleâs own how-to regarding their use!
Weâll add to this FAQ if needed.
It looks like information is cut off from some entries Sadly, the Google Sheet does not automatically wrap cells, so we have to go in and do that manually. For more information, see this post.
What is âoriginal workâ? Itâs a work which is not set in any specific fandom, but still is fannish in nature (not for profit, fannish tropes, etc.) See our more detailed answer here! FAQ tag!

Two characters saying âI love youâ without it being cringe

What unexpected things have happened? Something jumping out of left field all of a sudden? Or perhaps what has reared it's head out of the box? Was it old? Stored? Locked away? Something new? A mysterious delivery? Sealed or unsealed? What importance does it hold? Or maybe it isn't even what was inside or not to be let it but rather that box itself that held all important and clues! What beguiling ideas await you're creativity? Let us know! Now go, go, go!!!

The creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
The function of a growl is as a warning. It is a communication that violence is available as a tool, but is not preferred. Other outcomes, besides your death, are available and should be considered.
But the creature that wants to kill you will not growl.
If your death is the goal, then growling will only serve as a delay and may result in your escape, which runs counter to the goal. There will be no growl, no warning. There will be no snarl or hiss or bluster. The creature that bares its teeth with the intent to kill only does so to bring closer its fangs to your demise.
The creature that growls does not want to kill you, but will if it must.
I advise you to appreciate the warning. You may not receive another.

Talk To Me
Words: 100 Tagging: @flashfictionfridayofficial

Talk to me my darling.
Come into my arms and let me hold you. Let me help you shoulder your burdens. Let me give you the love you need, let me cradle your heart inside of my own.
Rest your head on my chest, listen to the rhythm of my heart. And talk to me. Do not feel like you should hide who you are, for I love you, flaws and all. Talk to me of your fears, of your hopes and dreams, of little nothings.
Talk to me my darling, and you'll find me ready to listen to you.

Someday your hands will be old and wrinkled, the skin spotted and bunching over your knuckles. And a child will watch you make something. It's a simple task, you'll have done it a thousand times before. But to that child, the smooth, confident way your hands move will seem like impossible magic. You have to keep living.
