Race To Zero
Tumblr media
2017: Artwork for album cover and website. Race to zero by John Matthias and Jay Auborn. Based on data from the 2008 financial crash, I turned it from a data graph, into a illustrator image, then it was turned into a fragile wire mesh 3D model in Blender and made interactive in unity for fly-throughs and photographing.

Senti-Mental
Tumblr media
2016:
Senti-Mental is a ludic brain model derived from a melding of an MRI scan and real-time twitter feeds scrapped form the collective mind of the Off-The Lip event. Tweets run through a sentiment analysis filter which impacts on colour and activity within the low-polygon-volumetric- model extracted from an MRI scan of head and brain. Looking more like a crystal-cave than a grey-jelly Senti-Mental is illuminated by the hive mind of visitors to the event.
Senti-Mental incorporates aspects of i-DAT’s Quarum Sensing Project which explores cultural computation, ludic data and playful experimentation with creative technology. Quorum is an algorithmic system that feeds off data generated by material and virtual environments and the physical and social behaviour of audiences. It incorporates bio-inspired algorithmic swarm decentralised decision making processes to generate a dynamic and evolving collective.
Quorum is an algorithmic system that feeds off data generated by material and virtual environments and the physical and social behaviour of audiences. It incorporates bio-inspired algorithmic swarm decentralised decision making processes to generate a dynamic and evolving collective behaviour. It is a volatile system of stimuli and response that is manifest as data driven interactive objects, installations and immersive audio-visual experiences.
Created using Unity 3D, Blender & Node Red. Shown at the ‘Off the Lip 2016′ ‘Bizarre Bazzzr’ by CogNovo https://cognovo.eu/events/otlip16-bizarre-bazaar.php

QUANTUM CONSCIOUSNESS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2016: Quantum Consciousness
: A visual/sonic installation that immerses the viewer in quantum phenomenon.
During the residency at i-DAT  artist Paul Thomas  assisted by Luke Christison  has been able to translate his art Quantum Consciousness to a fully immersive  audio-visualisation  dome environment of atomic data which indexes the quantum “movement” of an electron. This project delivers an aesthetic and immersive experience that places the viewer inside the virtual superposition of a sub-atomic particle (i.e. its field of probability). This audiovisual experience establishes a metaphor and indexical map of human thought. The quantum spin of the electron here mapped is serving as the conduit for the form of the sensory stimuli of the work. The broader significance of Quantum Consciousness concerns the possibility of non-human, computational intelligence commingling with human consciousness. This link stems from the fact that the “material” of the electron and its quantum behaviour is the basis of the possibility of quantum computation.
Quantum Consciousness (in collaboration with Kevin Raxworthy) is in the visualization of the co-emergence of thought-data (viewer) and quantum-data (electron). The scientific research informing the work was conducted in collaboration with Assoc. Professor Andrea Morello. Dr.Morello’s current research looks at controlling the spin of electrons and nuclei for the development of the processor in quantum computer. The experiment makes visible and audible the spin of the superposition of a phosphorous electron that has been bombarded by microwave signals. The paradox of the quantum superposition (best articulated in the Schrodinger’s Cat – thought experiment) exists as an actual and empirical condition in which an electron occupies multiple positions in space simultaneously, but none specifically.
The scientific data for this project is generated from a microwave signal which transforms a reading of Richard Feynman’s (1982) paper on the birth of the quantum computer. The link between the quantum computer, consciousness and artistic expression is presented via the installation through the co-emergence of thought and quantum conditions. Quantum Consciousness is thus an experiment in the imaging and materialising of impossible states of quantum matter and the co-emergence of human consciousness.
Quantum Consciousness is featured on the March cover of the prestigious journal Nature Nanotechnology. http://www.nature.com/nnano/journal/v11/n3/covers/index.html

Transimaging Conference 2016
Tumblr media
Workshop: IMMERSION
When: Saturday 2 July. 11.20-17.00
Location: Immersive Vision Theatre.
Workshop leader: Luke Christison.
The IMMERSION Workshop is delivered in collaboration with i-DAT’s Immersive Vision Theatre.
Fulldome is slowly emerging from its planetarium shaped incubator into a brave new world of digital projectors, real-time visualisation software, independent content producers and transdisciplinary collaborations. A transdisciplinary instrument for manifesting (im)material and imaginary worlds, this spatial-temporal bubble is a polysensory polypsical anomaly in the history of media technologies, sitting somewhere between a scientific instrument and a funfair ride.
These places are where all the different kinds of truths fit together as nicely as the parts in your Daddy’s solar watch. We call these places chrono-synclastic infundibula. (Vonnegut, 1962, p.11-12).
The IMMERSION workshop will use Unity 3D Game Engine technology to visualise various real-time data sets into fully immersive dynamic imagery and sonifications.

Edinburgh Cityscope
Tumblr media
2016: We are turning the entire city into a pervasive, interactive learning environment, visible to the world. Through a smartphone or other device, anyone in Edinburgh will be able to learn about the rocks beneath their feet, the buildings and trees around them, the history of every location and the art in every vista, carry out their own investigations and make their own contributions to knowledge.
This is a demonstration project created for the Hello World Event on May 3rd 2016. It will allow participants to add data on the fly to a fly-through 3D model of the city created in Unity.

2014/15: European / Moblie / Dome/ Lab is a partnership of European and Canadian cultural organizations fostering an international community of artists/researchers dedicated to exploring the full-dome environment as a platform for creative innovation. Building an international network for the exchange of artistic and technological expertise, with the goal of researching and documenting a language and grammar unique to the full-dome medium. The participants take part in eight residencies and public presentations offered in five countries.
Murmuration is about playful interaction with digital particle swarms and real-time manipulation of virtual/physical audio-visual objects.
Tumblr media
Murmuration [muttering of low, indistinct, whispers / abnormal heart sounds / mass cloud like flocking] is a series of trans-scalar and recursive transitions from the imaginary to infinity: i∞. Constructed from bio-imaging technologies and modeled fractured architectures, the low-poly-aesthetic of Murmuration navigates its audience through playful interaction with particle swarms of digital detritus and real-time manipulation of virtual/physical audio-visual objects and the environmental experiences afforded by their continuously transforming arrangement. Algorithms of repulsion and attraction maintain the cohesion of nano/molecular landscapes harvested by atomic force. Bio-forms, like artificial organs, and boney architectures, temporarily seem to come to life, create cavities and cavernous voids, conjuring uncanny atmospheres of elation, intrigue and awe.
Organizations: Laboratory of New Technologies in Communication, Education and the Mass Media (UoA NTLab), Athens / i-DAT (Institute of Digital Art and Technology), Plymouth
Participants/Collaborators: Dimitris Charitos, Luke Christison, Phil Mayer, Cameron Micallef, Lee Nutbean, Alexandre St-Onge, Mike Phillips, Olivier Rhéaume, Haris Rizopoulos, Ben Stern, Iouliani Theona, Penny Papageorgopoulou
