eyes lifted from the page to watch the boy for just a split second before they moved back to the words he was trying to craft. quill dipped in ink, the sound of it scratching against the paper as he continued on with his current sentence. mouth twitched, one side lifting up before the older man finally allowed himself to truly sigh.

"remember that, kid -- when everyone's in your ear telling you things that you WANT to hear." he was worried, what could he say? here rook was, preparing to go with 45 even though he hadn't even lived two decades. and yet, here they were. preparing for another expedition. another DOOMED one. he wanted to have hope, he really did... but varric was a realist. he's simply seen too many things go wrong. he wasn't going on this expedition to succeed. he was going because SOMEONE needed to write it down. for those who come after.
