Eye Candy // Cabin Fever
Auby Rizelle Rosales
Tumblr media
With the heaviness of dead week placed upon our hazy little brains after the sunny-fun-times of Lollapluza 2015, it’s become more and more difficult to buckle down and do work instead of daydream about summer.
I’m not sure if this shoot by Sticks and Stones has helped distract me from my finals or motivate me to kick it into gear... Maybe both? These grainy film photos and their lackadaisical vibes get me excited for summer, and once this essay is done I’ll be that much closer to the sunny liberation I’ve been craving since April.
Tumblr media
Appropriately named Cabin Fever, this series captures the essence of best friends in the summer time. Beginning Boutique, based in Australia, commissioned Sticks and Stones Agency to put together an Autumn look book, and the rest is history.
Tumblr media
With a pair of sun-kissed down-to-earth c-heads models, they created a summery, carefree series of photos that constantly remind me of how much I miss summer.

Hang in there, Lutes. Summer’s almost here!

If you’re wondering what to rock at Lolla while on a budget, have no fear -- the Goodwill Outlet is here.
Fellow LL contributor, Rizelle, and I adventured in Tacoma the other day in hopes of finding some Lolla style inspiration. We spent our day rummaging through bins of clothes and eating classic soul food. Check it out.
Tumblr media
(It was crazy windy when we walked out)
What is the Goodwill Outlet? Essentially, this store sells items that standard Goodwill stores have previously rejected. The Goodwill Outlet is right next to the Tacoma Mall and is easily accessible via car or bus from PLU. But guys, here’s the fun part: anything you purchase is by the pound. I bought eight items that included clothes, records, linen, tablecloths, etc. for ten bucks (!!!). This place has industrial bins full of clothes, sheets, and miscellaneous items that are arranged in long rows. The experience may be intimidating at first, but once you delve into it, shopping at the Outlet becomes invigorating and may force you to learn more about your own unique style.

Really though, the Goodwill Outlet is accessible, affordable, and awesome. Bring a friend and check it out.
After the shopping bliss at the Outlet, Rizelle and I decided to grab something to eat. We wanted something local, semi-affordable, delicious, and (semi) fast. The winner? Southern Kitchen (http://southernkitchen-tacoma.com). This restaurant has been featured on the Food Network program, “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives,” and it felt like we traveled to some small-town eatery in the South. Fried chicken, catfish, collard greens, and cornbread overwhelmed the menu (and don’t forget the award-winning strawberry lemonade to wash it all down). It’s the kind of food you want after a long and cold winter day that puts you right to sleep. With the end of the semester looming, it seemed appropriate. The entire experience was perfectly crafted, intentionally local, and competently kitschy. And yeah, I was so hungry and the food was so lip-smackin’ good that I failed to take any photos of our actual meal.

All in all, the excursion was a success. My overall philosophy on style (and in life)? Be open-minded.
~ Oh, and keep an eye out for a follow-up DIY cut-off shorts post soon from a pair of black high-waisted jeans I purchased at the Outlet. ~

LollaPLUza is only seven days away and everyone should start getting excited. We have artists from local Seattle rapper, Sol, all the way to Missoula’s best j.sherri. Among these artists, we also have Pacific Lutheran University student Asia B. Wolfe performing with her Bad Gurls and let me tell you their bad in the best way possible. I was fortunate to ask Asia a few questions and have her share the deets.
ZK: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
AW: “I love hip hop and RnB from the golden age…or 1995- around 2006. Think Aaliyah, Ciara, Brandy, Missy Elliot, early JT (Justified), and Gwen Stefani (luv her). Growing up with all of these influences, I have always had a predilection for strong powerful women who have something unique to say.”
ZK: Could you tell me a bit about your music?
AW: “I am a firm believer that all music should have a message, and I strive for my music to relay one of ebullience and carefree innocent fun. I want people to enjoy what they’re listening to, relate to it, and likewise feel so free as to twitch their bootays along to it.”
ZK: What are you most excited about LollaPLUza?
AW: “I am excited to showcase the songwriting skills that I have cultivated these four years in my electronic composition class with Jeff Leisawitz. I am a classically trained pianist and violinist and have been playing both instruments for the past 14 years, so there is a very structured and theory based aesthetic to my music. That being said, I am a sucker for a good fat beat, so the funky aspect should come out as well.”
Prepare to “bootay twitch”, Lutes.

Say hey to Katy White, a first-year at PLU! Katy’s awesome combo of blue hair and her loyal companion Missy made for a perfect Tuesday photo op.
Tumblr media
Katy is wearing: jacket- Forever 21 dress- Kohls boots- Walmart
Tumblr media
Katy is a fan of dresses. When I asked her about her personal style she simply said that her looks are all easy going and comfortable - “the least amount of effort involved, the better.” Curious about Katy’s cool blue hair? It has been an evolution! She first dyed her tips blue because she liked the color and then dyed the rest of her hair because she wanted to mix up her hair color. Props to Katy.
Tumblr media
When it comes to festival wear (LollaPLUza) Katy provides similar advice to her personal style.  “Wear comfortable things that aren’t over the top (we’re in Parkland).”
On behalf of Katy’s personal style - check out this laid back look (featuring a dress) that you can rock at Lolla or in the sun!

By Austin Miller, Lute Looks Music Contributer & LASR DJ Do you like to rock out? Dude York does. The indie/punk/rock trio continue to make noise in the Seattle music scene as they gain praise from the likes of Pitchfork and MTV. Intertwining loud guitar riffs inspired by rock n’ roll of days past with pop-ish lyrics, Dude York prevails in making music for anyone to jam to.
Luckily for us Lutes, Dude York is set to perform on May 9th at LollaPLUza. They will take the main stage at 4:50 PM, right before Sol performs. Expect loud music and a great time!
Check out some of Dude York’s best tunes above!

Influenced by Dude York’s heavy guitar riffs, ripped tights, and walking through the city, these looks capture life’s grungy moments. Channel your inner rock with high waisted jeans, red lips, brunch socks, high heeled jelly shoes, and jorts.
