Painting tutorial ft. this malevolent summer sprite

@clefableii here is a tutorial on how I try my very best to make monochromatic digital painting not look like ass :'^)

TBH I don't actually think this is a good method if you are hoping to work with bright colors, but I like it for painting ppl since it works fine on skin tones (but as you can see on his clown coat, the colors look kinda drab).

If anything it's a good method for working out the major shapes & lighting so long as you complete the final lap by painting over it in color

Also, I cannot guarantee that Soft Light is the way to go, since literally every other portrait I did before this (+ my torso study) used Overlay, but then that looked like garbage?? So idk just flip through em all until one of them looks like a good jumping off point :^)

did some "torso studies" for the pure, artistic thrill of it. sure. 😏

the biggest lesson i didn't learn was deciding before hand NOT to worry about painting the hands, and each time it got down to it, it ended up looking weird?? who coulda predicted that!

Honestly, I am always very taken aback and then absolutely melted (in a good way) any time someone compliments the expressions 😭 I've always leaned more toward realism in my art, and while I've never not made silly comics, exaggerating expressions and action/movement are a lot less intuitive to me

Which of course means my method looks like: draw > undo > draw > undo > draw > undo > draw > undo > draw > undo > draw > undo > draw > success 😈

My second secret is that the attempts I make to cover up difficulties (& the occasional laziness) usually lead to unexpected and often more interesting results 😏
