hearing rumors that AI generated weak hero fics are on the rise... it's sad to see how far the community has fallen

i've watched videos about authors plagiarizing fanfiction and AI basing part of its learning off of fan-works — it's irritating! fanfiction is already considered low-brow in some writing spaces, where it's deemed lazy, poor quality, or not "real writing". generating fan-works through ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc. only furthers the narrative that fanfics are not valuable as original works.

there's no rule against AI-generated content on AO3, either. AO3 has implemented a code asking ChatGPT to not source data from their site, but their own TOS states:

At the moment, there is nothing in our Terms of Service that prohibits fanworks that are fully or partly generated with AI tools from being posted to the AO3, if they otherwise qualify as fanworks. ... If fans are using AI to generate fanworks, then our current position is that this is also a type of work that is within our mandate to preserve.

the only reason an AI story would be scrapped from AO3 is when it violates their spam policy, in their words.

you can observe this when searching the AI-generated tags on AO3:

some works have overlapping tags; some tags have 300-500 works alone; some aren't 100% AI, but heavily edited or partly AI-assisted; some are entirely AI-generated. regardless, all these works are not original, since the AI systems used (specifically ChatGPT) have already based their writing off of AO3 works and original online content. to use AI "tools" to create fan content is participating in plagiarism, intentional or not.

this creates a big fuckin' problem for AO3 authors. since we can't hold copyright over our fanfictions (because they're still derivative of original works), there's little to be done when people generate stories that cherry-pick parts from our works, then post them to AO3, Wattpad, Tumblr, etc., where genuine fans and readers unknowingly consume them — all of this authorized under AO3's TOS or, really, the lack of a rule against AI-generative content.

AO3's mission to preserve all fan-works is honorable until it starts protecting the rights of people to cheat the system. a person shouldn't be allowed to type an idea into ChatGPT and, in minutes, have a story that can be titled, tagged, and posted onto AO3 under the claim that it's their "original work". some authors don't disclose their use of AI, either, leading to distrust in fandoms.

please be wary of the content you read online, whether on AO3, Tumblr, Wattpad, Fanfiction.net, DeviantArt, etc! @softspiderling has created two amazing guides here and here with tips for identifying AI-generated fanworks.

and to aspiring authors and fans online: keep writing! even if you lack skill, or the right resources, or the best vocab, nothing matters as long you're giving it your best. improvement takes time, that's okay! fanfiction has always been about fun and escapism, not about who churns out the most content or gets the most kudos, because fandoms work best when we are collaborative — not competitive.
