@blackjack-15- Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me. I hope everything turned out well. There aren't too many Metas/ Analyses on Tumblr for Joe and Georgia. I am always interested in reading other people's takes and perspectives on things I enjoy, and don't really like to venture out of the spaces of positivity, so I try to avoid some other platforms/ negative reactions. I am only going to touch on Seasons 1 and 2, because Season 3 deserves its own post. I'd like to also know your thoughts on Georgia's feelings for Joe, throughout seasons 1-2.
More under the cut.
Which leads us to Theory 2, which I have a slight preference for: Once Georgia kills Kenny for molesting Ginny, she finds out she inherits everything in the will, and decides that this is her chance to really set her kids up for a good life. She remembers the rich kids from Wellsbury, MA (aka Joe) and how they seemed to live, and decides that that's where they'll go. Remembering Her Joe, she does some research online and finds out about his cafe and farm, and goes to visit already knowing who he is. Thus, her "I don't know, do you?" is a hint, and she's familiar/friendly with him from the beginning because she knows exactly who he is.
This still fits with what we know of Georgia (she has excellent planning skills, and we know she never forgot about Wellsbury, Joe, or the sunglasses/sandwich via Ginny's mention of it. It means she visits the cafe to both scope out Paul and to meet Joe again, and that she takes care from the very beginning to get Joe back in her life (echoing his statement "you seek me out" from S2). It also makes her statement from when she was 15 true -- "I'll look you up if I'm ever in Wellsbury" -- and begins the series with her thanking him -- not just for the coffee, but for what he gave her when they were kids.
Your second theory is spot on and correct-It was confirmed sometime after season 1, that Georgia looked Joe up, and knew who he was in episode 1x01 ('Do I know you? '; ' I don't know, do you?'). The reason I asked you is because I figured you may not have known, but I didn't want to make an assumption. As for when Joe actually fell in love with Georgia, I'm firmly in the camp that, though the seeds were planted when they were 15 (you can see him trying So Hard to look 'cool' to the pretty girl, which is Adorable), he doesn't actually fall in love with her until part of the way through Season 1. He clearly likes her a lot by 1X03, goes out of his way to show up in a suit to Casino Night just to see her (and show off a little, let's be real), but I think that, rather than a Giant Moment, he's just falling slowly in love with her up to the part where he advises her about Maddie and says 'Family's Family' to her.
He's actively taking an interest, not shying away from a difficult topic, and his eyes in that scene -- those are the eyes of a man in love. I think it's also thematically relevant that (to my eyes) he falls in love with her by an episode where he sees more of her Imperfect side; he's never unaware of Georgia's faults and struggles and 'bad' sides, and he doesn't fall for her because he sees her as a smart piece of arm candy (like Paul), a cute, slightly damaged but spunky girl (like Zion), or an easily-controlled beauty (like Gil). That smile he gives her after they put Maddie down into the bed -- the 'drunken nothing' -- is far, far too soft to come from a man who's not in love with her.
In the same screenshot (posted above), they confirm Joe wasn't in love. He had a crush. I never thought he has been in love with her for 15 years. I don't think there has been enough context to point to him being in love from their first meeting and am not sure why some others feel like that is the case. I think if we were to apply the logic of him naming his horse "Milkshake" as confirmation for him holding a torch or being in love for that long, then the same could be said for Georgia, with her keeping and cherishing the sunglasses, for just as long. I do always wonder though, what it is that he wanted to say to her for so long (1x10).
I agree that he fell for her some time in season 1, and I believe they were interacting a lot more often than what was established on screen. I love that in the episode with Maddie; she doesn't lie or hide the fact that Maddie is her sister. I agree he was feeling deeply, by that point, but only truly knew it was love, when it is confirmed that Georgia is the girl from rest stop (so red string theory coded). I'd like to circle back to the almost kiss. I try to interpret her reaction to it, but I am still sort of confused (I'd like to know your take). She always seems surprised, downplays it, or disregards it, when it is brought to her attention that Joe has a crush or has feelings for her (Maddie, Paul, and Joe specifically).  I don't really know if it is because she thinks of herself as someone (a monster) not worthy of his love. Aside from the Paul/Zion of it all, I wonder if she fell for him too in season 1, but she was either unaware of her feelings or didn’t allow herself to feel anything for him, due to self-sabotage or fear she might destroy him.
The ease in which she interacts with him and how she doesn't put up a façade like she does with the others, is very significant. One of my favorite scenes in season 1 is the "Cheers" one. She comes in, still disheveled, says "hey" in a hushed tone. You can almost see the stress and tension of the day retreat, just by him being in her presence. He then points out that she doesn't look so good, and she proceeds to let down her hair and moves to fix it to look somewhat more presentable, and throughout their interaction he still manages to make her smile. If you compare it to the scene, earlier in the episode with Paul and Nick, you can see the contrast in her reactions/ lack thereof.
Their S2 talk about their pasts and who they are to each other -- unsurprisingly one of my favorite scenes in the show -- I don't think was necessarily ambiguous, but I do agree it doesn't get the focus that I think it deserves in the fandom. Part of that might be that a decent chunk of the fandom is Of An Age where they're more interested in the teens' relationship woes -- which, no offense meant, we've all been that age before -- but also I think it's due to it sharing an episode with, frankly, a whole lot of Chekov's guns going off at once. Of course, that ignores the fact that their conversation is also a gun going off -- one of the biggest -- but if the viewer's focus is Elsewhere, on the mercy killing or on the teenage nonsense going on or anything else, I can see that happening.
Since I am part of the older demographic, I care more about the adult storylines, than the teens', but love all aspects of the show, as a whole. In season 2, I love the small crumbs and scenes they had. I wish there were more, but I understood where their story was heading (slow burn; right person, wrong time). Joe was setting boundaries and distancing himself, like he told her. He was the cause of their limited interactions. It is most likely the reason why I've seen others state that his feelings and their friendship was one sided. Georgia was interested and cared enough to know what was going on with him. She asked him if he was okay, who punched him, and I believe she noticed he was pulling away from her.  When Paul points out Joe's crush it is the first time you see her acknowledge that he does like her. She looks at him, smiles, and maybe just maybe internalizes the possibilities. I included an interpretation of their final scene below.
S2 is full of Georgia -- both consciously and unconsciously -- wanting Joe to catch her out, to know who she is without her having to tell him. To tell him while engaged to another man, while trying to keep her life balanced as it starts to crumble, while she's so worried about Ginny and Austin and everything else -- it's just too much for her at the moment, it exposes her too much; if he figures it out, even with hints from her, it's a clear win without exposing herself, without being so very, very vulnerable. The Christmas scene where she talks about wanting a white horse to run away from all her problems is the biggest, but it's full of her giving little hints and nods -- all the while not knowing that he Knows just who she is. (Side note -- Joe downing the rest of Georgia's drink like a shot at the bachelorette party after she says "I'm gettin married" is one of my favorite moments of his. Comedy + heartbreak.)
I actually never pieced together that she was still actively trying to get him to remember who she is, in season 2. That is a very interesting view, and now that you put it into context, I can see it. I think she was also afraid of what the outcome of him knowing might be, because she was getting married to Paul. Another aspect of their relationship that makes them stand out, is when she shows even the slightest vulnerability, he is always attuned to it. One scene that stands out in season 2, that may get overlooked, because it is so short, is after Ginny's poem debacle, when she goes to pick her up, she tries to hide her hurt behind her smile but fails. He picks up on it and tells her she's just a kid and didn't mean anything by it. (Side note- Haha, I need to rewatch it, because I definitely missed that, and I've seen that scene a few times now lol).
Their talk/fight at the end of S2 is so remarkable to me -- and possibly passed over -- because the two of them speak their own language together. Neither needs to say "you're the girl/boy from the rest stop, and I still remember, and it Means a lot to me", because, possibly to an extent that it might fly over the heads of some viewers, they say it in far fewer words -- "I need to get them out of my possession" "do you know what these are?" "did you? of course you did, there's nothing you don't think of" "i don't know why you kept those; i don't know why you came here" (which is incredibly significant -- the fact that Joe states there that he Knows some part of georgia coming to wellsbury was for him -- he's very much not stupid, he puts things together, and he understands how georgia thinks to a large extent).
He's given up on anything happening -- he very much, as someone who prizes loyalty, does not want to interfere with georgia's wedding or georgia's happiness, or any of it all -- but he, like georgia, has to know: did she ever think of him the way he thinks of her?
the audience knows, of course. and georgia does the thing she's been avoiding for the past season, lays herself just a little bare, a bit vulnerable, a bit open, and says: there's nothin i don't think of
Season 2x09-Their final scene is my favorite of the season. So much was going on, even though it can be interpreted as being too vague. They do speak their own language, but Georgia, at least to me, is cryptic as hell with some of her responses. She displays jealousy (asking about Cynthia and him), doesn't outright deny that she has feelings for him, and he leaves with an inference that she sees/saw him as more than a friend. Joe is reserved, observant, and astute (so relatable to me). That's why he asks her if she feels something for him, because he knows some part of her came there for him. There is a moment where Georgia sort of panics, maybe has a thought that she might lose him (around the time she says, "I thought we were friends" and after he starts moving toward the door). She banks on him remaining in her orbit, even if it is just as her friend. When she is lying in bed, you can see that she is beginning to process what their interaction might mean. She tells Ginny, sometimes love isn't enough. (This moment occurs right after her and Joe's scene; that can't be a coincidence, right?).  I also always thought when Ginny tells her Marcus made her feel safe, in the moment, she attributed that to how she feels around Joe; and finally when she tells Marcus, it's noble to let someone who loves you go if you are only going to hurt them, she was not only referring to Paul, she was referring to Joe as well.
Tumblr media
Thanks for @m3lzalz-honeybee-noble for both this wonderful question and for being kind enough to let me screenshot it and answer it separately! Also many apologies for it being like 2 weeks after I said -- I had a mess with a friend's wedding and the fourth of july and etc etc!
With Georgia, it's honestly hard to say -- we know she has to have known by the time she says (quietly) that Joe ended up getting his horses after all -- that's indisputable. Unless and until the show tells us, I have two contrasting theories:
under a cut. for suspense or something
Theory 1: she picks the cafe due to its location (she's only been in town a day, after all), notices him and how he's the right age/etc/etc to be Her Joe, looks him up and confirms it, so that by the time of dragging him into provide meals for the school, she's already certain of his identity.
This fits with what we know of Georgia (she always wants more information), and gives us an on-screen timeline for her coming to that conclusion. It's nice, it's neat, it doesn't take any stretches in canon to fit it in, it's a good, solid theory all the way around.
Can you write more about when you think joe realizes georgia is the georgia. I do think he knows by the time ginny shows him the sunglasses. I think thats more when he lets himself be sure and that that rest stop moment actually meant a lot to georgia too, before that I think hes rationalizing it as a big coincidenze she moved there. Im just not sure when he goes from thats a whole lot of weird coincidenses to omg georgia is that georgia.
i adore this question, nonnie, thanks so much for it!
this is a fascinating question because there is room for personal interpretation. the show is pretty straightforward that georgia knows by the time she asks "you got your horses, huh?" and that joe knows by the time ginny shows him the sunglasses, but there's a Lot of time to play in between those. so much so that i kinda wanna take it scene-by-scene.
under a cut, of course, not to clog up people's dashes/the tag.
i think his first instinct is actually when she shows up at his cafe and says "thanks, joe". it's more obvious on a re-watch, but his subtle double-take before asking if they know each other is sizing up her looks and her accent -- something he's probably done about a billion times before, looking for her in everyone -- to see if she matches Georgia-From-The-Rest-Stop. also significant is when she's pulling the whole "you must get a ton of business from the mayor's office" disarming small talk routine (and it is a routine -- she's scoping for info without seeming to ask questions), joe doesn't get distracted or fall for it, he just responds "yeah, and you are?" in a Much sharper voice. he knows what she's doing immediately; as we follow him through the series, we learn that he sees it because this us how joe gets info as well. their similarities are cinched in the "i appreciate a good scam/right back at you" (as well as him flirting a bit there). over and over again in this scene it's shown he can see through her -- that he understands her. this is the point i think he wonders, even if just briefly, if this is His Georgia.
the scene where she volunteers him for school lunch just puts the cap on this. he never sees georgia as Innocent or Nonthreatening or Stupid, not even for a second.
he knows and understands her well enough that in their brief scene after ginny shoplifts, when this sweet, friendly bombshell sings his name with a smile, his reaction is "oh no". he's well into liking her by this point (after 2 episodes of watching her be conniving and duplicitous! he's down Bad!), and that's part of why he agrees to let ginny work for him, but i firmly believe that it's 1) he saw how Pissed she was at ginny, which yeah, rightly so and 2) because it guarantees georgia's gonna be around, and he may be able to find out more (to see if she's who she Could Be) if she is.
then we're at 1X03 (girl you will ALWAYS be famous) and him asking/quasi-demanding her help passing out wraps (despite the fact that he seems to have it handled, but you Know she wheedled him into catering part of it), with the repeat of the "don't cry over spilled condiments"/"i'll cry if i damn want to" -- the next Big hint, and one of three times (1X01's meeting, this one, and the "you got your horses" scene) georgia actually Hints to him who she is. you can see him start to smile Big -- like his brain is going THIS IS GEORGIA THIS IS HER -- and he physically shakes himself out of it and answers with "...okay." because he's thrown So Far off balance. here's the point where i think joe isn't just considering it, but actively looking for confirmation that she's who he thinks she is. note that, in another similarity to georgia, he doesn't come right out and ask; that would show his hand, and he's not about to show his hand until he Has to. it takes him a second to reply, but his "okay" is certain by the end of it. he's made a decision or a supposition here, turned a page. she thanks him, and he says "yeah", and watches as she goes. he's Paying Attention now.
onto the next ep where we have a few fabulous scenes. joe steering georgia away from the nice-off with cynthia is a Personal Favorite, as is his nonchalance when she pours herself wine at the bar and his laugh when she insults cynthia -- the show is Not Shy about showing that joe is not as "nice" or "innocent" as others (including some viewers) think. he "talks to her like she's a horse", calling out that she's legitimately stressed and a bit scared ("you're bein' skittish" -- an unconscious and subtle adoption of her accent/dialect), and she gives that Hint (which seems to be 99% unconscious) of "finally got your horses, huh?". once again he gives her a look, dancing around the subject in the same way she is, and gives a test right back to her, telling her his horses' names, and when she asks about milkshake, says "yeah, what about it?" faux-casual, dropping eye contact. she blinks first, saying "nothin'", and he chooses to let it drop. it's a small scene -- and often overshadowed by her (a little too "casually", judging from the way she says it and then runs out the door, missing his answering grin/smirk) telling him he'd look good in a suit, prompting him to show up in a suit (and resulting in her checking him out obviously from head to toe and helping her save casino night), because it's Squee-worthy and delicious, but for me, this is The scene for them in Season 1 -- and, maybe controversially, this is when he decides that she's v likely His Georgia.
because after this, the way he treats georgia changes -- in some ways subtly, i'll grant, but Definitively.
he shows up to flirt with her at casino night, gives in immediately to auctioning off a dinner for two at his farm (and teases her with the "you know you've got this bad habit of taking away my money?" "you want my car? my atm pin?" -- he's flirting hard there, as well as challenging her, hinting why he's doing this -- "it's for the school, right?"). he laughs at her about Fallfest the next episode, ("i've never seen you clueless before. it's Cute." -- flirting hard again, because joe is quiet, joe is cautious, but joe is not shy, not in the least. she flirts back "you know what would be real cute? ("Mm?") you bringing us more wine. that would be real cute. like, downright Adorable" -- and she's flirting with a little bit of her Claws showing, instinctively and unconsciously grasping that he wouldn't mind it, and boy does he not -- that clench of his jaw is the "i'm turned on in public" clench (seriously, go rewatch it, it's the horniest face of the season, and that's Saying Something), make no mistake. it's why he reacts stone-faced to her attempting to resurrect the "joke" when she's on her date with paul -- that would be Exposing Himself, and joe doesn't do that, not in public especially, and not around paul specifically, who he seems to not overly care for. if i had to Invent a Bit of Fanon, i would guess that paul wasn't super nice to joe when they were growing up, given the way he holds him at arms-length, but that's full speculation, so grain of salt, etc etc.
especially since the next scene where they're 'alone' again (even in public), he's back to good-natured teasing and offering his opinion.
much as i (rightfully!) despise her, i will always love maddie immediately calling out that joe likes georgia, georgia not even letting herself Consider it, and being stone-faced-serious about shutting maddie up when she starts asking if she'd sleep with him (because she's not gonna let herself Consider the answer). the writers are careful to keep bringing up joe romantically in relation to georgia, even though it flies under the radar of the town a bit. he's more than willing to dance with her, grinning as they sway, making her laugh. and while it's well within the bounds of friend/responsible bar owner to take the girls home, the absolutely fascinating, illustrative thing to me is not his smile when she sways into him up in her room, but the way that, when she realizes what she's doing and frowns, he plasters on a mask as quick as we've ever seen georgia herself do it.
the look joe gives paul there -- that dismissive smile when he says he was just leaving, the way he barely moves his shoulder so he doesn't body-check him in the doorway, the glance behind as he leaves -- is, for lack of a better term, the look one man gives another when he full on does not see him as a 'threat', or even an equal. this is the mayor, ostensibly georgia's boyfriend, and he's dismissive. once again, joe is not without his teeth.
it's not quite a 'your wife wanted to f//k me in your bed' look but it's not far off. just saying.
and then of course the "drunken nothing" where ellen is Suspicious and georgia desperately wants to make sure they're okay. but it's worth noting georgia remembers it and wants to make it right, because it shows she knows she Did Something, that it was Her swaying into him. significant.
next is the "roleplay" scene, where we get a hint towards joe's loyalty thing ("would you rather be diane?" "diane abandoned the show, so no") and also joe bringing back the 'cute' thing from earlier ("am i sam in this cute little roleplay?"). of note to younger viewers of the show, Sam and Diane (of Cheers) are one of the most famous TV couples of all time. just saying. this one, as the last of their scenes before the Sunglasses Moment, where it's proven beyond a doubt that she's His Georgia, is also a favorite of mine; he asks if she's okay, knows immediately how she'll react to that, slips just slightly ("..compared to how you always -- you usually look, which is...amazing"), and knows she's gonna chug the (nice) wine moments before she does it.
And then, of course, there's the Sunglasses Reveal, and the house of cards falls, and joe never recovers, and we have that Glorious scene in season two:
"of course you knew. there's nothing you don't think of."

TWOL 1x04
Thoughts continued…
I keep coming back to this moment. It broke me to my core. Anyone who has lost someone, knows the darkness, knows the death of the world you once knew, the loss of the person you once were. The more time passes, the more the memories of them disappear, and it all becomes a blur. They can be in your dreams one moment and gone the next. Time and circumstance steal and dissipate the connection you once had. It makes you feel like you’ve lost them over and over again.
You find yourself searching for them in other people, places, or things. You temporarily win the battle with your internal thoughts, feelings, and disconnection, by finding solace and peace in these lifelines. They help us to live, to survive another day, without them. It can absolutely destroy you if there is nothing left to hold on to❤️‍🩹.
When Michonne put Carl back in Ricks’s hands, she literally breathed new life into him. She gave him a connection, a lifeline for him to hold on to. I felt this! I know this!! It encapsulates grief/ loss so well. Beautifully written and acted! ♥️

This article was a very interesting read. Anyone else spiraling and wondering in which episodes or moments in season 1 and 2 the writers’ minds went straight to… and Tim And Lucy kiss?
To kill time, if anyone wants to participate and offer their thoughts or ideas, please feel free to comment here, reblog, or create your own posts. You can tag me it you wish.
These may require some more thought and analysis, but here are some that come to mind for me:
Season 1: This is so hard, because there are so many tension filled scenes, but Tim and Lucy were just getting to know each other, Lucy was getting over her situationship with Nolan, and Season 1 Tim would NEVER. I couldn’t really think of a moment or scene that could’ve led straight to a kiss, but maybe the episode as a whole:
1x07 (Lucy confronts Tim outside of Isabel’s). I know, definitely too soon, but that tension and angst between them in that moment… GAH 🤤. You can’t convince me there wasnt a shift.
1x11 (Lucy gets stuck with a used needle; Thank you! For What? Doing my job?). If Lucy was as bold and confident then as she was in episodes 4x22 and 5x01, she would have sought comfort from Tim by kissing him.
1x14 (Plain Clothes Day)- The banter, Tim in plain clothes 😍, Tim’s discreet protection, loyalty and trust. I wouldn’t have blamed Lucy. I probably would have skipped her in line.
1x18 (Chenford paintball date)- their first unofficial date. A trophy kiss for their Team winning.
1x20 (Tim gets infected with deadly virus)- nothing like a NDE (Near Death Experience; any OA fans out there?), and fear of death, to put things in perspective. Their mutual comfort was chef’s kiss. The closed door being a literal barrier between them. Their last looks at each other, like no one else was in the room (a callback for episodes 5x03-5x04). I could see them running to each other embracing and kissing, a la Sydney and Vaughn (Alias).
Season 2: Oh this one was definitely much more easy. There are so many. This post is getting too long, so I’ll just name 6. I can do a part 2, for second half of the season
2x01 (Lucy confronts Tim about his mistreatment of her so far along; suicide ideation) - Lucy is at her best when she is assertive and stands her ground (🔥) -I could see a Tim apology that leads to a confession and 😘
2x02-(Lucy records audiobook for Tim): the time and thought Lucy put in, on top of the 8-12hr work shifts. That alone warranted a kiss of gratitude. Bonus: Tim was breathing, sleeping, eating, showering, exercising, and working with Lucy’s voice in his head, 24hrs a day. Some say he still listens to the audiobook, you know as a refresher course to being Sergeant 👀
2x03: (betting Lucy couldn’t find a partner for Tim; Lucy’s short sleeves victory): The flirting and invasion of each other’s personal space (boundaries non existent). 📢GET A ROOM📢
2x06 (missile crisis, end of the world): they chose to spend their last moments on earth with each other. Let’s end it with a kiss.
2x08 (Tim wouldn’t have gotten that stupid plaque if Lucy didn’t have his back; Thank you! For What? Doing my job? Part 2): She saved his picture on her Lock Screen! The first thing she sees when she goes to unlock her phone. They breathe each other’s air on that bench. Tim leaned in to her, while drinking his beer. Just kiss her!
2x10 (Introduction of Rosalind Dyer; Lucy meets acolyte Caleb): if Tim had offered to take Lucy out for that drink with another human, the sequence of events that followed never would have occurred, and the night would have ended with a kiss.
2x11 (Lucy’s Rebirth/ Reawakening )- including this because technically there was a kiss. A kiss of life. I could also see their hospital scene ending with a kiss if they weren’t interrupted and talked a little more.
2x12 (Tim keeps tabs on Lucy and gives Lucy her ring back): Both scenes had so many unspoken feelings/ unresolved, good tension. I can imagine if they hugged, it would have ended with 2 kisses.
Bonus: I won’t elaborate, that is unless you are not over this post and care to know more
Season 3:
3x06 (Lucy goes undercover as Nova, the first time)
3x09 (Lucy “fake” feelings confession, and Tim, heart eyes 😍, will miss riding with Lucy)
3x14 (Lucy undercover as Nova Part 2; Tim asks Lucy to Save him a Dance)
Season 4: Before 4x22
4x01: (Their first on screen HUG)
4x07: (first undercover together (please correct me if I’m wrong); Lucy 🎤 Tim up with wandering eyes, all the way down and up)
4x09 (Tim’s day of validation/ reflection/ retribution/ and Lucy’s Hug of Life)
4x12 (Lucy and Tim’s Date with 3rd and 4th wheel, Chrispy and Ashy; Personal Space, into the VOID you go)
4x18 (The collection of a debt that was owed… THE DANCE)
Season 5: Manifesting First REAL Kiss:
5x08 (Lucy and Tim riding together again for the first time, after a long hiatus, pun intended)

I have to say I love all of Chenford’s parallels and call backs. I am curious to know, what are some of or your most favorite parallels and callbacks.
P.S. I find it so funny the writers have no issues doing parallels and callbacks, for most plot lines, but can’t seem to get a handle on the disaster, that is the Jeremy Bearimy Timeline. I think it’s a running joke in the writers room, at this point.

Random 5x05 thoughts (I know I’m Late to the celebration)
- Regarding Ashy and Tim’s Breakup (Good Riddance)
Ashy breaking up with Tim
My first thoughts were against Ashy breaking it off with Tim, but now I have come to accept that it was her, and I’m not mad at it. It’s finally done. I have seen many different perspectives and all are valid. Just thought I’d offer my take.
Ashy was either really oblivious or so narcissistic that she didn’t see Lucy as a threat. I mean, the signs have blatantly been there since the beginning. Not sure how she missed them. To be fair , we didn’t get enough background on her, in order to confirm or deny Lucy factored into her reasoning for breaking up with Tim. Her actual, displayed reasoning for the breakup was out of left field, and I had the same initial thoughts as some others, why date a cop in the first place, if you couldn’t handle being with one long term. After some thought, I came up with something that I haven’t seen discussed here yet. Now, I am not making any excuses for her, and the cold way she ended things, but I am trying to make sense of the breakup on her end. I think that maybe Tim being hurt and going into emergency surgery, may have triggered repressed, childhood trauma, regarding her dad. Our reactions/ responses to trauma/ reliving trauma, can sometimes be irrational and spontaneous. That trigger may have sent her into a tailspin, hence her talking about retirement, and not allowing time to pass before ending their relationship. She didn’t want to relive those feelings she and her mother went through when she was a child.
Tim Not being the one to break up with Ashy
I am curious and forgive me for maybe missing something, because I only rewatch Chenford scenes, but when did Tim ever reference or say that it would be an end all, be all (Dealbreaker), in his relationship, if his significant other did not want to marry or have kids? I only remember him saying that he thought he’d have kids by now, and he and Isabel talked about it. He did express surprise/ a little disappointment when Ashy revealed she didn’t want that, but I thought it was because most people are shocked/ surprised/ a little disappointed when a woman expresses that sentiment, as if it is taboo. I personally don’t think that was a main factor or reasoning to end his relationship with her, unless it is still what he really wants.
The main factor(s) that should have had him end that relationship, is the emotional and almost physical cheating with Lucy. Also, how Ashy was subtly manipulating him to conform to her wants and needs, instead of allowing him to be himself, with a little compromise. It also seems, to me at least, Tim was still very much of the mindset that he was in the early stages of dating, and they weren’t as exclusive to him, as they were to her. She said she loves him 🤮; he didn’t say it back. On screen canon tells me that he doesn’t love her. He also told Angela he’s dating Ashley in 5x01, even though he’s called her his GF, other times. (When is dating no longer dating? How long have they even been together, a year? Aaron finished his FTO program in that time. Isn’t it 18 months altogether?)
Was it fair for Tim to lead Ashy on? No, but he probably looked at their relationship, as a safety net, and because he didn’t follow through with the physical cheating, he most likely thought he could focus all his energy/efforts in his relationship with her, grow to love her, and get over his burgeoning feelings for Lucy. I don’t think him not ending things with Ashy, means he doesn’t have feelings for/ love Lucy. To him, Lucy has already moved on, with Chrispy. Logically, why forfeit any chance at potentially being happy? A lot of people settle, when they can’t be with the one they truly love. Yes, he is a man of honor, and what he was doing is quite the opposite of being honorable, but sometimes honorable people can have lapses in judgement, and make mistakes, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. That’s an internal struggle he could be dealing with/ trying to rationalize, under the surface. We won’t know, until it is said aloud, if ever.
Side note: Just thinking about why Tim was outlandishly considering retirement, and the only reasoning I can come up with, aside from him humoring Ashy, was that he was also factoring in a potential solution to the superior/senior officer roadblock that is preventing him from being with Lucy. 👀
I loved this episode and have many thoughts, about it. I’ll prob make another post solely about Lucy and Tim❤️. This is too long. Thank you for sticking with me til the end if you made it this far.

When Lucy comes through for Tim in MORE WAYS THAN ONE, he’s finally going to get the confirmation he needs. What she feels is more than “basic biology”, and he’ll break up with Ashley.
