It made me unexpectedly emotional to see Yoshiki dive in front of "Hikaru" to protect him from the wrath of a fellow human.

The not-Hikaru is technically the monster here; he's the imposter, the cosmic unknown; a lethal force of nature that transcends life, death, and rebirth.

Yet when Old Man Takeda lashes out at him, charging him with crimes he does not yet understand, it is Yoshiki who steps in, who physically shields him with his body. "Hikaru's" distress upsets Yoshiki so acutely that he forgets any boundaries of his own as he attempts to de-escalate the situation.

Once "Hikaru" confirms that an impurity is already inside Takeda—revealing that this is now a threat on a scale beyond Yoshiki's help—he still stays firmly planted in front of "Hikaru." Even though he has no idea what to do in the face of this new danger, he pushes the not-Hikaru behind him.

The fact that Yoshiki's body language did not change, even after the aggressor changed from a human to an evil spirit, says more than he likely realizes.

Something happened to Hikaru between “Oh, one of them Ell Jee Bee Tee folks?” and “Pfft! Gross!”

As a kid, Hikaru had a much more accepting and modern understanding of gay people than Yoshiki did. Yoshiki calls Yuusuke “dōseiaisha”, which was used in academic studies in the 1920’s as a translation of homosexual - around the same era of Western sexology using ‘sexual invert’ to describe gay people. He didn’t say ‘gay’, he said ‘homosexual’, which I find in my personal use to be clunky and old fashioned. The way he uses such a word from sexology books from like a century ago, it’s like he’s trying to distance himself from Yuusuke.

Hikaru just uses the whole acronym, which makes me wonder where he heard it from. Possibly the Internet? And he had no issue with it. Immediately after they discuss Yuusuke, he says that Yoshiki should come to his place and that “whenever you feel like you wanna go to the city, you should come to my place”.

Do you ever remember when you were a mostly prepubescent kid, and you would learn about LGBT stuff because you thought it was interesting, but for whatever reason you didn’t think you’d ever be apart of something like that? And you just thought you were ‘an ally’? Especially if you had a friend who was brave enough to come out to you or who you thought was closeted. I remember that, it felt like my brain was trying to foreshadow something that I hadn’t developed yet.

Then a little later, something changed. By now he knows that Yoshiki will leave and he will be obligated to say behind, so he projects his fear of Yoshiki leaving onto him. There’s also a big difference in Yoshiki’s memory of this occurrence - one how it actually happened and the other how he interpreted it.

Hikaru got very girlcrazy (like having a crush on a different girl he barely spoke to every other week) and would try to figure out who Yoshiki liked. When Hikaru says Yoshiki could get a girlfriend, he’s face is turned away, which Yoshiki recalls on a separate occasion when he remembers how much of a liar Hikaru was and that he often concealed how he really felt.

I remember having best friends like this I was so intensely attached to. I never wanted to be separated from them, or I wanted to consume them into my life, and that I didn’t want them to date other people, but play it off like it was something purely familial - but if I acted the same way towards my biological siblings it would be very inappropriate.
