Recently added a VERY important album to my collection. Black on Both Sides was the third rap album I ever loved—I got into rap slowly at 17, then took a big plunge into it in my first year of college. Mos Def was part of that early trickle, an artist who more or less explained the genre to me. I had this cd in my car cooonstantly throughout senior year. It’s got some great commercial hits, and the music is incredible throughout, but its biggest strength (and what opened my teenage eyes) is its unflinching, nuanced depictions of Blackness and anti-Black racism. It was an educational experience then, and when I listen now, I hear all sorts of messages I’ve only internalized in the last couple years but that he apparently told me back in 2006. Mos always has more to teach to those ready to listen🔥🔥
