the amount of thoughts and feelings i have for this line, you guys. like, this is genuinely one of the most romantic things you could possibly tell someone imho, especially given how morally complex of a character guo chengyu is 😭✋

it makes sense why there are people who like to argue that chengyu is not a green flag, and tbh, these people aren't entirely wrong. at his core, chengyu doesn't give a fuck about what's right, wrong, fair, or unfair. he places his money exactly where his heart is and is unbothered by the idea of playing dirty if it's for the sake of the people he cares about, regardless whether or not they're in the right or wrong.

like pls, this is the guy who basically pimped his own guys to his best friend, hoping it'd help him deal with his breakup. this is also the same guy who bypassed authorities and brought punishment unto his love interest's offender himself. and he's also the same guy who hit another man with a bottle behind the head without context just bc he's about to throw a fist at his best friend even though it's his best friend who started throwing hands.

chengyu is quite rather self-indulgent, knows himself to be such, and isn't one bit sorry about it.

just that, on the flip side of it all, if you somehow make it among the list of people he genuinely likes and cares about, then goddamn, congratulations. you've just won the life lottery. because making you happy and keeping you safe and content will equate to making himself feel happy, you're guaranteed to be spoiled for life, as can easily be seen by how much he dotes on chi cheng and jiang xiaoshuai.

all these said, yeah. i personally wouldn't call chengyu a selfless guy, but i think that's the whole beauty of how his relationship with xiaoshuai came to be and the quoted line above.

chengyu isn't selfless. but he's self-aware to the point that i'd say he has a quite rather healthy relationship with his self-indulgence and other core traits. and i just think that in a world that usually tries to push the narrative that finding love will make you better, it's quite rather refreshing to encounter a guo chengyu whose actions and words instead say, "nah. whether you become better or worse is up to you. you don't even have to change at all. but all the same, the love i offer is here to accept you."

and only a character who's so secure in his own self and feelings like guo chengyu can pull off a promise like this, and i just love this so much for jiang xiaoshuai who's been through so much, but still wants to choose warmth and kindness despite all.

i love that he found a person who's just as aware of how cruel and unfair the world can be, but instead of telling him to be tougher, stronger, and rougher so that he doesn't have to see him hurt, his person, instead, assures him, confident and capable:

"yeah, no. you can and you should stay true to yourself, because just by being myself, too, i can protect you."

Chi Cheng knowing just how much Wei Wei went through mentally while he was in jail and knowing he wants and needs a long, good sleep where he's no longer afraid, because Chi Cheng is finally right there in bed with him

The only criticism I have is that they should have at least included the scene of CC and WSW visiting the grave of WSW's parents together or, even better, ended the show with it, but other than that it was truly a wonderful series and I had the time of my life watching it! I'm gonna deeply miss both the characters and the fandom experience. It was such a fun ride!

Absolutely losing my mind over, how Chengyu looks at him full of worry and gets him. He can't do much for Wu Suowei except communicate between him and Chi Cheng and cook him food and be working his ass off to get his boyfriend out.

But he is always checking in on him and not just through Xiaoshuai.
