Clo Sphinxes: Habitat Notes

The society of sphinxes in clo culture are a mystery people with a protected culture. It is a defined law that they are not to be disturbed under any circumstances. Still it doesn’t seem to stop people from trying to find them and interact with the mythical and goddess like creatures.

They live in the Falling Isles. It’s a cluster of tight and various sized islands that for some reason remain close to one another. Though they still tend to shift and bounce around a bit in high weather.

The islands are small pockets of paradise, large and numerous collective of floating land that make up a small city in the sky. Clouds always circle  and lurk close with the isles. Water seems to flow endlessly from the springs inside of the islands. Waterfalls pour off of the islands. Sometimes the water reaches the oceans or cliffs below. But usually they mystify mid air on nice days helping create the eerie mist that protects the isles.

All creatures that live here were either living there before the land began to move and are ancient species that no longer exist on the natural world below. Other species are imported by the extremely rare travelers. Otherwise the only creatures that manage to truly survive here must have wings or the capabilities to fly island to island.

[8:20]   making them susceptible to training and becoming pets

[8:21]   But also have enough sense that they wouldn't sacrifice themselves based on being friendly with humans

[8:21]   so they have self survival instincts

[8:22]   so the company is the one who funded and rebranded pillowings to be expert hunters of lintlings

[8:23]   but dolly is the one who still helps promote healthy positive magic and that makes pillowings go either hunt mode or friend mode

[8:23]   I don't think any regular person can rehabilitate a corrupted pillowing.

[8:24]   Maybe a fresh/newer on in it's first few months to year? But after that it would be so imbue with negative magic artifacts/residue it would just have to be burned. If you ever caught Luther, he needs to be burned and purse the residue.

[8:25]   Dolly would be a great candidate for helping with a rehabilitated pillowing

[8:25]   But she has never completed the task

[8:25]   but I bet there would be just as equally amazing artisans/magicians who might take the time to help and do it. VERY taxing and takes months to years even then the rehab only does so much.

note to self; for my SA Aodh character I think I was a very self indulgent male (species undetermined, thinking possibly pegasus?) who lived with his single father. He didn’t find out until his early 20′s that he was an accidental happening and his mother was a slave of their household. Soon as she gave birth to him his father sold/got rid of her and this news drove the character into a self destructive spiral of first trying desperately to find more or ANY information about her or where she went. He’s desperate to meet her for ??? reasons. But when everything is dead ends and his father is a steel trap with any further info, he begins indulging in self destructive activities like drinking, gambling, too much partying, flirting (surprisingly enough not sex though?), and just getting too rowdy. Possibly thrown out of his family home? Couch surfing off his other wealthy friends who enjoy his company and ridiculous ways? Just thoughts.

In the kings forest where the cerifae live there is a gigantic swamp swine that looks like he’s made of moss and stone called goliath. Try drawing later.

Finally getting the idea down for Swamp Swine - they’ll need a new name, that’s just the slang I use for them. Just great guzzling beasts, did some studies on Boars, Pigs, Warthogs, Alligators, Komodo Dragons, and “Galloping Crocodile Dinosaurs??” to find the right fits for their fatty yet muscular bodies.

These beast are not really tameable, they tend to eat everything they can sink their teeth into. Their biggest source of prey are Slickers. Their great heaving claws are perfect for digging up hidden nests to feast on. They can’t keep up with how fast slickers are and the fact they can leap/climb into trees. But if they’re determined enough they will fell entire trees to get at their prey. They hear pretty well but their ears are easily damaged so it’s not very reliable for them. They are near sighted which isn’t very helpful in hunting, they almost entirely rely on their sense of smell or water vibrations when submerged. They are quick on land but terrifyingly fast in the water. Either way do not approach… It is likely to outrun you and if it gets it’s weight on you, you’re not getting away.

They tend to live either alone or in pairs. They are normally extremely territorial and wouldn’t hesitate to attack or devour their own kind. They only ever seem to commune for breeding seasons. They are extremely loyal and devoted parents who care for their young until they have grown just large enough to start hunting for themselves regularly. At this time I’m not entirely sure if I will make them full reptiles - they are a heavy cross of Boar/Gator so they possibly could have fur, flesh, and even live birth traits in their species though I feel it would be pretty rare. They’re naturally heavily scaled - the drawings above have them pretty much naked. They should be quite a bit more fitted with scales like alligators.

I know there will be two distinctive swamp swings, one larger/wider set based on alligators and a narrow and fast lean version after crocodiles. Above is just a base concept which will change and grow as I work on it. Right now I’m assuming this one is alligator based since those were the references I used.

I’m not really planning these creatures to be regular adoptables like I do with pillowings and lintlings who are made to be companion animals. These are just a type of beast that lives in the world of Clo. I might occasionally sell some if I can finalize them more but only after slickers are completed.

This is a concept I’ve been trying to nail down since 2008. I’m glad to see it’s finally evolving after so many years and tying itself together into my world.
