Caleb and Essek being "together for a time" but knowing there is a large discrepancy in their lifespans, knowing there is an axe hanging over Essek's head in both countries, and yet there is this deep, abiding, fathomless love between them.

Caleb never really gets over his guilt, I think, but Essek is his person, his partner, no matter the difficulties. They are together as partners, friends, and whatever else until the end of his days.

And Essek, for his part, loves Caleb for the rest of his own days, and carries Caleb's memory close to his heart all his long life.

Their relationship is deep and profound, intellectual and fast-binding. They love each other forever.
