It was rude of Isaac to wave actual food in front of his face and his stomach growls quietly in response before falling silent. Giving the boy a pointed look, he settles back against the pillows bracing him upright and lets out a slow breath. Somehow he figures that isn't a rhetorical question.
"How do you think?" he murmurs back in response, examining the hunter at his side rather than the food in Isaac's hands. "They say the pain is good. Means everything is healing," the Alpha offers dully. It'd been more a moment where he had stared at the nurse as if she were the one with mild brain damage instead of him.
"Told me I should be dead."
Isaac glances up, mouth open in greeting but quickly closes it in favor of letting Chris sleep. Remember Hogwarts had a motto? Never tickle a sleeping dragon. This is the werewolf-hunter equivalent.
With a nod and a small quirk of the lips in greeting, he drops down in his usual chair, bag on his lap as he starts taking out food.
The bag with Chris’ he sets aside, only after waving it in front of Derek. “How are you feeling?” He whispers.

It's a relief to see Isaac walking in. There's no better way to put it really and though he had hoped that Stiles perhaps even Scott (though even he isn't drugged enough to figure the boy would come, hell he isn't even sure the kid cares) was with him it's good just to see the Beta in one piece. However this doesn't change the fact that he looks close to falling over in exhaustion.
Bringing a finger to the mask to motion stiffly for the other wolf to be quiet he gestures to the hunter sleeping beside him. Waking Chris up likely wouldn't be a good idea when Derek knew for a fact that the hunter was always armed somehow.
Because Isaac’s promised and Derek can get weird about it and Chris bought him food so he has to repay him somehow, Isaac heads over to the hospital sneaking In n Out in his bag.
It’s a hard life, but someone’s gotta live it. Besides, the day nurses totally like him better. He’s got mad skills yo. Or yknow, stealthy footsteps. Whatever the case, he ends up in Derek’s ward again, still yawning a little when he walks in.

Being hospitalized isn't all it's cracked up to be. Food has this awful tendency of not settling well in a stomach that was nearly clean ripped out of a body, the bed begins to feel like a cage, and oh yeah they only have butterscotch pudding.
Derek is coherent but barely just. Pain is more familiar these days than anything else. He feels nauseous with it and can't even stomach the sight of food that they bring in for him. If anything the wolf insists the hunter at his side eat and keep up his strength. Of course it ends with Chris smiling at him, telling him that he's being humored for all of a few spare seconds before the oxygen mask is pulled down and he's being fed. Thank god he is delirious enough from pain medication that his pride doesn't have a chance to be injured.
The Alpha is surprised at how natural this all is with the hunter no less.
Calloused fingers smooth along his temple, soothing the migraine threatening to overwhelm him as he grimaces from it. Until now, Derek hadn't noticed things about Chris. How sometimes the smile didn't reach his eyes and there was a small scar at the skin between thumb and index finger. He brushes across it with his thumb now, watching as the other man dozes off leaned up against the bed with their fingers intertwined upon the sheets between them. Derek doesn't know what time it is, his days have become a blur of awake and restless voids of nightmares.
All he knows is that he can hear his hunter breathing, watch his face so at peace despite how troubled their days are, and he doesn't have the heart to wake him.

"A damn good hunter," Derek breathes out with a rumble of quiet laughter. He's grateful though and despite his concern for Chris he knows the man can easily hold his own should the worse happen. Five wolves in one night put down-- That wasn't good news. It meant the Alphas were no doubt gathering the lone wolves in to control them and build up their pack. Yet he knew that the hunter, his lover, wasn't lying to him.
The wolves who attacked broke the code, the one law keeping them safe from Argent's wrath.
"Deucalion," he rasps, swallowing slightly and finding his mouth as parched as before. "He's their leader...I don't...I don't know what he wants but it...it's not good." Derek shakes his head with a heavily exhaled sigh that hisses softly behind the oxygen mask. There was only so much he could speculate upon when he was given hardly any pieces to go with. He knew it was pointless to spring into action without a plan and they were at a disadvantage. It would take time.
"Promise me." It's hushed, vulnerable, as he meets those blue eyes. The demand is the same he made of Isaac; remain safe. Bandaged fingers brush across a stubbled cheek as brows knit together. Derek pushes himself closer, tugging away the oxygen mask to lean in and steal a soft kiss.
"Promise me," the wolf whispers.
'I can't lose you. I need you,' he doesn't say.
Chris drags his chair over with his foot with ease, settling in it and allowing himself the momentary surprise that he seemed to be perfectly at eye level. Really, the did a wonderful job of having the right chairs, why couldn’t they have better security.
He smiles slightly to Isaac as he leaves before turning his attention back to his bedded lover and finally allows himself to actually breathe. He lets the anger and the panic wash over him and settle deep in his stomach and pull at his heart. If this had happened to Derek, then what was going to happen to the rest of the perfectly innocent wolves here, what would happen to the population of Beacon Hills?
How could he have missed such violent new wolves before now?
“I was in the reserve. There are five… New graves Derek. They all attack. I think I’m more of a target now than any of your Betas. Now they know there’s an actual hunter here.” He chuckles softly, squeezing the hand in his right back.
“He’ll be okay… Because they’re thinking about me.”

At the soft kiss, his eyes fall shut and a subtle grunt of acknowledgement is given. That smile remains even in the slightest at his lips as he feels warm fingers curl with his own. Derek very nearly dozes off then, lulled by their voices and the knowledge that they were here, with him.
But then Isaac is mentioning leaving and though he understands the boy has responsibilities a part of him is selfish. His gaze is level upon the other wolf as he speaks with as stern a note as he can manage, "Don't...let Peter boss you around." It really translated to something closer to concern, more so a quiet request for the boy to be safe while he couldn't protect him.
"Tomorrow," he rasps with something close to a brief smirk. "Hold you to it and Isaac--" Only when he has the boy's attention does Derek draw in a deep breath to speak once more, "Stay out of trouble." Without even thinking his grip is tightening just the slightest upon Chris' hand. Just like that though Isaac is gone and Derek can't help but feel just a bit restless.
Turning stiffly onto his side, the Alpha curls towards the hunter. Glassy eyes watch Chris, exhaustion evident upon his features.
"Say he'll be okay," he whispers breathlessly. "Tell me I'm not...thinking clearly." Because Derek will find a way to force himself up out of the bed and follow Isaac just to make sure that the Alphas won't target his Beta. They wouldn't attack in a public place, he reasons and lets out a rattling breath. There was no way though he would admit to the fear all but evident in his eyes.
He couldn't lose anyone else.
Yes, Issac was there, no he shouldn’t do it, but that doesn’t stop Chris from standing and moving over to the bed, bending enough to press his lips carefully to the Alpha’s forehead before carefully taking Derek’s hand in his.
“I haven’t decided if I’m going to eat it all or most of it before he gets back… Because he is leaving, he’s got a thing to feel and a bed to warm… And I’m late because I had some business. Argents are a protective breed.” He smiles back now, just as gentle as he considers calling in a nurse to help Derek get some water down for that throat of his.
“But I’m here now.”

"As if you need it."
The words are hoarse, more growled than spoken with how raw his throat is. Breath flutters against the oxygen mask worn and glassy eyes regard the two people in the room. Something akin to silent amusement is in his gaze as he spots Chris. He draws in a deep breath, features twisted with pain briefly before he speaks, "I take it...you're here...to relieve Isaac from babysitting."
A tongue darts out to wet parched lips and his gaze slides sluggishly to the Beta. "Or...to hide the pudding from him before he eats it all?" A dry huff of laughter slips coarsely past his lips and the Alpha's eyes fall close once more, unable to stay open at length without growing heavy. Yet Derek opens them all too soon, focusing upon the hunter with something close to a tired smile visible beneath the mask.
"Took...you...long enough...Chris."
“Yeah. I’ll probably stay up too, brought a book after all.” And his gun, but that would be because he doesn’t really trust Hospital security anymore. So with a big stretch he sets his bag down on the floor beside him and shifts the chair again.
“Besides don’t you have a… Thing back at the apartment?”
