Hey so I still see people utterly baffled by how religious fundies (still a majority in America and moreso its senate) react on certain issues so uhhh is it actually not common knowledge what the antichrist is all about? You guys know his defining characteristic is ending war, right? That he’s foretold to unite the world under his leadership by preaching global peace and solving basically every single problem in the world? So you know when you try to talk to these people about equality and togetherness they literally believe that’s what makes you an agent of the devil right???

Okay but unless you take it totally at surface level with such brilliant observations as “those are fuck beats” and remember nothing but the chorus, it also is a song about self-hatred and obsession.

It's crazy how many people use Death of the Author to mean "separating the art from the artist" when it's actually not supposed to have anything to do with who the author is as a person and is supposed to be about the idea that the author's interpretation of their own work should not be seen as the definitive, correct opinion on that work. Like you're not supposed to invoke Death of the Author when JK Rowling devotes her entire life and fortune to transphobia, you're supposed to invoke it when Trent Reznor says Closer by Nine Inch Nails isn't a sex song.

I've seen some posts about the gross way fandom has taken up using "twink," "fruity," etc in pretty blatantly homophobic ways, and in particular as snide "affectionate" insults that are obviously a substitute for the slur they really want to say. I absolutely agree that this is very often what's going on and that it's intensely homophobic (and often gender essentialist and/or transphobic as well), and yes, even when LGBT+ people do it.

But something I've noticed in Star Trek fandom, and not in others I've been in, is that a lot of people just ... don't bother with the euphemisms. To be blunt, I've never seen so many people casually throwing around "faggot" / "faggy" etc in my life, sometimes even for real people. And I don't know if it's because this actually is a wider trend and I'm just not in other fandoms or fandom spaces where it's happening, or if it's more bound up in some kind of dynamic in this fandom that I don't know about.

You’re probably just reading bad books.

As someone who doesn’t read a lot of new releases, I am constantly learning things about what’s trendy in publishing now that horrify me. If a book can truly be read either way - with or without the sex scenes included - then yeah, those are probably not scenes that are done well because they’re not integrated into the story or the characters’ development in any meaningful way.

People saying "spice" instead of "sex" and calling romance "clean" if it has no sex scenes give off absolutely rancid vibes

There are gonna be people who won't like hearing this but if you want to live in a world where mixed marriages, families, and adoptions (particularly POC adopting outside their "race") aren't maligned and discriminated against, then you have got to get more chill about seeing someone partaking in something cultural that you don't think fits the "race" you perceive them as.
