please nobody cancel me for this but anyone up for beta-ing an aged-up unrequited kotaro→mc fic that's mostly navel-gazing and doesn't really go anywhere is about searching for closure? i don't feel like i have a super good grasp on kotaro's voice, esp since the fic is set 8y post-"canon" and he'll be (accordingly) aged up to 20. also i don't really experience attraction so if somebody could double check that for me that'd be great

No see, it makes perfect sense.

Kirito is the delinquent child that needs extra attention (sort of like if you grow up with a sibling that was prone to getting sick, your parents spend more time caring for your sick sibling). Unlike Furufumi and MC, he's a homeless orphan who had been thrown into the trash at birth, and while I don't know what the foster system in Japan is like (irl and in-game), it's implied he basically grew up in the streets by himself. What's worse is that he's supposedly attempted suicide many times before (maybe even during?) the current loop, and may still be actively suicidal.

So faced with a child whose worst traits are being fatalistic and avoidant (and who is slowly but surely taking steps to make connections and reach for a future), a child whose affairs he's explicitly not allowed to interfere in (and who has so many guardians and companions clamouring to pick up the slack for him), vs a homeless and lonely delinquent orphan, one for whom he feels great affinity (due to circumstance? due to loneliness?), it makes perfect sense he'd gravitate towards that last one. Kirito needs someone to keep on eye on him, and Mononobe can at least feel like he's doing something to help.

I have no defense for the prodigies though. He really is a deadbeat dad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He's a Game Master.

Director's commentary because while I was typing out the tags I had a sudden epiphany that I should make it its own thing instead:

They are a person. They aren't their own person. They're a character. They aren't their own character. They are the player's proxy in Housamo the way Shinya is Zeus' proxy in the Game. Do they have agency? Can they even have agency?

Sure, they're (the 24th soul*) presumeably the one making the choices in-game, the one reacting to the consequences, but narratively? Not only are they completely reactive in terms of actions, none of their choices make any difference. None of it matters. This is a game in which choices don't matter. This is also a story in which the MC's choices are predetermined.

Do they make bonds because that's the sort of person MC is? Or because, as Mineaki says, "It's as though your soul is being controlled, manipulating you to form connections with those from all 24 of the worlds"? Do they love the other characters because canonically they are a lonely wyrm whose wish is to no longer be alone, or because LW constructed a way for you the player to love those characters?

Does any of that matter?

An imaginary being loves you despite its lack of realness. It loves you with all of its constructed heart. It was made to love you, by design or not, and it doesn't care whether its feelings are its own, because to it, you are worth all that and more. Does it matter that, at the end of the day, it isn't real?

* arguments to be made whether the 24th soul is a separate "person" from "mc". i don't think so but ymmv.

Sigh. I have this awesome line I love to hell and back because it's basically what I think MC boils down to, distilled into a single sentence, but I don't think it fits anymore. IDK I want to keep it in so much because I think the perspective narrator has the self-awareness to realise it, but also I'm not sure anymore if this is still in character for the narrator??????

Posting it here because it technically still fits the theme of this blog. (Even if it's just my headcanon and not necessarily backed by evidence.)
