Not a history post. But 2002 printing technology seemed to always do people's faces dirty.

letters home from an american marine during the korean war, days before the battle of chosin reservoir
Nov. 18, 1950
I'm sorry that I haven't written for a while. We've been moving so much, that it seems there's no time. I was really happy tonight when I walked in and a fellow said, Are you Burt? I said yes, and he said I had some mail. I went to get it and found that I had 27 letters. It's the first mail I've received since I left Japan...

My darling Betty:
Just a short line sweetheart to say I Love You very much. We left Hamhung this morning and we're enroute to somewhere near the Chosin Reservoir... The weather is getting worse over here. It doesn't get much above zero during the daytime and it's sure miserable. Have you had the baby yet? If so, what's his or her name?...

Hi brown eyes
I said I would write when we got here so here I am. The Battery is right beside the Chosin Reservoir and it's beautiful here, but oh how cold it is... We're supposed to have turkey dinner today with all the trimmings...
---
the battle of chosin reservoir (lake changjin, north korea.) claimed the lives of nearly 2,500 people in the US forces. 5,000 wounded and 8,000 suffered frostbite. it was -54 degrees fahrenheit at the time.
