I think one of the major changes between S1 and S2 that is rarely talked about is how much Cleo allows herself to stand by herself and not fall in the middle of her two friends.

In the season 1 episode "Catch of the Day", and more in-depth in the book based on it, "Fishy Business" (which I just posted!), Cleo often sees herself as very ordinary and compares herself to Emma and Rikki, longing to be as 'amazing' as they are. Emma is so collected, responsible, smart and successful, while Rikki always says what's on her mind, she's confident and funny. And Cleo feels like she's just 'uninteresting' in comparison.

But in season 2, ironically, Cleo starts being the centre of the plot and since a lot of her so her social life revolves around her and her issues (Lewis-Charlotte). I think Cleo starts seeing that whatever she has going on and who she is as a person is more valuable to focus on than comparing herself to her friends, and I think in "The Heat Is On" we can see that she's tired of always being in between them as the mediator rather than having her own solid opinion or POV to contribute. Both Emma and Rikki are two strong minded characters and it takes Cleo a long while to learn she can shine too. Which really plays out in season 3 as she rebalances in the absence of Emma (and the introduction of Bella, who, ironically, is now the middle of Rikki and Cleo.

I'm watch H2O: Just Add Water per @dragonmasterhiccup's recommendation and WOW. It shocked me how fast the show went from "I'm kind of the outcast weirdo that doesn't get invited to things and now I'm even more weird. But I'm going to use my secret mermaid powers to show who's boss!'
