March 30th - closure
In this post I would like to address the seven learning outcomes that we are supposed to meet throughout our activities.
1.  Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
Through the many activities taken up by me, I was able to see that there are things which I am good at, for example the ability to quickly learn using technology such as the electron microscope during my traineeship in MiIZ. Regular training has taught me better time management and planning. I have had problems with writing, and so I have started to produce movie reviews. These are some of my strengths and developments now.
2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Many of the activities I did were something completely new for me. Working with people in the two institutes, starting to work out from scratch, so to speak, being a translator for a group which had some trouble with communicating in English, taking part in a conference.
3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Most of activities require planning. Especially the traineeships at the institutes. Talks with higher ups there were necessary, I had to go through health and safety trainings, sign documents and contracts. Other than that is the CAS project, which required planning, and then realisation of what we have decided.
4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
It has been over a year since I have started to seriously work out. I has had an immense influence on my body and mind. Regularity is what imposes change. But also things like the reviews, or my latest help in AMP Invest teach responsibility, also some kind of drive.
5. Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
This can be mostly seen through the CAS project, as most of the other activities I have completed were based on individual work, with some exceptions. BUt also our try with the HSBC competition, at which we have failed, maybe because of lacking cooperation.
6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
I will begin with my trip to Kenya. It has shown me a part of the world which I have only read about before. Such a visit is truly eye opening. Opens ones mind on to new concepts. But also my interaction with those at the racing track in Hoppegarten. I have helped in establishing relations between institutions participating in the same sport, in different countries.
7. Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
I think this may be mostly seen by the volunteering work I have done. I makes people think, especially when they know that the actions which we complete, we are responsible for, and they will have an impact on us as well as our surrounding. For example when I was completing contracts at MiIZ, or organising data in PIG.
And so my journey with CAS comes to an end. Crazy time it has been. I have definitely learned a lot, and changed throughout the time I have spent in the IB diploma programme.

March 22nd, 2018 - Tomb Raider review
Recently I have seen the latest Tomb Raider movie. This time Lara Croft is played by Alicia Vikander, as opposed to Angelina Jolie, in the previous movies. It is the third movie in this franchise. The character in this film independent, and the story kicks off when Lara learns some information about her missing father. The plot in this film is very much based on the 2013 video game reboot, and follows it closely. Many of the scenes, decisions and situations are pretty much taken form the game. Which makes this movie one of the most faithful video game movie adaptations I have had the chance to see. As a fan of the game, I am ina way happy to see it brought to the big screen so faithfully. One of the biggest positives, is that the character of Lara Croft is portrayed more realistically than ever before. I think that Alicia Vikander honors this character well. Most should be happy with this adaptation. One of the problems in this film is how physics work, or don’t. There are a lot of situations which characters shouldn’t really survive, but this is a Tomb Raider film, based on over the top video games, so it is something that may be ignored. It is an enjoyable action movie. It isn’t a great film, by any means, but it knows what it was supposed to do. It’s just a fun action thriller. Just don’t expect groundbreaking pieces.

March 16th
My results from the doctor came in a couple of days ago. It turns out that I have been lacking in vitamin D. I have started to take medicine to help me with that. And with that sorted, I have returned to regular training. My trainer has suggested a new routine, and I will be sticking with it for now. It is still spilt into upper and lower body,  but now instead of focusing on strength increases, I will be going for a more hypertrophic rep range. Here are the exercises I will perform now. When it comes to upper body: I start with the bench press on an inclined bench, then chest flys, then the so called seal row for the back, after that overhead press with dumbbells, after that curls, next skull-crushers, and finally an exercise for stomach muscles where I raise my legs upwards from a downward position. As far as lower body training goes: I start with front squats, then the Romanian deadlift, next are the Bulgarian squats, then the sumo deadlift, and finally calf raises. The rep range has increased in all of these exercises compared to the previous routines, and so it is tiring, for now at least, as time will pass my body will adapt better.

March 9th, 2018
I have been working with AMP Invest for some time now, since becoming more efficient with the assignments, some more have been coming in. It still isn’t a lot, and quite simple to be honest, but I am glad in a way. It is nice to have a regular responsibility that is not at all connected with school. What I do hasn’t changed since the last time I have been writing about this.

Update on my activities from my first months of IB
It has been brought to my attention that this blog is missing info on some of my first activities. After the voluntary work in September, where I was helping with the Biegnij Warszawo run. At that time I have been mostly arranging and thinking about activities I would like to complete. Around the time of the run, and later, I have been helping out as a translator mostly. First at Hoppegraten, where I have helped the owners of the horse Caccini move around the track and interact with those present there. It was an interesting experience to say the least. All in all, this took place not that long after the year I have spent abroad, so using English wasn’t a problem, the most problematic part I think was to listen to both sides simultaneously, and translate both ways. Nevertheless I think it was a valuable experience. With this event, an interaction between the race track in Warsaw, and the one in Hoppegarten has in a way accelerated. In 2017, I have gone there again, and I have taken part in a conference call, which I have described in one of the previous posts. It is a pleasant feeling, knowing that I have been able to help in exchanging information between the two institutions.
Towards the end of 2016, I have started to talk about my traineeship with MiIZ, all of which can be found throughout this blog.
Around November of 2016, I have gone to a proper gym for the first time, however the newcomer I was, I didn’t do much. I only did some running of some of the machines, and occasionally touched some of the lifting machines. I didn’t touch free weights until March I believe, when I have started to train seriously, and with help from a personal trainer.
Last thing, which has spanned from around October, up until the beginning of January, is again related to translating which I have mentioned in the beginning of this entry. After the first race in Hoppegarten, the owners of the horse were reached out to be an agent, which has been representing a group of buyers from Australia. They were interested in buying the horse. I was the one responsible for translating the correspondence, as well as receiving the emails, writing responses, and interacting with the agent via calls. Being my age, it was a new experience, and one which had some responsibility to it, especially when it came to the live conversations, because when it comes to written mail, I just had to be careful to clearly transfer the messages. The negotiations took a long time, and in the end the horse wasn’t sold.
What I have been up to since the beginning of 2017 is up on this blog.

March 5th, 2018
Tomorrow I am going to go the doctor again to get more blood tests done. I haven’t been able to go back into training for around two weeks now, and I have been told to not go back into the gym until the end of this week at least. With that being said, I’d like to summarise my progress. Almost an entire year has passed since i have started to take working out seriously. I’ve gone from weighing 85 kg to 71 at my lowest, now it is a bit more, around 73 kg, due to a new training programme, which focusses on mass building. Along the way I have faced many challenges. The first one being getting used to attending the gym three times a week. Now that so much time has passed, I feel bad if I miss more than one training session in a week, the way I feel has changed dramatically, I don’t like to brag about this, but I also look considerably better and different. I know that the likes of this are repeated over and over again, but consistency is key. It is also unwise to jump into to the gym and to expect results instantly, without all the work that has to be put in. Another thing gym has taught me is time management, balancing schoolwork, workouts, and meal prepping. It also values patience, but I wouldn’t say I’ve a problem with this before. I am happy that I was able to keep going for such a long time, where now gym has become a crucial part of my day to day life, and is an enjoyable hobby and a habit at once. What is more, I’ve had a lot of satisfaction proving my parents wrong, as they have said that in the long-run I will stop, well so far it’s going well. My thinking about human bodies has also changed. It is amazing how we are able to influence ourselves simply with certain activities and proper food, over time. However with all that being said, the doctor has told me that I may have overdone it a bit lately, especially with the increasing weight. That’s why they have recommended a break. Once I am back to training I will have to get back into it all slowly and carefully. This is a difficult time at school, so I cannot spend anymore time sick.

March 3rd, 2018
The Table Tennis Tournament we have organised has ended yesterday. Overall it was a success. By the end people were coming over to watch the matches and have been talking about the progress. Unfortunately for me, I have been stuck at home sick, after two visits at the doctor’s I have to get some more tests done next week. I have had contact with the guys in school, there weren’t problems as they wnet along. Even though my involvement has been cut short, I am happy to have helped with organising the event. It was nice to see students from different years compete against each other, and with some teachers as well. The sense of competition and community has been visible throughout the event, raising with each day. While I was at school when the tournament has started, I oversaw some matches as a referee alongside at least one more person from us 4. Collaboration definitely made things easier than if there were, let’s say, two of us organising. I am also happy that we have gotten to see out plan through.

February 25th, 2018
The tournament is going on, unfortunately because of me being sick I haven’t been in school since the 20th. Which makes me feel bad because I am unable to help with looking over the matches going on. I’m in contact with the guys, and I know that everything is moving forward. The worst part is that I won’t be back for some more days. But I am certain that Tytus, Michał and Maks will see things through. I’m just unhappy about being unable to help.
Because of my sickness I have had to miss out on a couple of workouts this week, which will also be the case next week. That’s a shame, the progress I’ve been making is good, although I have hurt my wrists at one of the sessions, and had to alter the way I perform exercises, so that i use the neutral grip on the bars, otherwise I am unable to handle the weights, even small ones, like my backpack. I have also decreased the amount of cardio I do after each training. From 10 minutes of intervals split into 40 seconds of low activity and 20 seconds of high activity, and then 20 additional minutes of steady cardio, to 5 minutes of steady cardio, then 5 minutes of intervals, followed by another 5 minutes of steady cardio. So in the end my cardio has been cut in half, from 30 to 15 minutes. My eating has also improved slightly, it’s still not as on point as it was the first 6 or 7 months after I have started.
As far as working for AMP Invest goes, not much has changed here. I still complete similar tasks.

February 19th, 2018 - Black Panther review
Yet another Marvel movie has come out, and since I am fan of this franchise, I have gone to see it. This is the 18th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and honestly speaking one of the best as well. Its story picks up after the events of Captain America: Civil War, and continues to tell the story of T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, whose father was killed, and so now he is to become a king of Wakanda. A well developed country within Africa. Besides being a well made movie, as to be expected form Marvel at this point, it tells a compelling story and has an advantage that many of these comic-book based movies struggle with. Black Panther has a well thought out villain.
T’Challa’s kingship is challenged by Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, and thanks to this the protagonist undergoes a transformation, matures in a way, and by the end of the movie is a much wiser person. We can see how T’Challa grows throughout the duration of the film.
What also makes this movie stand out from the crowd, is that this time Marvel didn’t make just another superhero movie. There is a relevant message behind it. It’s not just about characters fighting, it includes a social commentary. But at the same time, it doesn’t preach to the audience. The movie isn’t giving a lesson, the balance between the delivery of its message and action scenes and things going boom is well established here. This is achieved by having the characters look into themselves, reflect as the movie goes. the self-reflections are achieved through the villain I have mentioned before. Killmonger’s appearance in this universe starts a change for the better, ultimately. Even though Killmonger is a villain, as a viewer you can almost side with his beliefs, as you understand where he’s coming from. This is the best villain in a Marvel movie since Loki was introduced, and Michael B. Jordan gives an amazing, charismatic performance.
The movie has some issues though. At first it is only a superhero movie, it becomes a typical Marvel movie, before it picks up and changes absolutely. There could be more of Killmonger in fact. Some of the scenes are too dark. And from time to time the CGI could have been made better. The final fight has been slightly disappointing.
It is a movie worth commending because of its focus on characters, and not on being a superhero movie.

February 14th, 2018 - TT Tournament has begun
Yesterday the tournament has begun. We have had 4 matches so far. Tomorrow the tournament is going to move forward. We have 30 participants, including teachers, so we are glad even they are getting involved. The tournament has actually gathered quite a crowd around itself. The are more and more people coming to watch, and we hope that the number of viewers will increase.
When it comes to the preparation process, it went well and with no big difficulties. After all those interested have signed up, we drew the pairs for the first round. The signing up itself went well also, because there were four of us involved.

February 3rd, 2018
I have started to help out at a newly established company, AMP Invest. So far my assignments haven’t been challenging. These mainly include paperwork, and management of documents on an website based system. I had to learn how to use said system, although it is pretty clear and easy to navigate through. It allows its user to upload scans of documents and then name them to one’s liking, as well as move around different folders. I am actually enjoying working as a part of a bigger mechanism again. Completing tasks knowing that there are people who will rely on my job adds an additional sense of fulfilment. It also makes me work on my time management a bit more, because now there are additional tasks I have to think about throughout the day. For now these simple will follow, quite possible that once I have worked within the company for a longer time I will entrusted with more demanding works.

January 28th, 2018 - Loving Vincent review
Loving Vincent is a movie made in collaboration by the Polish and the British. It tells the story of Vincent van Gogh, through the eyes of people that knew the artist, the main character is the son of a mailman who delivered Vincent’s letters. The story is told in a compelling way, although I’d say that the movie drags a bit during the first half, and then picks up and continues to be exciting until the end. The most unique part about this film however is its form. This movie is animated, however this is an understatement. Majority of the film was done using stop-motion animation, however, each frame has been painted by hand in a style resembling that of van Gogh. It is truly a treat to look at. My opinion may be a little bit biased, because I am a fan of such animation techniques, but I still believe that even if somebody won’t like the visuals, such a person will at least respect the amount of work that has been put in into this film. Another small issue that I’ve had is that sometimes the lip-syncing was a bit off, but I am not sure whether that was due to the dubbing differences between Polish and English. It is a movie worth watching, if not for its story, strictly for its visuals.

January 22nd, 2018 - planning of the table tennis tournament (CAS project)
Towards the end of our winter holiday we have ( by we i mean myself, Michał S., Maks S., and Tytus S.) met and started to discuss the planning and then realisation of the tournament. We have decided on the number of players, what the rules are to be, how many sets in each match. We are aiming at a maximum of 32 players. In the first round one set will be played, up to 11 points. The number of sets will be increasing as the rounds move on to later stages of the tournament.
It is nice to work collaboratively for once. We can split assignments and get things done swiftly.

January 16th, 2018 - workout description
I have been sticking with my latest workout routine for around a month now, and I’m not predicting any changes to its structure. I am still exercising three times a week, interchangeably working the lower or the upper body.
During the so called “leg days” I perform the following exercises: I start with regular squats, 5 sets, 3 to 5 repetitions depending on how much weight i have to lift, and whether I’m increasing the weight compared to the previous session. Then I move on to Bulgarian squats, 2 series, 6 to 10 reps. Like I’ve described it before, this type of squat has the performer keep on of his legs elevated in the back while squatting on the leg in the front. Next is the Romanian deadlift. I hold the bar in front of me, then I proceed to bend over with my legs almost straight, the weights approach the ground but do not touch it. Three sets of 7 to 10 reps. Then the regular deadlift, in this exercise the bar is resting on the ground, and this is its starting position, as well as the final position. Starting from a low squat, my task is to lift the bar until my legs are straight. 3 sets of 3 to 5 reps. Next are hip thrusts. For this I sit on the floor, my back against a bench. The bar is placed on my waist, the goal is to list it up until there is a right angle in my knees, and my torso and thighs are parallel to the ground. 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps. Finally I workout my calfs.
Here’s what I do for my upper body workouts: I start with the good old bench press. Unlike before, I work on a flat bench. I do 5 sets of 3 to 6 reps. Then I perform bent-over rows, this exercise targets one’s back muscles. I do 3 sets of 5 to 8 reps. Then it’s time for the overhead press. Here I lift the bar from the shoulder level to above my head. This is the exercise I struggle the most with, and the progress I make is much slower when compared to other body parts. 3 sets of 4 to 5 reps. Then chin-ups. The difference between push-ups and chin-ups is in the grip. The former are done with an overhand grip, while the latter with an underhand grip. The difference between these, as far as muscle targeting goes, is that the first one focuses more on the back, while the second one on the bicep. 3 sets of up to 5 reps. Finally I perform dips. I hold myself straight up with my hands, and then lower my body until the angle in my elbows is around 90 degrees. 3 sets of up to 5 reps.
This new routine required me to learn new exercises, like the deadlifts which I have not done before. It is crucial to learn the proper form fro these, because otherwise one’s health may be compromised, especially when the weight pulled is starting to increase significantly. This is what’s the most challenging, especially at first, I have to remember about all the little details to my posture. I am working with weights that require effort, however I don’t overdo it in this department. When it comes to working out, slow and steady wins the race. This is what I have learned and will stick to.

December 30th, 2017 I remember mentioning Vienna once before. Unfortunately this is the only picture I have from that trip, which doesn’t even tell that it’s Vienna, or isn’t about the focus of the trip. I went there because the Kunst Historisches Musem there has had an exhibition of Rubens’ paintings. Oh and what an exhibition it was. The museum has borrowed around 70 additional paintings when preparing this exhibit. It will be going on until the 21st of January, initially I’ve planned to go there at the beginning of our winter break, but my parents have planned a trip to Spain, which made it impossible, and since I didn’t want miss it, we’ve gone there after Christmas. The exhibition was amazing. I’m not going to do into detail on the paintings because I feel like there is no need for that. What I’d rather focus on here are some thoughts. I think it is incredible how a single person is able to leave a legacy behind of such magnitude, it’ll bring together people form different backgrounds. Poland is close Austria, but there were people from America present at the museum. Everyone there was present because they were interested in works of one person. Of course the interests may vary, yet it is fascinating to me how masses can be attracted to specific types of art, not necessarily paintings, this related to music or photography as well. I also believe that expression through art is one of the heights that humanity has reached, and it will bring people together, allowing for discussion.

December 15th, 2017
Yesterday we’ve gone to watch the newest addition to the Star Wars franchise. Overall I liked the movie, however I need a bit more time to think before I write a review about it. I guess that’s because I’ve went into the movie with expectations too high. Demanding more than it’d be capable of delivering.
