when whatching this trailer i notices how they never use a ingame hud for any of the gampley fotage i think that they do this to not take awy from the cinamitc also they way the trailer is structers slowly buildes up with it starting calm and then it ening with a big climatic fight with a giant the music also suports this as it also slowly builds up as the trailer goes on

in this trailer it trys to convay a reall living simulated world that you can seemlesly move around i alos noticed how they perfectly staged setpiece to setpeice useing thing like the rinio which chanrges or the ships spawning in also the music swells in synce with all the actions on screen and the adio has ben enhanced so you can hear every bird and bush move

i noticed this cinamatinc opening is erie and mysteriouse the use of adio makes it feel uneasy as all you hear is the foot steps of the horse but then when the charater get to a bit with lights and puts the other person on a pedistal the music swells with a voiling playing it then has a monolge which for me built intrege to this world and what is going on

fable uses lots of particles in its world and environments but also it uses lots of partials when it comes to its magic system of the game as when you use magic partials go flying everywhere and it is a visual delight to watch you make emeries go flying with different spells

how decals effect games

Splatoon is a game were you got to paint as much of the map as possible to win the game has you play as weird squid kids with paint guns that can color surfaces and allow them to travel up wall by turning into a squid

decals are used basically every where as they use it to paint all the walls and floors with paint in pacific colors the reason they use decals is because if the manually place different objects and images in would be to taxing on the hardware of the switch which it was designed to be on

the main designers of fear wanted to make a gam where the combat felt like a john wo action movie so with lots of destruction and things flying every where so the bullet holes of the game hade to be done using decals as all the developers wanted the player to see the after math of the fight with all the bullets and paper covering the walls this had to be done with decals to stope it being performance heavy to the consoles at the time

creating cinematics in unreal
cinematics are used as a very important tool to make things like cutscenes and trailers in games I wanted to make a cinematic to show of my pizza box in unreal engine
I first right clicked on my content draw to create a level sequence this will be what my cutscene will be

after that i need to enter cutscene view to edit the cutscene this is done by clicking the cutscene icon at the top of the screen

real time animation in unreal
through my research I have discovered that animation takes a lot of time and money you have to load chunks of an animation at a time so basically you would make a chunk of animation that you would be able to see the end product of until you fully render it which could take up to 3 days only to realize that a mistake was made and you have to do it all over again but with unreal Realtime rendering it allows animators to see what their animation looks like live as they are making and tweaking it this allows for them to make animations more easily
a great example of this tecnolagy being used in indersrty is the netflix series love death and robots the series is a collection of diffrent animated short storys all made using unreals real time animation

i also learnt about all the pre planing that they use when making animated stuff such as all the story boarding they use to map out scenes and the consept art they use when desighning characters and how every scene wa pre sketched out so they could visuelize how it would look

don't let the visuals fool you into thinking you cant get immersed in this world the audio for this game is immaculate when you walk on grass you can hear the brushing of grass and the mud squelching under your boot when your in a town you can feel the town in the audio every conversation the children playing it all helps you live in this world despite the fact that it looks like it was on the Gomador 64 and most thing are told through text and environmental landscape audio

how sound influences people
i games sound is a back bone of influencing the player whether you have no music or high octane music will change how a player takes on a challenge and how a player will feel
a great example is safe rooms in resident evil games when you go into a safe room you feel calm and all the tension of being chases goes away as calming melody plays that makes the player feel calm but when you leave tension and foreboding violin plays quietly in the back grounds making the player feel un easy again

another good example are the chest in fortnight as they influence people to go find them for a chance of good loot this is done by the chest constantly emitting a soft vibration sound that makes any fortnight player think of chest and guild the player on wear to find it by following the noise

sound cues are a important tool in games it is used in nearly all games weather its a enemy making a noisy to alert you of their presence a great example is the sound design in thief

I love how thief uses its sound design percificly when it comes to guards and your character foot steps for example in the game each floor makes different sounds when you walk on them so if the player walks on carpet its nearly completely quiet bit tiled floors will echo and make guards investigate the noise i also love how the echo of the noise is dependent on how large the room is so you can put your ear to a door and through the sound of guards talking you can tell how big the room Is
also you can tell when playing the game how strong an enemy is from its foot steps as high value guards wear heavier armorer making a clanky heavy foot step sound
sound can also guild the player directly such as as in lots of games things like healing stations and chests might make a noise especially in open world games where player are likely to walk past them a good example is the chest noise in fortnight which draws players in to finding the chest

making my chest
i decided to make a pizza box as my chest as it fits the visual theme of my game a lot so i booted up maya and made the basic shape of the pizza box

i then went and got the UV map for the model so I could add the material for the cardboard boxing this took e very long time as I was constantly failing with the textures as they kept overlapping each over and overall being poorly compressed and not looking good

making a cutscene
I wanted to make a cutscene to guild my player to were they need to be to do this in unreal I needed to make a level scene by right clicking and creating cinematic

I then went to the top and clicked the cinematic icon to enter cinematic mode

I then moved the cameras were that player states and created a key point by clicking the plus icon on translations this makes the cameras move from each point which is the main way the camera moves after I made the cinematic I needed it top play when the played hits a certain point in the game

I wanted to make particles for my game so I first made a Niagara system by right clicking the content draw

music and sound is key to making your player feel sertern emotions a game that heavely uses sound to convay emotions is marathon a 1990 game were most of its story is told mostly through its terminals and envioments

when you read a terminal the game music changes to match the tone of the story this helps make tha player emersed i reely like this as itmake me feel very engaged in the story of marithon this is very diffrent from a fighting game whitch has very chaotic music that is very high octain that make me readey to fight
