Literally returning to Tumblr to rant about something from my childhood I just completed (as a 27 year old) lol.
Anyone remember the Unicorns of Balinor books? I’m sure I wasn’t the only 90s kid who was a horse girl that got into those books. I never finished them because first I couldn’t find books 7 and 8, then for some reason I didn’t own book 4 so when I wanted to reread them as a teen it couldn’t happen.
Until now. Last month or so, I found all 8 books on Amazon. I have a Paperwhite e-reader. This millennial bought all 8 books for the e-reader to read them start to finish to finally get closure on what happened with Ari and Chase. They’re super quick reads y’all not even 100 pages and the font is a good size, you could finish them all in a few days if you wanted to.
Anyways. I’m kind of disappointed? The books had all this talk and sort of buildup around Ari’s missing family. Her parents were kidnapped during the Great Betrayal, her brothers are just mysteriously missing, etc. I was at the 95% complete portion of the last book (which with these books it tended to go 96% then “book complete”) and you want to know what happens? Ari tells Atalanta she HAS to find her family, Atalanta’s all “we will when the time’s right!” and then... That’s it. THAT’S. IT. There’s a feel good moment about how Ari being a princess can be lonesome but at least she has good friends (even that bratty little s*** Lori?) to make it easier. “That’s all a girl could ask for” is essentially the last line.
WHAT THE BLOODY F*** MARY STANTON? I get these are kids books. I get that you could read them in any order because of how formulaic the adventures are, and the amount of recapping that goes on throughout makes it easy to fill in the blanks, but to leave that hanging is almost unforgivable. Particularly when you consider one major thing the books mention a few times but never directly in relation to the Great Betrayal and related fallout.
There’s a big time difference between Balinor and Glacier River Farm (slash our human world). In the last/8th book even it specifically says how “months have passed here, but only hours back at Glacier River Farm” (in relation to “Lori should go back before she’s missed too greatly”). Do you know how long Ari was on the other side of the Gap healing from her wounds? Book 1 mentions it was a good 1-2 months just to get back to some semblance of normalcy. Which doesn’t sound like much... until you put into context that Balinor’s time goes faster. If MONTHS in BALINOR is A FEW HOURS on the side of the gap she was healing on, how many months, if not years, have passed since the Great Betrayal? HOW MANY MONTHS OR YEARS HAVE HER PARENTS AND BROTHERS BEEN MISSING? [how long did the Shifter reign terror over the people of Balinor?]
And we’re just going to leave them missing? The realities of the wibbly wobbly timey wimey aside (if years have passed, the reunions could be interesting)... don’t these people deserve to be brought back home?
The whole Linc/Link thing was pretty cool. Seeing some of the other worlds was also cool. But it doesn’t make up for everything else. Why should we get a wrap-up for the doors she passed randomly in the Gap during book 1, an explanation for how she and Lori returned to Glacier River Farm at the end of book 3/beginning of book 4, but nothing for the main character’s family that’s mentioned in every book?
Anyways. I just had to get this out somewhere where it miiight be read by people who get it lol.
[I did enjoy the ride, recommend it if you were like me and read some of the books as a kid but never finished, I’m just disappointed with how it ended]

“Her fantasy novel Children of Blood and Bone, the first of a trilogy about a young girl’s battle with a prince over bringing magic back to West Africa,  is going to be released some time next year. But it’s already got a seven-figure publishing deal with Macmillan, and a massive deal with Fox Studios too, with the latter acquiring the movie rights pretty early on in the day for a book that hasn’t even been published yet.”

People will tell you that emotional abuse isn’t real and what you’re dealing with isn’t that big a deal and you’re just exaggerating, but let me tell you something.
If you’ve ever been wary of everyone you know, even people you trust, because you’re expecting them to get angry with you over literally anything, make fun of you, or start making threats, something’s wrong.
If you’ve ever had to plan things in anticipation of a potential tantrum that you fear will be taken out on you, something’s wrong.
If you succumb to someone’s demands because you’re never sure if their threats are empty or legit and you just want to play it on the safe side, something’s wrong.
If you find yourself jumping at smaller noises in anticipation that they’re a warning sign for a tantrum, something’s wrong.
If you hide things - especially things that make you happy - because you’re so afraid that they’ll make fun of you for liking them, scold you for liking something they don’t, take them away, destroy them, or that they’ll defile them and ruin that love you have for them, something’s wrong.
If you find yourself being silent in the face of mild disagreements or thinly-veiled insults, rather than standing up for yourself because you just don’t want to start an argument and make things worse, something’s wrong.
If that very lack of standing up for yourself eventually leads to you never offering your opinion in any sort of discussion out of fear of ridicule or being scolded because that’s what you’re so used to, something’s wrong.
If you end up spending a lot of your time in your room keeping to yourself and keeping any trip outside of your room to an absolute minimum because you don’t want to risk putting one toe out of line and setting off a tantrum, yet you’re also aware that hiding out will also cause an issue and you’re probably just minimizing the risk instead of erasing it entirely, something’s wrong.
If you ever habitually glance outside the window to keep watch for your supposed abuser’s car to return from their work, errand or trip, and then heading to your room or other hiding place to keep out of their way, erasing any obvious signs that you’ve been out and about in the rest of your living space, something’s wrong.
If one of your greatest fantasies involves not a dream career or winning the lottery but instead an escape plan succeeding, something’s wrong.
If you could basically summarize your life as living in constant, subtle fear, Something. Is. Wrong.
Emotional abuse is very, very real, and it has lasting consequences that can affect people’s relationships, their jobs, and their lives all-around.
Don’t you dare tell me it isn’t real.
