Taravali got a mouthful of toxic mushrooms this morning. I wasn’t sure how poisonous they were to dogs and she was going to run so I sent Mandana to catch her.

We have been working on recall & leave it but I’m not a professional trainer and she’s not advanced enough that I would bet her life on it. There are other ways to deal with this like getting a high value treat or toy but this required a quicker and more reliable response.

Taravali is not a gulper. She prefers to hold things in her mouth and explore them before eating so I wasn’t too concerned about her swallowing it while Mandana was chasing her. Besides that “Go Get’em” is a game Hubbins & I have played with Mandana for years. It’s a GENTLE catch & hold game. Although not the ideal situation, I wasn’t actively encouraging her to attack Taravali. I was cuing her to grab her jacket and hold her. Which she was happy to do!

Afterwards I immediately put Taravali on a leash and worked on auto leave it with the mushrooms and she took to that very well.

I asked Mandana to go to my room and get my water bottle. Something she hasn’t done in a long time and she’s never done it in this house. She had to go through several rooms and up stairs to find it. And it’s a new water bottle that she’s never retrieved for me. She was happy to do it and got it on the first try!

And for those who aren’t familiar with dog training & behavior, dogs don’t typically generalize well. They often have a hard time doing known behaviors in new situations. So all things considered this was kind of impressive.

Another note, she went to my desk first because that’s where I used to keep my water bottle in the old house but this room layout is completely different.

Also…I love her little tail wag when she finds it ☺️

Taravali’s First Swim!!!

Hubbins took off work for a couple hours (🤭) to help us teach Taravali how to swim! Because of my schedule this week, I really needed to take both dogs out for some decompression today but it was too much for me to do on my own. It’s also been too hot for walks but this new Sniffspot has been perfect for us!

I was worried about how Mandana would handle it because she gets so hyper aroused during swimming but she was actually such an angel. She didn’t mind at all when Taravali crowded her resources (treats, toys & water) and actually self regulated better than usual. She cared about Taravali and was kind of babying her around the water. She would encourage her at the stairs and if Taravali was in the water she would swim over and sniff her to make sure she was ok. It was adorable.

Taravali struggled with the stairs which I expected since she struggled with our stairs at home too. Despite her apprehension she really showed a lot of interest in the water. Of course she needs a lot more practice. She made that life jacket work hard (tbf she probably needs to go up to a medium)! She only started figuring it out when I was holding her booty up under the water for her. I’ve heard her dad has the same issue and often prefers to stand in the water on his hind feet like a person lol

The important thing is that it’s clear she really WANTS to be in the water so you can expect to see us practicing a lot more in the near future!

The smell of alcohol swabs makes me so incredibly nauseous it’s been affecting my ability to do my weekly self injections but I found these scented nose rings and they have been a game changer! The orange is my favorite. It smells just like a glass of orange juice and masks the rubbing alcohol without smelling like perfume, candles or cleaning supplies. They are super soft and pliable plus you can wash & reuse them!
