Now the river can not naturally flow. the death of the river meaning the booming of industrial life in with in the growing city. Within the city, factories are booming with work and life. The river is subjected to harmful chemicals and human waste from the whole city Nearly 700 brick fields, docks, and oils from boats and steamers pollute the river.

Staley- on a wet bough-Keliy Anderson
Tumblr media
Keliy Anderson-Staley is a monographer. She was born and raised in Guilford, Maine. In her formative years, she lived with her family in an off the gird cabin. Later in her life, she lived in New York for a decade and now currently resides in Arkansas. She received her BA in photography at Hampshire College. She later obtained her MFA at Hunter College in New York City.
Anderson-Staley has exhibited her work for over a decade. Taking on solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery; Smithsonian Institution, the Moscow Museum of National Art, Russia, and the Southeast Museum of Photography. She has collections in both the Portland Museum of Art and the Marine Library of Congress. Along with the Ceder Museum of Art in Iowa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wet-plate Collodion-
This particular style of portrait making is an over hundred-year-old method. Originating in the 1850s and 1860s, this style of photography is making a comeback in the last decade. Kelly Anderson is one of these artists bringing back the method and showcasing it in her own work. this method consists of a long exposure time needed in order to create a tintype that the sitter can remain still so a sharp image can be produced.
this method causes the subjects to remain in a transfixed neutral expression, reminiscent of those of the 19th century. This takes away the modern style of smiling for a photograph as the images need more time to capture the fine details of the subject's face.
Anderson-Staley creates her method of wet-bough by mixing and pouring the emulsion for each plate on the shooting site a little before the portrait is created. This method of hand-coating each piece leaves behind embedded traces of the maker in the final image.
Anderson-Standley states that her upbringing deeply influenced a lot of her early photography. One example was her first book, "Off the Grid" based on her childhood home. This book focuses on families who live without the modern-day amenities in Maine. This interest in people is what drove her to work in portraiture.
Tumblr media
as stated by Anderson-Staley when asked about the evolution of her work
"I used to focus more on narrative-based photographic projects, but my work is now more conceptual. I like both modes, and I think photography is well-suited to both, but I like projects that make photography the subject of inquiry as much as the vehicle of it."- Keliey Anderson-Staley
Anderson's work is well executed and stunning to look at, as she has not only mastered the art of portrait photography but also a hundred-year-old method of taking said portraits.

Art Hop- March 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In March of 2024, I ventured into one of the first art hops for the spring 2024 semester. it was one of my first times going into Galleries seeing all the unique pieces and speaking with various artists.
There were a variety of artists and different media types. Such as collage, photography, painting, and illustration along with others. here are some photographs taken.
Tumblr media
This sculpture was located in the room of a collage artist, from what i was able to see, the artist had various subjects for his pieces. Some pieces consisted of people while others incorporated animals such as birds. However, what struck me as odd was this seemingly out-of-place sphere sculpture that I can assume was created by the artist himself.
Tumblr media
I was able to speak with the artist who created this blue and red-hued piece. He explained that his occupation before being a full-time artist was an architect. With that knowledge, he used tools traditionally used in the construction of the building and applied them to paintings. His work mainly consists of broad strokes of blotted enamel paints on canvas. He works in various colors not only in cool hues. Much of his work was full of color and deliberately placed strokes of paint.
this was my first time going into art hop and it was a good experience to see artists and their studios. I would like to visit more in the future if given the chance

Nicaragua- Susan Meiselas (1981)
Tumblr media
Susan Meiselas is an American-based Documentary Photographer. She is currently positioned in New York. She has been associated with Magnum since 1976 and a full member since the 1980s. Meiselas is known for her human rights-based work in Latin America and on the American carnival strippers.
Well known for her book, "Nicaragua" Illustrating the civil war-torn country during the 1970s. Within this Book, it shows the true brutality that humanity is capable of, especially on those who are of their own.
During the years 1978 - 1979, Meiseals ventured into Nicaragua, right as the civil war was at an all-time high. This brutality was often caused by military and government officials mercilessly killing their own civilians in a dictatorship. the first part of her book, it is shown the state of the Nicaraguan people as they gather a resistance against the military. showing no matter whether young or old, no one is immune from the Somoza regime or its propaganda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The civil in Nicaragua started as the people were frustrated with the constant military abuse and murder. along with the drastic differences in classes. leading to the poor remaining poor and the rich becoming only richer.
The Resistance mainly consisted of young men. Usually in their teens. They were at the forefront of fighting against military officials. Many would be killed in their efforts to liberate their people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here they are wearing traditional Indian dance makes, Adopted by the people as a symbol of resistance and as a way to keep their identities hidden.
it was not only young men who were killed in the crossfire. many military personnel were also killed. One photograph to take note of that I can not show here shows a killed military soldier, lying in a pile of burning rubble. his body burned black. Laying on top of him is a painting of the current president, Anastasio Somoza Debayle, burning along with him. One group of Rebels was known as the 'Sandinistas', They were constantly on the front of the crossfire. Women would also join this group in efforts to turn the ties.
Tumblr media
It was towards the end of the 70s decade when the war was turning in favor of the rebels. they ventured to the capital of Managua, Nicaragua.
Tumblr media
Capturing the capital signaled the end of a decade's long war. Taking the Managua capital , it was renamed to the ' Plaza de la revolucion'
Tumblr media
The end of a brutal war, and the beginning of a Triumph revolution.

The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams (1999)- Alessandra Saguinetti-
Alessandra Saguinetti
Tumblr media
Alessandra Saguinetti is an Argentinian-born, photo-based artist. Saguinetti takes major inspiration from her roots as subjects of her works. One example is "On the Sixth Day" (2005). Saguinetti photographs her aunt's farm and farm animals in Buenos Aries Argentina. Illustrating the complex relationship between the domesticated animal and the domesticator, man. In her Second book, "The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams" (1999), Saguinetti follows two young cousins, Guille and Belinda, throughout their formative years as pre-teens to adolescents in rural Buenos Aries. Unraveling as they play, dream, and walk together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cousins presented above were around the ages of 9 and 10. As Saguinetti photographed them, she illustrated both the similarities and differences the girls had. however, it was those differences that further brought the two cousins together
The idea to photograph the two cousins originated from one day in which Sanguinetti instead of shooing away the girls from the animals she was photographing like many times before, Sanguinetti instead turned the lens towards the young girls.
Guille and Belinda were seen as bound at the hip to one another as those around the pair would say. One would never be seen without the other, and as they grew and played with one another, Saguinetti was there to photograph their bond.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike her acclaimed monograph " On the Sixth Day" which gave a metaphorical analysis of the relationship between man and animal. while in this book it was a much more for-front documentary of the girls. as stated by Saguinetti
"Sanguinetti took pictures to 'crystallize their rich yet fragile and unattended world' "- Sanguinetti
In the end, Alessandra Saguinetti wanted to not only show the passage of time and childhood as the young girls grew up but she wanted to illuminate upon the wonderlike view of the world that only a child could see.

On The Sixth Day - Alessandra Saguinetti
Alessandra Saguinetti is a Photo-Based Artist born and raised in Argentina. Saguinetti draws inspiration from various parts of the culture and home she grew up in. From what can be seen from her work Saguinetti holds her origins dear to her as it is the subject of two well-known photo Series. These are On the Sixth Day (2005) The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and The Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams (1999).
On the Sixth Day-
On the Sixth Day is a photo series based in Buenos Aries Argentina, on Saguinetti's family farm. Within this book, the story of the complex relationship between domesticated animals and humans is shown as they are both cared for and raised to later in their life being killed for resources for the very being who raised them.
Here are some examples of such-
Here the animals are shown as they live on the farm with the aid of humans as it was mankind who made animals dependent on them to simply live.
They wait on people as they feed, water, herd, and care for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As this chapter of the book is about to come to a close, the theme of the next two-thirds of the book begins to become apparent. By the following images.
Tumblr media
As the book continued onwards - we saw the other side of what Sanguinetti was portraying in her book.
the duality of the relationship man and domesticated animals have. Domesticated animals are raised and cared for by humans so when the time comes, they are killed and prepared for food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the Sixth Day, Sanguinetti leads the audience towards the reality of mortality . Sanguinetti states in an interview with Magnum
“I began to see how she embodied the dualism in our relationship with animals. Little by little, the essential contradiction of caring for animals that you would later kill began to disappear. On occasion, she felt guilty if an animal was killed and she didn’t take a photograph. “Taking a photograph has always been about paying attention, and that inherently involves some kind of respect because you are taking the time to understand it. I can’t photograph something I really don’t love or am not curious about or don’t respect in some way.” (Bengal.)
In her work, Sanguinetti wanted to show the mortality of animals as they are used as a resource by others. In a sense, she wanted to show that animals too are capable of recognizing their own mortality as human beings do. The title of Saguinetti's book can also have some deeper reference to that fragile bond between man and animal. On the Sixth day can be seen as a reference to the bible. As God made all animals on the Sixth Day. Man is who created the domesticated animal.

Theme Project Proposal
Here is my proposal for my photography theme project
For my theme project, I wanted to tackle fieldwork and its workers. Fieldwork and Agriculture are a huge part of not only California and the Central Valley as a whole but it affects the entirety of the United States. I wanted to shed light on the work that goes on to produce the immense amounts of food that gets exported daily.
I want to photograph this subject because it is an aspect that I have grown up with. My father is a field worker, along with my mother before giving birth to me and my siblings. It is honest, hard work for poor pay. However, a lot of people do it to feed their families.  Fieldwork allowed my parents to put me and my siblings through college and allowed me to study a career I am passionate about, Animation.
To photograph my subjects, I will go out into the fields while they are working, I got prior permission to do so. I want to not only capture the workers as they work but also the blooming trees as spring is about to commence, meaning more work after a dull and slow winter.
I want others to get a glimpse into the workflow of fieldwork, it is not a leisure work style, it is often a fast-paced and grueling workload especially when it is the warmer seasons such as spring and summer when the fruit is in abundance.
