week twelve: deadline
Deadline week. not much to post about this however i’ll post an excerpt of my essay
Historically, the illustrations used within the Grimm fairy tales play an interesting role within the society of the time. It was believed that the brothers took folktales that were most commonly told by the lower class and compiled them into a book called “kinder und Hausmärchen”, however they primarily gathered their tales from the middle class range as well and expanded each tale with improvements to the characters and their meaning (Zipes 1983). This allowed them to connect the oral tales of the lower class, and the folktales of the middle class into one place that would satisfy a general audience. The books were heavily criticised by the church for not being christian enough at the time so the brothers began editing them to input more religious themes. For example in the the third brother added christian symbols within the illustrations and wilhelm added a lot of the religion's proverbs to appeal more to the church.

week ten
Week ten i dont think i did much to contribute to my essay, still was struggling in finding the motivation to write, at this point i hads maybe 200-500 words just on the historical and social aspects of the grimm brothers. Below are some of the bullet points i made earlier in the month, organised in which section they would go into
Historical
Historical: collection of fairy tales marketed towards ‘lower’ class audience
They were rejected by the church for not being christian enough, so the third brother added christian symbols within the illustrations and wilhelm added a lot of christian proverbs within the stories to appeal more to the audience.
Social
Despite being titled ‘kinder und hausmärchen’ it wasn't a child friendly book.
However focus shifted to children and the sex was toned down, yet the violence was increased to scare children into obedience
strongly against step-mothers
Zipes suggests the sociological reason for the animosity between step-mother and step-daughter in the stories is because of during that time a lot of women died from childbirth and there were many instances of the father remarrying a younger woman that is usually around similar to the eldest daughter
Political
Some the stories have anti-semitism
They believed a lot of these stories revealed the national german identity
Made during the napoleonic wars whilst the french were occupying germany so a lot of symbolisms that were seen as french were removed (the three fairies in ‘Sleeping Beauty’ changed to three wise women)
Technological
Lithography

critical analysis
Historically, the illustrations used within the Grimm fairy tales play an interesting role within the society of the time. The brothers took folktales that were most commonly told by the lower class and compiled them into a book called “kinder und Hausmärchen” which gave stories for entertainment to the lives of children living in the 19th century. However these stories were often heavily criticised as they were far too dark to be considered ‘child friendly’ so as they reprinted editions, the stories were edited. The illustrations within the book followed the same pattern, becoming less of a dark twisted fairy tale picture and more of a whimsical setting. Over time other interpretations of the stories were made, such as Disney, that sugar coated all of the violence that were originally told in the Grimm books.
Iit is believed that there also political aspects held within the Grimm fairy tales. The brothers had a second thought in mind where the main purpose of those stories were to be compiled together to give off a sense of German nationality and pride.
During when the first editions were printed, the common form of printing illustrations into books were by using metal plates that were engraved onto. Each book had to be individually printed using the plates. The second edition was the first to be illustrated
